    The one thing that you said--to not get stuck in the past--is so important! Everything changes as we age--our body shape, our skin tone, our hair color & texture....instead of fighting the changes, we need to embrace & celebrate our age & all the wisdom that comes with it.

    • @nataliamiles7109
      @nataliamiles7109 Před 2 lety +21

      Yes, wearing a Farrah Fawcett hair style, 1980s make-up, and clothes from decades ago are not helpful to maintaining a modern, stylish, and flattering appearance. It is especially vital to maintain a modern appearance for job interviews, as ageism is rampant in the U.S. and I am sure elsewhere.

      @polishtheday Před 2 lety +13

      I agree about hair colour and texture changing but am puzzled by the common assumption that our shape changes as we age. Mine hasn’t much. I’m still as pale and as thin as I was at twenty (though nothing has prevented my skin from sagging in a few spots and I’m an inch wider at the waist). But I’m more accepting of that now and less self-conscious about my body than I was when young and it was fashionable to be curvy. There’s a wider variety of styles available, less formality about what we wear and an acceptance of different body types that makes it easier to get dressed in the morning and feel good about how you look.

      You're lucky that you're still thin. Many women gain weight, due to hormonal changes, after menopause, especially in the tummy area. For more information, read a 2015 study, "Risk Profiles for Weight Gain Among Post Menopausal Women" in the National Library of Medicine publication, which is available for free online.

      @polishtheday Před 2 lety +9

      @@nataliamiles7109 Thanks. That looks like an interesting study. Most of the ones I’ve browsed start with the assumption that weight gain is inevitable. I’ve wondered why this happens because I do get asked what I do to stay slim and “nothing” isn’t the best answer. It’s probably a combination of things. Now I just need to find that study explaining why I’m still stuck with acne breakouts when that doctor I saw in my twenties said “don’t worry. It will go away when you get older.” :-)

      @nataliamiles7109 Před 2 lety +7

      @@polishtheday Hi Brenda, I am sure that your answer of "Nothing" is very humble. You probably watch what you eat and exercise. Acne: I know what you mean. I still have to unclog my nose pores every night, and I get the occasional pimple at age 64. Ha! What works is prescription Retin-A! Have you tried it? It exfoliates the skin, so be prepared for flaking, but that means the product is doing its job. Acne is a result of oil and skin cells in the pores mixing together; the pore cannot get rid of the oil and skin cells fast enough, so pimples result. The Retin-A helps by exfoliating INSIDE of the pores, so that the oil can slog its way through and not mix with skin cells to create the blackheads. Plus, Retin-A builds collagen which greatly decreases wrinkling, especially crow's feet! I have been using it since I was 16, and I hardly have any wrinkles. You can also use it on your neck. Hope this helps. Retin-A is considered by dermatologists to be the gold standard in exceptional skin care. My dermatologists are Dr. Seth Matarasso of San Francisco and Dr. Richard Glogau of San Francisco; both are professors of dermatology at UCSF Medical School.

    Avoiding sun exposure is not good for your health. A vitamin D deficiency might accelerate the over-all aging process. I would prefer to stay moderately in the sun without sunscreen then having dementia, cancer, bones problems. Also the sun is good for depression too. I would rather accept a little bit of rough and wrinkled skin then having memory loss or serious health issues.

    Oh Marie-Anne, I’m so glad you mentioned wearing black. Although I love the great black basics, I find so many woman I know style themselves in black from head to toe thinking it helps them appear thinner. Most of them are more focused on the color black than how they are actually styling their outfit. If styled terribly no amount of black will make the body look thinner. LOL. I also find all black just makes woman look so much more pale, whereas a nice color will actually add color and glow to the face. And lastly, at our age of 50 and above, wearing head to toe black just makes you look like your in a perpetual schedule to the funeral home. Color is fun and should be enjoyed. LOL.

I have to buy all new clothes and plan on buying plenty of belts and other accessories. I have also started working out to get rid of flabby arms so I can wear sleeveless dresses in the hot summer. I agree with all of these, in particular the foundation garments. I have had a large bust since my teens, and a bad back since my twenties, and a well-fitting bra makes all the difference in the world. A similar thing that helps me is to wear modern corsetry, like slimming garments but going up a size, so everything is held where it should be, but I am still able to breathe and move comfortably. Good posture is also really important - nothing makes one look and feel like a “little old lady” more than being stooped. I sound like my Granny, but “Stand up straight, girl!”

I remember how my grandmother used to love wearing pinks, especially magenta, because she thought they brightened her face. She was right .. l now wear more vibrant colors and it does help to perk up my face.

    Another thing is to add a belt to those less-structured dresses. I’ll wear those dresses for comfort and coolness when alone at home, but always add a belt to go out. They both give shape and shorten the dress a little. My style is classic, but I love adding carefully selected trends. Yesterday, I talked my 82-year old Mom into buying her new white sneakers in the slight flatform style, with a 2-inch, rather than a 1-inch sole, she looks so chic in them and they’re even more comfy for her bad back. I think they take a decade off her look.

    SO true about black! Most women I know think it's the go-to color. And if it's worn on the bottom of your body like a pair of black jeans or a black skirt, no problem. But as you age, black near your face draws attention to the circles or bags under your eyes, the hollows in your cheeks, and the flaws on your face like sun damage. It makes you look haggard. I now love lots of color near my face like pink or red. Or even just white that reflects light. But black? Not so much. This video is great - tons of great and true tips!

    aaaaah so many GEMS in this one video! LOVED the idea to 'revise what you wear regularly... your style IS a journey;' wise words. A great tip not to have a 'classic' bag with a 'classic' outfit! It makes A LOT of sense. I also have to really think on challenging myself to be less matchy matchy (ie. I so love to match my shoes -color scheme- with my bags). I think it makes sense, to match can be too 'put together' and looks like you are not as casual but over thinking... and maybe the 'air of confidence' isn't there as with someone who just doesn't need to have it all 'come together.' I like the push out of that cube. Thank you- as ever MA

    Something that I have had some challenge with is bright colours. I am extremely fair skinned. As a girl and young adult I was quite freckled, but as I have started to age (I will be 61 years old next month), I have developed a few age spots and I think my skin tone has even changed a little bit. Very bright (such as jewel tones which seem so popular in clothing) colours are overpowering on me, whilst pastels are not quite right, either. Finding the “clear spring” colours in blouses or dresses is difficult.

    Bonjour Marie-Anne,
    So many great tidbits in this video. About 10 years ago I did a lot of reading about bras and how to choose a size. The department store fitter I went to was not very helpful as most stores didn't stock small band / large cup sizes. When I finally took the plunge and mail ordered a bra that I thought would fit, the difference was remarkable. I did look more youthful and my clothes fit better. Since then, there is a local shop where I can find bras without ordering them and I am thrilled.

    I definitely related to the bra mistake. BUT, have now been properly fitted and feel so much better and stylish. BTW, could you address looks for those of us who struggle with tummy's and a bit more curvy figures. The challenge to look chic and youthful is more challenging. So many cute little accent pieces don't look right at all.

    I think w classics one of the keys is definitely to mix them with younger items. When I was home after several months of beach living I couldn’t wait to have an excuse to wear good things again and went to an appt in a classic silk dress, black Chanel jacket, low-heeled fringed marmont pumps and a traditional bag. Stopping into a coffee shop on the way home I suddenly felt absolutely ancient!!! I think in the future these pieces will look individually so much better w jeans, sneakers, leather moto jacket or something else more modern or w an edge.

      For me I like to think of it as looking healthy, current and stylish and not about avoiding looking older. Disappointed Marie-Anne picked on the midi/ floral,/floaty/boho dresses and skirts. I think mature women can really rock this look and with care can look fabulous and feminine. Hemlines in my opinion are an individual thing and I personally love the midi length and feel it suits me best. I am also 5' 1 It lengthens my body whereas a shorter length can have the effect of cutting me in half. It is about balance and proportion. I feel the 'just below the knee' on me looks frumpy too. We are all different and it is great to have some diversity in style. Otherwise we would all look boringly the same. Birkenstocks are a no for me simply because I think they are ugly and heavy looking. Much prefer a lightweight white trainer with my dresses for casual wear 😃
