Off Grid Outdoor Kitchen at the Log Cabin, Why Build It?

I'm building the outdoor kitchen at the off grid homestead because it gets too hot inside the log cabin when i cook with the wood stove in the summer. The cabin stays nice and cool under the shade of the forest trees, but it does not stay that way if I cook inside over the fire. Why did I put it so close to the cabin and out in front? The same reason your kitchen at home is in the most convenient location for living - it's the hub, the heart of the home. I do not want to walk too far from the cabin to cook my meals on the grill or in the pizza bread oven, especially if it's raining or snowing out.
Why is the roof line uneven and sweeping up? The west side is higher than the right to let the smoke from the barbecue escape easier and also to get it up higher out of the way of sparks from the grill and the rocket stove. Besides the practical reason, I wanted to create more an of an organic shape rather than the typical sloped roof.
Where did I get the building material from? The logs I cut down last year on my own property, on my friend's property and on my sister's property. The 1" boards I purchased from a small local mill for a very cheap price. I am handcutting the cedar shakes from the offcuts from the log cabin as well as from other trees.

Thanks for watching again. I am sitting inside on this beautiful day editing another video for release on Wednesday, appropriately about how I'm dealing with the bugs. Up until now, they haven't been an issue really in the immediate area around the cabin, but for the past few days, I'm getting extra annoyed by mosquitoes, blackflies and deer flies - triple threat! My solution - get out on the lake and go fishing as much as possible!

Hey Shawn - love watching what your doing and achieving! I watch every Friday after work and dream how I can achieve something like you have on my weekends. I've spent time in the Huntsville area (primarily Dorset and Dwight) and still can't figure out how to manage the bugs. Although not self reliant, have you ever tried the electronic repellents? Is there any reliable solution you recommend or tried with some success?

Hello Shawn - I am an architect; just want to let you know I really appreciate and welcome your "organic" outdoor kitchen, and also love the fact that you can build these structures from the heart: not from some IBC / IRC cookbook! Sometimes I wish I could do the same... but ah - you know - life safety and safety first. Really fun watching you put this together and I think it is fun for you too! Well done and many thanks for sharing.

The kitchens appearance is coming from you and your creative mind, its an artistic flair and I find that you can build houses for a living and its just a job, but build one for yourself and its a part of who you are. on a side note I think it would be Tolkien approved as well.

Thank you Shawn, you are changing lives for the better. May it long continue

I was really scratching my head on this build, and now it all makes total sense. Also, I admire how you do what you can, but also don't get caught up in the "purity" of any topic like off grid, or hand tools, or log cabins, whatever. Makes it much more approachable. Thanks, and take care.

Hi again! Perfect answer to the problem of best inside the cabin. Fun as always watching the kitchen grow. I'm still amazed some of the things you do! Even if you didn't need it the kitchen as you described would be fun anyway. If it works you don't knock it right!?! What works for you folks is how it should be! Nature is so special and you're in a great spot. Inside the cabin now looks so homey and comfortable now too. Great job Shawn! Thx for sharing your projects. It's been so fun tagging along! Love your idea of keeping your building more organic. I have been following you for just over a year, love your videos. I live in Idaho now but use to live in Wisconsin. But I always try to get into the forest or mountains, now I camp in a small motorhome. I’m to old and disabled to go to far off the road. Remembering back before you started the cabin and while I enjoyed all your pre-cabin videos and continue to enjoy all your non-cabin-related videos I want you to know what a wonderful thing it is you're doing with your channel and how much it's appreciated. You make the world a better place. God's blessing on you and all whom you love. Hope to meet you one day. Looking forward to the next vid, as always.

At first I thought this was going to be a playground for the kids...
This makes much more sense, outdoor hangout spot with kitchen.
The kids can build a tree house. :)

My friend has an 1880s lumbermens Cabin in original condition...
...and he added a window up in the gable end to vent heat in the summertime, it helps a lot.

You need to build a smoker for the salmon and meat, be great to make beef jerky for those long winter nights! Full of protein too!

Amazing to see all the love you apply to your cabin - to your place and world. Its also an excellent example how to live with harmony with nature. I wish my people (Portugal) could learn a lot more with you, it would be good to preserve our nature.
Keep going! Best regards from a Portuguese fan! :)

Aah, now I understand why not cooking inside at summer, keeping cabin chill and cozy at summer, not too hot when going to sleep. ♥♥ Great video Shawn again.

I wind my working week down by watching your amazing videos, so very relaxing for me, even though you are working your butt off somehow you make it look easy even though it can't be. I like the very little dialogue, after being surrounded by people and noise all week it is a relief to the soul to watch a quiet, peaceful man at work (and Callie of course).

I love your films and projects. Looking forward to see more.
