    Professor Lewin has made Physics look simple, wonderful, and lovely. I have got a PhD in Physics. Studying something is different from understanding it. Honestly speaking, his amazing lectures taught me what Physics is. I'd like to thank him for his great attempts and efforts in teaching Physics.

    Mr. Lewin, thanks to you, I don't need to go to an IIT coaching. After just watching 1 of your amazing lecture, I was able to solve JEE and IE irodov physics problems without hesitation. I don't even need to use a text for my JEE/Olympiad physics, rather use your lectures and make notes. Thank you for making my day!

    Guten Tag, I was a student at TU Berlin in the mid 80s. I used to attend lectures bu a professor of mechnics who made things sound very simple and but at teh same time keeping the mystery of observing nature alive. You do belong to the same category of teachers. Bravo. Lebt Voll. Danek Schon
    Dipl-Ing Paul...ps: i am trying to get my 16 years old kid to watch your videos in physics adventure....she does not like school physics as mechanics, electricity and fluid mechanics etc are described by different laws and teachers explanations are not satisfactory.....she claims there is dark matter in space like the ether of yester years.

    Dear Prof. Lewin,
    I am a huge fan of yours. The first time I heard about your video lectures was in my first year at the University (I studied physics for becoming a high school teacher in Austria). A dutch friend of mine showed me your videos and said proudly that you are from the Netherlands. Some years later a friend of my parents watched all your courses and he said to my parents that I can learn a lot from you. This year is my second year as a teacher in high school and last year another teacher was sick and so I was teaching instead of him. I made an introduction to electricity and used some of your ideas, experiments and explanations from your video lectures. For example I referred to the „fire“ as Benjamin Franklin called it. At that day a pupil went to the principal of the school for a different reason, but the pupil was also taking positive about my introduction to the principal. Thank you and the film crew very much!
    I have a few question to you and I am looking forward to your answer: Do you know the book „Conceptual Physics“ from Paul Hewitt and if you know the book what do you think about it? Do you have book or video advices for me as a beginning physics teacher?

    (Translation by Google) I watch the video regularly because I think it's wonderful, and if I had noticed Walter earlier and understood physics better than today, I would have done everything possible from him to study.
    For me still one of the most brilliant professors of all time.
    But there is, to be honest, one more thing why I keep watching the video. Yes, of course I know that it doesn't belong in the comments here, but I have to adore this beautiful woman (Amy?) From 28:15 to 28:57 every time I see her and ask me what she's doing now. And who is she ?
    Sorry that this doesn't belong here, but the thought drives me crazy in my mind.

      Each magnet has a north and a south pole. The north pole of magnets in compasses point to the magnetic pole in Northern Canada (it's 503 mies from the Earth geographic pole). Thus that is the magnetic South pole of Earth.

      Is it because the confetti has both positive and negative charges on both sides. The side of the paper bit which is more positive is attracted and stuck but the side of paper bit which has more negative charge(along with positive) is first attracted then repelled to comb which is negative.

      I suggest you start watching my 8.01 lectures and see whether you can handle the calculus and the simple differential eqs. Then do the same for 8.02 and after that 8.03. The math will get more difficult but perhaps you can handle it. The math needed for QM (quantum field theory) and for General Relativity is MUCH more difficult.

    Thank you so much Professor. I am going through the 8.01 videos and I understand some things and others are just me not knowing and my curiosity to find out . I will most likely find and take some sort of math classes to help me. I never took calculus, nothing beyond high school math but I grasp what you teach because of the way you present it and the 8.01 help videos are so, well ... helpful. If you can recommend some calculus learning videos I would greatly appreciate it but i can hear you saying "google" already =). Thank You for your time Professor good day too you.

      You may have a rough time to follow my lectures without some basic knowledge of calculus. I cannot recommend any math book, but I suggest you search on the web.

      +george ashvad Soles don't have the required very high resistance. However, if I stood on a 3 cm thick glass plate (as I do when I beat the student) then the current through me to the ground is negligibly small.

      BTW, if we want to calculate the initial velocity of a ball being thrown up in the sky, do we need to use calculus to determine it? How do physics problems so blatantly mention that the initial velocity is this and this. How do we calculate it?

      +Lectures by Walter Lewin. They will make you ♥ Physics. Hi Professor Lewin... It turnes out that mineral electrolites such as potasium and chloride, ect and antioxidents such as vitamin A, C and E, ect are all huge electron donors and neutralize free radicals or proton ions.
      When we are born and when we are very young, we have more negative charge than positive charge, but over time we loose this overbalance of electron advantage and become cationic overall.
      To combat this proton over ballance, we can rebuild our negative charge by grounding to the earth, (because the Earth carries a negative charge at the surface) and we can further build negative charge with electrolites and antioxidents. The health implications of negative charge and negative ions are profound and I would like to recieve the Nobel Prize for the work I have done and for the work of countless others who have made this understanding possible. My understanding of electrostatic charge was made posible in part through MIT OCW and by some very dedicated peple at MIT and by many others who have shared their understanding on this life changing revolution. Understanding negative electron charge is truly the greatest health breakthrough of the 21 st Century. Thank you again so much.

    respected sir this is one question which no one answers to my satisfaction. If charges can't be created,then how did they come to existence on earth? I do know it was due to big bang explosion..But if they can't be created,they shouldn't be present,right?
    I mean if we can't be born,we can't live here too,right?

      The conservation of charges does NOT mean that charges cannot be created. It means that for every minus charge you create there will also have ti be a positive one with the same magnitude.

      After the big bang the same amount of neg (electrons) and pos (protons) charge were created. Thus the net charge of the Universe is ZERO.

    Vandaag was er een voetbal kamp, en de hitte was immens op dat veld! En de normale grasvelden waren lekker koel.

      Ghost Ghost we have added subtitles to my 35 8.01 lectures. It's expensive and very time consuming. We are now trying to also add subtitles to 8.02. I am sorry but it is NOT possible to add subtitles to most non-lecture videos. The exception is "For the Love of Physics".

    Can someone explain to me why he refers to the magnetic North Pole as South in in this lecture in layman's terms. I am very interested in magnetic fields and would love to know why he refers to the magnetic north as south. I know they constantly switch but from a thesis perspective why does is he intrinsically believe this?

      We can measure the direction of the magnetic dipole field from Earth. Near the geographic South pole the magnetic field lines are UP, thus that is the magnetic North pole. Near the geographic North pole the magnetic field is pointing down. Thus the magnetic North pole is near the geographic South pole and the magnetic South pole is near the geographic North pole.

      So to echo the other person responding here, is that if you look at a magnet, one end of the magnet is the magnetic south, while the other is the magnetic north. You can use a tool that you bring to the magnet will tell you which end is N and S. If you were to take that tool theoretically to the magnetic pole located in Canada (Northern Hemisphere), it would show that pole to be magnetically a South pole, and the magnetic pole in the southern hemisphere would be shown as N. So the North Magnetic Pole is actually magnetically south, and vice versa. Hope this helps. Another way to remember is that the compass magnet itself has its magnetic north pole pointing to the Northern Hemisphere's magnetic pole.

      The Earth Magnetic field is a dipole field (magnetic monopoles do not exist). A magnetic compass has a magnetic needle. When the needle was made magnetic, the North pole of the needle was colored RED. This red end of the needle will be attracted by a the South pole of any magnet thus also by the Earth magnet. Since the red end of the needle will point to the North, the magnetic pole of the Earth which is close to the geographic North pole, is actually the Earth magnetic SOUTH POLE.

      not true I have no Parkinson - already in 1998 when I lectured at MIT for 600 students in 26-100 (MIT's largest class room) would have shakes. It was then determined that it is due to adrenaline - At home (now at agge 88) *zero shakes*
