How to Install a Webasto Gas Heater -Our Promaster Adventure

- This video is our "How to Install a Webasto" adventure it was a really fun install. Especially because it didn't come with directions. I love figuring stuff like this out This placement was the best way for us to do it. If your placement is going to be different the same essential process is the same.
If you are thinking about installing your own Webasto gasoline heater or any gas/diesel heater my best advice for you is to make sure you feel confident in your abilities to install one (i.e. mechanical, construction, electrical experience, working with fuel lines, etc.). Installing one yourself may void the warranty, so, if you're feeling good about it and you're willing to take the risk, go for it. I've helped other people install the Chinese diesel heaters and the install in this video can be applied to them, too. They are all generally the same.
The greatest thing about installing the Webasto gasoline heater in a Promaster is the port on the fuel pump made specifically to tap the gas in the tank. There is no need to drop your fuel tank, drill extra holes, and install the tap that comes with the Webasto kit. It's all right there ready to go. Thanks to my friend Dave from @oneadvantureatatime I found out there is even an attachment that goes on the port to convert it into directly into a 1/4 inch hose fitting (See link below for more details).

I’ve installed MANY of these. Top of the line if you ask me, the engine preheater is also a very useful addition in those colder climates.

I’ve decided a change in my thinking and will find an alternative to this type of heating for my van.

Just got my Webasto Gas heater and it came with a thumb drive with instructions on it but to tell you the truth they are not much help. Thanks for the video it's a great help!

Great install video ! I did get a little chuckle out of the '11mm Crescent wench' comment at 11:00 minutes into the video, but we all make verbal gaffes while speaking from time to time ;) Kudos on the video !!
Hahaha! When I dive into something and really get into a zone, every wrench becomes a crescent wrench all of a sudden for whatever reason. Glad you enjoyed the video!

We use them at work in Alaska. They work well and they have both diesel and gas models.

Yes! The hardest part of the install is getting through the anticipation of doing it. The install itself is a lot easier than you think. You’ll be surprised. Let us know how it works out for you guys.

There is one more thing I forgot to mention! I wish the Americans manufacturer make any potential items that the consumers will buy, but in a less expensive way. That same Diesel heater is found in Amazon, made in China for $149. And is as reliable as the one you installed. Is all good by all means, but the Americans industry should try to make good quality items for a good affordable price, especially because is made in the US. China is always coming up with great technology and sold in the US. When is the US going to learn?
Yea, I totally get it! Hahaha! I’m pretty sure Webasto is a UK thing though. I did hear the Chinese diesel heaters are great. I just didn’t want to deal with having to Mount and fill a fuel tank for it. I helped a buddy of mine install his and he LOVES it! If you go that route the install is the same except for mounting the tank it comes with which isn’t a total pain in the ass.

Na, it didn’t come with anything instructional. That’s what made the install so fun!!! Hahaha!
I heard that the company doesn't recommend installation underneath the passenger seat as its to close to the fuel tank. Have you heard that?
I haven’t heard anything about it. If it’s about the heat from the exhaust pipe on the webasto I wouldn’t worry about it. The vehicle muffler runs right under the passenger seat also.
Thanks for the super video, it gave me the confidence to install my own. Have you adjusted yours for altitude yet? If so, how? Apparently, you can't make the adjustment easily without the manual rheostat. Anyway, you're awesome. Happy travels.
Thank you! I’m so glad it was helpful. I haven’t adjusted ours to the high altitude yet. I’m going to look into doing it within the next couple of weeks or so and see what’s involved with it. I’ll let you know how it works out!
When you did the fuel pump wiring how do you know which wires to insert into which sides of the plug ( 1 and 2 from the heater are both black and the fuel pump wires are blue and brown... ) .. Thanks!
I remember the wiring wasn’t specified so I just took it as you can hook it up either way. I am pretty sure the motor itself can only run in one direction so it doesn’t matter which wire you hook up together as long as there is electricity hitting it when it is supposed to.

If you are feeling in any way uncomfortable about installing something like this I would too. Unfortunately we do not know any places that do it professionally. We never explored that route. Fantastic job! I'm giving this project a go on our promaster next week. Did you have to remove (then reinstall) the heat shield to run the fuel line over the exhaust and such?
Yea, I did! It wasn’t that bad to take off either. It’s a bit of a pain in the ass lining it back up. Just a bit of extra finesse on it. Good luck with the install! If you got anymore questions don’t hesitate to get in touch again.

@@NomadderWhereVan I've gone to the heatso website and am curious what options I need to add for a successful install. Anything else besides the rheostat? How do I add the high altitude option you and Dave mentioned in his install?
Hey! The options I went with was the seven day timer and the Webasto muffler. I didn’t go with any of the mounting brackets because you have to drill a massive hole in the floor of the van to make them work. I didn’t go with the rheostat, but, I heard those controls are really nice. The high altitude addition is something of a mystery to me still. I haven’t installed one or even looked into it much yet. I definitely need to. Dave may have dug up a bit of something something about it. If I find out where to get it and how to install it I’ll let you know. That should get you fired up though. Let us know how the install works out. If you got any more questions let us know.

Im having the same issue when initial start up, there’s isnt power being supplied from my battery pack(Jackery 1500)
This was an “aha” moment for me, except that jackery does not have a 12v Regulated cable. I thought about purchasing to use it on my jackery but I don’t have an Andersen output plug on my pack.. any reccomendation?
The only thing I could suggest, because I don’t know too much about Jackery, would be to hook it up to your starter battery with the double pole double throw switch and voltage indicator. Then that way you could use the starter battery and still have the other poles to hook up to the Jackery if you end up finding an alternative to the regulated cable. If you end up hooking up to the starter battery though make sure you get that voltage indicator so you don’t drain the starter battery. Honestly we ended up using the starter battery more than the goal zero due to power conservation.
I'm hoping to do the exact same install on my promaster but wondering where you got the anderson port? I also have a goal zero and bought the 12v regulated cable but am having trouble figuring out how to add an anderson port to the webasto wires. Any tips?
Yea! You can get Anderson to bare wire cable. Check this out: amzn.to/3rKtnKI . Something like that would work perfect. Then just cut and splice to length and you’ll be good to go.

I actually prefer the barbed 90. Maybe because I’m more familiar with working with those and they’ve never done me wrong. Honestly though I like whatever is in stock or on the shelf that’ll work. 😉

Hows your Webasto working after 3 years?
Any problems at elevations above 6K feet? Curous about long trerm performance.
Hey there, sorry we’re just getting back to ya.
Our Webasto is still running strong.
No issues running above 6k.
We’ve always run our heater on the highest setting. I think that’s the way to go to avoid carbon buildup.
We did just recently over the summer, remove & clean the Webasto just to maintain & for curiosity sake.
We hardly had any buildup.

If connecting the webasto to the vans battery. Will it drain the cars battery if the heater is on while the van is off?
Yea, it definitely will. If you’re going to hook up to car battery I would definitely recommend putting the capacity reader on it so you’re not going below 50% and deteriorating the life of the battery. Here’s the thing with hooking up to the vans battery though: if you’re down that far all you have to do is idle it for like a half hour and it’ll be fully charged. We ran ours for the first few months off the car battery and it worked out great.

Good question! The wattage it takes is right around 90 to 95 during the startup phase which lasts about 30 seconds and then runs right around 15 watts while running. So battery drainage will depend on your battery bank size and how long you plan on running it for. We’ve been running ours anywhere between 2 and 4 hours a night lately and we’ve had no issues with killing our battery. Hope that helps.

We’ve definitely done that! Not sure if it’s super legal, seeing we don’t have seatbelts back there.
I personally don’t like laying in bed while Billy drives. I tend to get a little motion sick.

I have an idea for a video. I have not seen anyone do it. Take the Top 5 power items that you and most people have and show us how much power does it take from the battery (s). Show us your battery power gauge before and after. Maybe 2 hours? IDK. I think the 1st item could be LED lighting? (all lights on) FAN etc. I personally would like to see a laptop get charged...(probably won't be 2 hours) Maybe some of these things won't move the gauge at all in 2 hours. Maybe record one thing each day. Well that's my idea. I don't frickin know. I'm tryin here. Now get outta here ya bastids from Barstin.

You could have just dropped it in with all that stuff already attached and minimized all the work you have to do upside down.
That would’ve required much bigger holes in the floor to clear the hose clamps though. I was aiming to keep the holes as tight as possible.
