What’s the movie Deep Impact about?
What would you do if you knew that in a handful of days, an enormous comet would collide with Earth and all humanity could be annihilated? The countdown to doomsday is underway in this "gut-wrenching, eye-opening blast of a movie experience" (Jeff Craig, Sixty Second Preview). Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker) directs, guiding an all-star cast featuring Robert Duvall, Tea Leoni, Elijah Wood, Vanessa Redgrave, Maximilian Schell and Morgan Freeman. With the film's dynamic fusion of large-scale excitement and touching, human-scale storylines, Deep Impact makes its impact felt in a big and unforgettable way.

The guy reading the newspaper is like: “wait what? ‘Comet to Strike Tomorrow!’ But? That’s today!”
Lol, that guy is my favorite character in this movie xD
I bet there's a lot of people who would actually do that. "I'm just gonna live life the way I always do... Suit on, reading the paper in the park." Then they actually see the tsunami coming and they're like "Oh shit!"
Well, I think that guy reading the newspaper is Jenny's boss at MSNBC: Bruce Weitz as Stuart Caley.
He’s not going to be panicked by some MSM liberal commie BS about the end of the world
"And for a special side news: a comet is going to strike Earth this evening. More on that tomorrow."
The Statue of Liberty always gets it in these apocalyptic movies
Yea..remember planet of the apes and Cloverfield?
Usually it’s the Golden Gate Bridge 🌉
It's alright, Ghostbusters 2 made up for it and showed her some love.
New York always seems to get it. So eerie seeing the Twin Towers go down.
@@nassauguy48 Exactly I can't imagine standing in the streets of Manhattan looking up and seeing a huge wall of water engulf the towers while people scream and run in panic all around you
Her on the beach with her father stuck with me for years!! such a touching moment. It is truly felt.
Me too actually. What a scene
@@sybylo it really is lol
I agree. It's actually the moment I remember from the film the most and I haven't seen the film in its entirety for years. It's very moving how her father holds her protectingly as she buries her face into his jacket and he stands tall and stoic. Like he can't stop the inevitable but is still being a strong father to his child in the face of what is about to happen. It's so moving.
She's suddenly a little girl again, in her Daddy's arms.
Wish they escaped in time
There is something about the way that Tea Leoni says "Daddy" just before that insane wave hit that just messes me up everytime I hear it... it's kind of like the way that sometimes people who are at death's door call out for their mothers when things are well past the point of a parent being able to do anything about it.
I agree completely and so wonderfully said by yourself. It's like she is a child again seeking comfort in her father's protection in their last moments. And he like a father stands tall, stoic and protecting her even though he knows he can't stop it. It's beautiful, moving and tragic at the same time.
Wish they d get away in time

I lost count how many times New York has been destroyed in movies, and of course, the iconic Twin Towers. RIP
Destroyed by this fictional comet before it was destroyed by Osamas’ ass hol*s.
That “Daddy” comment gets me more than probably any line in any movie. Just the thought of me holding my girls while this happens breaks my heart. Great movie but heartbreaking scene.
No one gave a second thought for the poor camera man.
The CGI was pretty good in this. One of my favourite movies.
The scattering flock of birds, ironically (as it was such a small thing relatively) really took me out of it. We've come quite a long way since then.
I wish I saw this instead of Armageddon back in the day. I was thinking about seeing Deep Impact, but after Armageddon, I wasn't interested in another asteroid movie.
The ship Robert Duvall's character pilots was a model filmed with a motion control camera and composited into the CGI. In the 90s, it was difficult to hold depth-of-field on moving spaceships. Ships with intricate latticework were a PITA to render.
Armageddon looked better stylistically, but this one is less cheesy today.
The water chaos was good for the time, but that shot of the Earth was pretty bad. They depicted it better in 2001: A Space Odyssey roughly 30 years earlier.
The effects were excellent in this movie, and still hold up today!
The part..." Daddy." gets me every time.

Adrenaline is a helluva drug.
He has his girlfriend and her baby sibling on the bike.
Better than the XR80 in T2 that was going like 100 mph 😂

It was. I saw it in theaters in 1998 and remember it. Also, the sound effects of the wave are very eerie and disturbing. I’m bought it in 4K and watched it last night. Pretty intense.
It was so good in theaters!
I remember it. I saw it when my parents. The sound effects made this scene so real that I was frightened. I was 11 when I saw it.
The roar at 1:34 u can hear the most. Literally sounds like a giant eldritch entity roaring
I saw it 3 times as a 13 year old in 1998. It was INCREDIBLE in theaters. I would check every week when it would be available on DVD.
To this day right... This CGI is literally BETTER than 2024 CGI? How is that even possible? Everytime I watch this I'm mind blown at how real it looks, Anyone else or just me?
It really isn't, just watch any high budget movie. See dune part 2, see Andor, watch anything. 26 years later anyone can do more realistic water, see any random blender tutorial or sci fi cinematic

It's very touching how Father and Daughter were finally able to reconcile. But I'm sure he would have rather her be safe in the Ark with the rest of the chosen people!
Ark?
It was a cave system
She knew what she was doing. She made her choice intentionally and chose reconciliation with her father over spending the remainder of her life with the regret that she couldn't. He should be proud of her. She chose to give up her life to give both of them closure. That's how deep family love should run. I know it's just a movie, but it's a very nice example of some of the best qualities mankind can put on display, when confronted with disaster.
This part is an A+++ for me!!!
@@Xylarxcodeso if her father molested her she should still reconcile w/ him?
@@midnightdeluxegaming6582 I don't know where you go molestation from. Where in this movie is it mentioned or even implied that her father had molested her?
She had a rocky relationship with him. That doesn't mean molestation. It just means their relationship was on shaky ground and in the end, when confronted with imminent global disaster, she chose to forgive him and spend her final moments of life with him.
That scene of Denise Crosby looking at her husband before they die is so powerful!

But next time…bigger budget! A pay-per-view event for sure.
They would be building miniature cities and fake a large wave with camera angles.

It's an even blend of practical elements and computer graphics. ILM did some digital fluid simulations for the flooding of Manhattan. Still needed tons of tweaking and fixing by hand. A lot of the remaining stuff was done with practically created (water and splash) elements.

I wonder how the CGI was better 30 years ago. Its getting worse with time. 😊
It's cuz they knew it sucked back then so they tried harder, now they think "oh AI will fix it" so they don't even try.
They keep cutting back in the CGI department to save the budget nowadays for more profit of course.
Yeah back then a lot had to be developed from the ground up. Now it's "oh there is a plugin for that..$200!"

I may be crazy, but have you ever thought that it's just time that there is a Megatsunami alert in the Atlantic? These are different events, but both can cause the ocean's most destructive phenomenon.
There is a fault line underneath NYC. It’s not a matter of IF, it’s a matter of when
Earthquakes aren’t going to cause mega tsunamis; they’re caused by other events, like massive asteroids.
Asteroids of 1km diameter hit Earth on average once every 500,000 years (250x the length of time since the death of Jesus). 5km or higher asteroids have hit us once every 20 million years. They’d then need to land in the Atlantic.
It isn’t about time; it’s not a lot more likely to occur in your lifetime than winning a given lottery.
I’m grateful.

Imagine being the New Yorkers watching the towers fall again rn
Fun side detail: the earth has in real life sustained meteor and comet hits like this one, it happened during the late heavy bombardment, luckily for life on earth, this happened before life (that we know of) was present on earth.
I love how calmly the people are running away.
I always feel sorry for the kitty in the carrier at 1:40
Love how they always show the astroid traveling through atmosphere. That thing would be moving through the atmosphere SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the speed of sound
And BLINDINGLY bright.
that was just from below when the thing was still high up there. when they showed it from above, the impact itself, you could see how fast it really was.
And burning up the atmosphere
From 2:00-2:03 you can see the tops of the former twin towers, and I've seen people comment saying that in our timeline the two planes bought the towers down in real life but the tidal wave in this movie didn't bring them down... no the wave certainly brought down the towers, because the towers here are already leaning on each other and theres still fast rushing water constantly hitting the towers and weakening them further, and once the water recedes those towers would definitely collapse, and really... I think as soon as the tidal wave hit the towers they would've collapsed as it showed when the tidal wave was rushing in on lower manhattan and knocking the other buildings over and into other neighboring buildings, but they were still standing due to "plot armor" so we as the viewers could have point of reference of what part of NYC was under water..
