    Our Rich Journey - How to Live Off Investments & Retire Early | Our Seven Account Strategy for Financial Independence: If you've seen our videos, you know that we are on the journey to F.I.R.E (financial independence retire early) - and any good F.I.R.E. plan involves a strategic draw-down strategy (i.e., a plan for withdrawing funds from different accounts throughout retirement). In this video, we discuss that plan! We discuss the seven investment funds we contribute to for FIRE and we discuss our plan for taking money from those funds in order to fund our early (and continuing) retirement. (Hint - it involves the 4% rule! :)

    Congratulations on reaching FIRE! I thought I heard you say once you were 59, you were thinking of drawing your Roth and HSA accounts first before your 401k assets. For tax reasons, that seems to be backwards. I would recommend drawing down the 401ks first and at the same time also convert as much as possible to Roth so they will be tax free forever.. Goal would be to have as low of a 401k balance as possible at 70 when RMDs hit. You could end up in a very high tax bracket if you wait for RMDs to hit-especially if you end up with pension and social security (It will be there) on top at 65-70. Those RMDs can send your taxes soaring and no way to stop it then. Taxes. Plenty of time for you to go but watch out! I’d draw down / convert 401k to Roth IRAs as soon as you hit 59 1/2!!

    I love your transparency and clarity about stock market. As a foreigner where stock market doesn't exist, it's hard to understand (in a nutshell) what and how to invest in order to set up a retirement fund, and most important how to withdrawal without depleting it. 😘
    I've been paying a financial officer to invest for me because I didn't understand even after or meeting. The financial lingo he used plus all the paperwork is overwhelming for a non- native English speaker without family or friends to ask for help.

I do have question: How were you able to get enough money into your Vanguard brokerage investment account so as to live off of 4% per year until you get to “retirement age”? I mean were you investing/compounding in it for years already? Did you earn enough to put a large sum into it? Perhaps you have another video that covers this question.. would love to know. Precise and concise, I like how you go a straight to the point. been putting aside 50% of my pay into growing my investments and portfolio using professional service and I have a rather large portfolio and can decide to retire. I'm thinking of starting a youtube channel also ....

    Love this video. It is great to see a plan/approach for tapping various accounts. One challenge that we have is that we have dumped so much in pretax accounts with little in post tax accounts. May have to employ a Roth conversion ladder, a-la the Mad Fientist, to try to get some balance.

    Great videos and comments, so happy you guys are doing this! Would you give an example of how you would rebalance your portfolio just before a recession? 70/20/10 is great but what would that look like just before?

    • @OurRichJourney
      @OurRichJourney  Před 5 lety +6

      Hi Peter! I think you may be asking a question more in terms of reallocation. A rebalance would just keep our portfolio at our previously established ratios. However, in a recession, one might want to consider reallocating his/her investment portfolio. In other words, in a recession, an investor might want to reallocate his/her portfolio to put more money (or a greater percentage of money) in stocks and less in bonds (or vise versa). It really depends on the investor's risk tolerance, how close that person is to retirement, whether the investor is investing long-term, and how long the investor intends to continue funding his/her portfolio. Each person's situation is unique. For us, we are all about throwing more money into stocks during a recession - it's like buying stocks at a discount! :)

    For me, I am 60, I have all my retirement money in these funds:
    FBGRX 25%
    TRBCX 25%
    VTSAX 25 %
    VTI 25%

      Can someone explain what the difference is between VTSAX & VTI ... I looked on Vanguard and they hold the same things. Aren’t they both considered passive management funds that follow the index? One costs more I think? I’m not sure why!
      I have Vanguard 2045 Target date IRA but I’m thinking that’s taking more money in fees vs if I just buy the ETFS within the IRA. Am I right?

    Smart strategy but if I were you I will wait on taking from the ROTH 1st because of RMD on your 401k which increases because of percentage required to distribute in retirement which may also affect your taxes you pay as well in the later part. You need to check out RMD Percentage table for your calculations. My option will be the 401k 1st so that you draw that down and later tap into the ROTH option. My 2cents. Great job guys.
