MOMBASA's Number 1 Restaurant / Is Tamarind Worth The Price?

- With a strong 4.6 out of 5 and over 1000 reviews on Google this makes Tamarind the best restaurant in Mombasa according to the Internet!
So for our first trip in Mombasa, we had to try the best restaurant in town even though the reviews we're kind of warning everyone about their steep prices. And let's say that the review were not wrong about that. It is fairly expensive!
Upon arriving to the Tamarind restaurant, we were right away very impressed by the location. Beautiful open restaurant with a bar area and everything was overlook the water offering a stunning view especially during sunset. The live music was also a nice touch that really added to the ambiance.
After sitting at our table, we starting by enjoying some well prepared appetizer including tuna tataki which was some of the best we had ever had. And camembert samosa which were also amazing. Fried cheese... It just HAS to be good right!
All the seafood we had for our mains was also fresh and perfectly cooked. We would even say that it was some of the best seafood we had ever ate. From the shrimps to the crab cakes and of course the lobster it was all buttery and tasty. The only menu item that was good but they not surpassed our expectation was the chocolate desert but we are giving them a pass on that since it was not bad by any means.
Overall, an amazing culinary experience which we can recommend to any seafood lover who finds themselves in Mombasa. But keep in mind that this is more of a "special occasion" restaurant due to it's high price point.

You know the food was good when Dave skipped a bathroom tour.
I highly recommend doing the dhow, the ocean sunset is magical and dinner by the mangroves...next level... worth doing at least once in a lifetime

For a different experience in Mombasa area try Moorings, a floating restaurant on the edge of Mtwapa (you can see it from the bridge into Mtwapa, crossing from Mombasa county into Kilifi county).
It s a great location, they have good food at reasonable prices. Not like your fancy Nairobi spits 🥴 but it is among some of the good places we have here in coast (and we don't have that many) 😉

Decades later tamarind is still doing good. Awesome. Miss their crab spring rolls and lobster.

If want Japanese food check out Misono. It’s a family friend’s restaurant (Mombasa and Nairobi). Owner used to work at Safari Park hotel and decided to go solo. Excellent sushi and tepanyaki! Great videos. Keep it up!

Tamarind owns the carnival restaurant in Nairobi and the Tamarind on Ngong road Karen definitely their restaurant are not cheap.
They also own Savora hotels.

Very expensive indeed. Especially when you know that the lobster comes from less than one km away. You truly pay for the location.

I would say it's too expensive for nothing. It's nice but definately not worth the bill.
When you eat there, you're really paying for the location.
