In this episode of the forest kitchen, I make a primitive earthen oven for pizza and bread baking using mud, a adobe mixture of clay, sand and grass knows as cobb or cob - primitive technology. The outdoor kitchen at the off grid log cabin is just about ready to start using for all of my meals, from grilling on the barbecue and frying on the rocket stove to baking in the oven, I can cook full meals, process wild game and fish and wild edibles that I harvest from the surrounding wilderness. In episode 11 next week, I build the roof over the primitive oven and shingle it with cedar shingles, and start hollowing out the earthen oven, removing the sand form.

I've just watched a middle-aged man build a sand castle in the woods and enjoyed every minute of it.
My sincere condolences to you and your family, may the memories of your great aunt bring a smile to your face, love to your heart and peace to your soul.
So very sorry for your loss. I too have had regrets for not visiting enough. Life can get in our way at times, so this is something I feel is worth scheduling. May you find comfort in your time of sorrow.
I could spend an eternity watching your videos and never get bored, I'm sorry to hear about your loss, my thoughts go out to you and you family.
I have been recovering from cancer these past few weeks and your videos kept my mind nice and calm so wanted to comment and extend my thanks.
Callie is watching you with adoration in her face...you can tell she loves you...you are blessed....Ann from Georgia. USA
Hi Shawn, I live in the Scottish Highlands. When we first moved here 20 years ago we lived in a very old stone house and your videos are bringing back so many awesome memories: -20 outside, not much warmer indoors (one of our fireplaces had a dodgy back boiler and our water supply had frozen even though it was 3' underground; we couldn't risk lighting fires in that part of the house). I remember putting things in the fridge to bring them UP to a reasonable temperature, bringing in snow to melt in the one warm room we had (my office) to use for drinking and the loo, flaky electricity ... Even my Land Rover door handles froze. I spent three days in my office with my black labrador lying on my feet (we shared a couple of hot water bottles that I had put on the floor), gathering snow, and digging out wood, rubbing ice from inside the windows.
But the light! The light in your videos takes me right back to then. It was incredibly beautiful. And the sky, especially at night - best part was lying in a deck chair sipping at a couple of drams of whisky with a splash of melted water from our burn (stream), wrapped in sleeping bags and watching the stars; no bears or wolves, thankfully.
My husband was away on business for most of the worst (best) of it, and I still had some work to attend to finishing an interior design project by candlelight which was in itself a challenge! The really cold weather only lasted about four days, but when it broke you knew it. We lay in bed at 3 am until dawn listening to huge blocks of ice wash down from the lochan on top of our hill into the river in front of our house; it was incredible - something that I believe few people will ever experience, and a huge privilege.
I never experienced it as cold again (we moved to nearer the coast and to a slightly warmer house), and the weather has not been anywhere near as cold for the past ten years anyway. But it was one of my most wonderful experiences so far in Scotland, and the essence of why we came to live here. I now live in the metropolis of Inverness (huh!) and watching your videos makes me want to rush back to the wilds and do it all again. And this time with a 12 year old daughter in tow.
Thank you for these videos, the inspiration, and for helping me out my complacency.
Gael
PS I also just used this comment on one of your earlier videos without realising that it was posted seven months ago; saying that what a phenomenal difference - it has taken me seven months to tidy my shed!
1507Lachlan hi Lachan, we were up here on holiday the week after my husband was made redundant. We stopped in Glen Affric and decided never to go back. We did of course but only to pack up (we luckily had a business that we could move up with us). We spent five years living near Dornoch before my daughter was born. It is beautiful. There are opportunities up there but quite a few people doing similar things, so you'd need an angle ;). I love Rannoch Moor - a proper wilderness. It seems to be more and more commercialised up here now which takes something of its specialness away. I am glad I experienced it when I did. All the best.
Sorry to hear about your loss. My prayers are with you & your family at this difficult time. God bless.
Love your mom as much as possible. I lost my mother last June 16 and I miss her very much. OBTW, time goes by fast and it never slows down!
I'm very sorry for your loss. I've been there more than I care to recall. Family is so special. Just today I took the opportunity to watch my 5 year old granddaughter and her 6 month old baby brother. I had lots of plans for today, but this was way more important.
I truly enjoy your videos. You have a way of putting things into perspective which cultivates thought. I genuinely appreciate the time that you take to make these.
Thank you.
Nice job on the oven. After watching you eat your wife's sourdough bread in so many of your videos, I finally went to your website, found the recipe, and made the bread. It came out great the very first time. Please thank Mrs. James on my behalf. I really enjoy your channel, thanks again!
Thanks. That's great!
I'm so sorry about your Aunt....A lot of times when someone we care about passes we always have regrets and wishes. The best thing we can do for them is remember the happy fun times we spent with them. I think that is what they would want. To celebrate their life and happy joyful times and not focus on any regrets. May God bless and comfort you, your Mom and your family as well as your Aunts friends!!!!
When I read the words, "starting to collapse, I'll have to start over" my heart sank! It's coming along so very nicely! My condolences to you and your family's loss. Even though you didn't get to do the things you wanted with her, I believe you'll feel her presence when you're out there and a gentle breeze touches your face, or you hear the beauty of rustling leaves in the wind. No doubt she is very proud of you and all you've accomplished!
Sorry for your loss Shawn, and wise words, family is the most precious thing we have in this world. Thanks as usual for sharing and keep up the amazing work!
How can anyone dislike these videos? You have to wonder exactly what triggers these poor lost souls. Great content!!
When I was growing up I admired the older generation and watched how they carried themselves and their mannerisms. I am so glad I listened to the stories they told me like how they grew up during hard times and during the big war. It's so different in todays world and glad it hasn't changed who I am.
May your Great Aunt Gloria’s Memory be a true blessing to you, and your family Shawn....
I found you about a month ago or around there and I was watching this video this morning about your aunt who passed on I know this is a while back but thank you 4 the balance you've helped me find in the last few weeks through watching door building in homesteading efforts. My dad and I do a Bible study over the phone on Tuesdays and we were in Mark 4 21 and on about the Mustard Seed yesterday. The tiny seeds that are planted is amazing how far they can grow and reach to others. So regardless of politics or religion just in spirit of agape thank you and your wife and daughters are beautiful and I get so much joy from watching Cali
You probably don't hear this often enough, but your vision for your life, and your attitudes, are magnificent. Thanks again for taking us all along. And sorry to hear of your family's loss.
I am envious of how you pull these tasks all together!!
Классная духовка!!!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😎😎😎u
Thats just amazing nothing else 2 say.
I have recently lost a close family member and I share your sadness at her passing. please try to celebrate the great things that you shared and remember her for them. She shaped the future generations with her character and integrity
Love the interaction with Kali (sp?) I used to have a Golden Retriever too, Kiska, she was the sweetest dog. I see her in Kali. Still miss that dog.
Lost my Dad in 94. Mom went in 2011. Stepdad went b4 Mom. Been losing aunts and uncles & 1 cousin ever since around 2005. I'm running out of kin. Remember the good times with your aunt Shawn. Sounds like she was a real Hoot & fun to be with. Cherish those times.
Cali best dog ever!!!
Beautiful update! I never thought you could (or should) build an oven using flammable materials, really curious how this turn out. And thanks for the rainy impressions!
Sorry for your loss Shawn, it's never easy losing anyone. One day though as you think of those you lost a smile will come to your face instead of tears and you will know that even though they are gone they are still in your thoughts.
Sorry for your loss. You are so right about seeing loved ones as often as possible. My brother just passed away and I didn't get a chance to say goodbye either. Hi to Mrs Shawn and pats to Cali .....
Liking the looks of that bread oven! You must do a lot of research before starting each project to find what will work best in your area (and what’s most fun to create). Kudos. How wonderful to know you remember your great aunt so fondly. You honor her with your memories.
She lives on in everything she taught you by the example of how she lived her life. The words you spoke about her on this video have brought her into our lives as well. We grieve with you. Thank you for sharing a little about her with your growing youtube family. I'm sure many prayers will be offered, and memories shared with your family for a long time to come.
I found the video fascinating, from sifting the soil to making the cobb to have a first collapse on the oven. Like many others, I see your video up as soon as I turn on the computer, zip over and hit the Like button as soon as the Play button is hit. There is always much to learn, and beauty to be seen. Cali is a joy, and hopefully the rain refreshes everything. Loved the cutting board, and those sandwiches looked mouthwatering! As usual, I get a little snack after watching your video :D I love that leather-wrapped coffee mug! Meant to say that in an earlier video. If you had some with your logo stamped on them, I bet they would sell on your store :)
Let's start a Cali fan club! She is beautiful and loves you so much. I really enjoy
watching you cook, we also only use cast iron skillets to cook. Sorry for your loss,
she sounded like a fun person. Thanks for all your hard work.
I don't understand how people can "Dislike" this video? What is there to dislike what Shawn James is doing? I wish that there was "Love" option, because this is just amazing what he is doing!
I am extremely sorry to hear that you lost a family member I do appreciate your videos and I am sorry for you keep your head up!
Love when you take time to your dog, a very faithful dog who follow every step you take. Enjoy your work process, when you take time to show every step you take, also when it’s fail. Thank you for sharing your amazing video. Sorry to hear about your family. God bless you and your family
Absolutely Shawn time goes to quickly. Appreciate life while you can. Sorry for your loss and celebrate your Aunt's life.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Please accept my condolences.
Keep up with these great videos. You are an inspiration to me and countless others.
Hey Shawn, I love how the kitchen is coming along! It's fun to see you using a real chef's knife and cutting boards in more recent videos...rather than the bush-craft knives and raw planks you were using in earlier times...I get a chuckle out of the upgrades! Thanks for the videos...I always look forward to them with great anticipation. Sorry for your loss. Prayers for your family.
Our condolences Shawn I lost my mum 2 months ago and am amazed how it has affected me but now I am finding it had strengthened my resolve to finish our house truck.... Im not sure if she is watching and sending so energy my way but the motivation has come from somewhere! Draw strength from her passing.
As always love your work
Vera Garcia Sorry to hear about you’re mum. If in fact that’s you in the picture (idk maybe daughter) you look pretty young. My point being I lost my father when I was 22, extremely sudden is death. Here today I’m 45 & I have had some ups & downs dealing with life. Keep pushing along on that house truck, mum is proud of u. Apologies if TMI.
Actually I was watching this on my wife's youtube account and she is actually in her thirty's but looks like a teenager and still gets asked for I.D ,,,its her picture. Thanks a lot for your support.
Shawn love watching your videos...love Canada..we had many yrs of the best vacations up there and miss that awesome Canadian Bacon...yummo...the best..I am a 73 yr old Grandma now who enjoys your videos...so sorry of your loss as well...many good memories of time spent there ..
Condolences on your great aunt's passing. At 72 I think I'm the oldest except for a few cousins.
Loved ones deaths are always a time of reflection. Lots of good family memories. Blessings.
This one of my favourite relaxing videos
Shawn, the next one you make try building the center core from wet sand, then cover with wet paper, then a 3" layer of cob without grass, then a 3" or so layer with grass. After the dome dries a bit you can dig out the sand. Works like a charm!
Scott Brooks that's what I was thinking but I've never done a cob anything before. My only experience is watching Townsend's videos. Lol
I am a 66 year old Widower, who has been a Bushcrafter for most of my life... I LOVE your channel! Cali is ADORABLE! I have a 6 year old Great Pyrenees, Lilly, who could be Cali's twin! Lilly is my CONSTANT companion 24/7, and is very curious about Cali!
Aaahhhh....I could listen to that rain all day long! So calming!!
Shawn I have been trying to find out why the design of the forest kitchen ROOF. I like it just wandering why
Thank you for this lovely long video really enjoyed it . So sorry for your loss. God bless from Australia.
I am sorry to hear of your loss. Our elders are precious and their knowledge and love goes with them.
thanks for your time and i am sorry for your loss. i loved how Cali looks at you as if saying "you know dad there are guys who can do that for you so we can go play" one lovely retriever you have there
nice work on the oven Shawn. my condolences for your great aunt. take care.
Great video as always! If you're looking for a way to waterproof the oven you should check out whitewash, it's a mixture of quicklime and animal fat that was commonly used on earthenwork in the middle ages.
I'm sorry for your loss to you and your family, no truer words spoken about spending time with family! God Bless!
Shawn...I lost the use of my legs to Blood Clots in 2004. I LOVED the outdoors and still do. I just wanted you to know how much You and Cali are appreciated!!! Your channel ignites the memories of when I could enjoy projects. Thank You and I look forward to Fridays!!!!!
1 I love how you collect all the clips from different days, even weeks apart and put it into one video instead of doing what everyone else does and uploading every time they do one thing, often leaving out the conclusion making it highly frustrating to watch. Your videos are complete.
Thank you
great idea to use the wagon to sift the dirt' very inovative' keep up the good work and videos
95 years of age is a good long life. With the passing of my uncle, I found it helpful to reflect on the fullness of his life, the positive impact he had on so many people, and the inspiration he provided me personally. He had 59 years. It doesn't erase the pain of his passing, but when I think of him, it's like he's still there (here) for me and that is comforting and brings a smile to my face every time. I am sorry for your loss.
I am so sorry for your loss. She sounds like she was a wonderful woman and you have beautiful memories of her.
Whenever you pick up a shovel and start digging around in the pile of muck, Cali takes interest , she must think that all you do is play all day .lol
Best CZcams Channel period.
Such a great tribute to your Great Aunt Gloria. I'm sure she and her family were up there watching it.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and processes. Watching you, I feel like I'm back on the family farm; it's very relaxing and comforting. I'm sorry for your loss of your Great Aunt Gloria. I hope you get time to celebrate her life.
First time commenting, long time watching... Condolences to you n your's for your loss. Hard when one's elder passes n we look at just how they influenced our own lives n just how important they will always be to us.. Great start on the oven.. You got this ... Like the champ that you are.. Thanks!
Bill Murray m
Shawn, stomping on the grass and mud looks like a scene from the 10 commandments! I like it !
Chalk up another great video for Shawn! My condolences to you and family for your loss! Hoping and praying your needs are met in such a solemn time!
Killbear holds very special memories for me too for many years. Condolences to you.
I was eating before i went to my pc to watch your video and now im sitting here again hungry becouse of you cooking :D
Such an important message. Lost my little brother in a car accident a few months ago, then my last grandparent passed away on my birthday a month later. Spend all the time you can with loved ones, because you honestly never know what will happen tomorrow.
Love your vids, just found your channel in the last few weeks and have binge watched them all. Thank you for all that you do, it is a delightful escape sometimes.
~Rachael 💚
I'm sorry to hear that
Much appreciate Shawn. Likewise about your great Aunt. Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, but there are so many delightful things that show themselves when the sun comes up each day.
From this Kiwi girl in Australia :)
Condolences to you Shawn and to your entire family on the loss of your Great Aunt. You're all in my prayers.
I have enjoyed every video I’ve watched. You remind me of my grandfather in the early 50’s with your stamina and skills.
You are the true meaning of hard work. I love your place, truly amazing.
Shawn,
First let me extend my deepest condolences for you and your family’s loss. Like someone so eloquently posted here- you brought her life and gave her meaning in the story you shared - just beautiful.
Second this for you :
Excerpt from Walden - Henry David Thoreau
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear, nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion. For most men, it appears to me, are in a strange uncertainty about it, whether it is of the devil or of God, and have somewhat hastily concluded that it is the chief end of man here to “glorify God and enjoy him forever.”
Look forward to all your videos. Thankyou for making my life full of hope.
Many condolences and much love sent. Prayers for comfort for your family. And as always thanks for the video.
Sorry for your loss Shawn , but, she lived a long life with lots of people who loved her. Who could ask for more!
Ok, Ok, now I get what you were doing with the oven. Just like every other armchair engineer and do it yourselfer, I was thinking, I would ... lol ... Now I get it. Nice job. Even though the circumstances are somber, enjoy your time with your family, build memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this.
Absolutely the best channel on CZcams. I look forward to Friday every week just so I can see your video and see how much you have accomplished. I'm so impressed and grateful you show all of us your skills.
Sorry for your loss. Definitely a great message to spend more time with those we love.
Love how cali looks up at you while you mixing the mud
For a bit there, all I could think of was Richard Dreyfuss creating his image of the Devil's Tower out of dirt in his house during Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
This videos are incredibly relaxing, thank you. Also, sorry for your loss
Thanks for the post Shawn. Another great vid, enjoy your family time, sorry for your loss. Makes us always think how we need to spend more time with family and loved ones when hearing such stories.
very sorry to hear of your loss' your aunt sounds like she was an amazing woman' my prayers are going out' for strength and healing for the family' , your aunt knows your heart and your best wishes.blessings to you shawn' with love from oregon state
Hi, Shawn. It will be quite a long comment, but it may be useful as an idea for another video from your great cabin. In last episodes you show us the next stages of work on your buildings around - kitchen and other Self Reliance tips. Excellently. If you need something to chill out hard things, you can always make a short "tour" around your cottage, show us what is done and how it changed. As I can see at first you had a bed made in the form of a seat near the table, now the bed is probably in the attic, right? At first you had an ordinary table, now a whole cupboard with a runoff, a water tank and other stuff. Doors and windows looks a bit different after months, right?
Keep up this great work, it's good for you as your self reliance and for us - subscribers - to look how your passion grows ;)
Best wishes from Pomorze (eng. Pomerania)!
And PS - I realy would like to buy your darkgreen coffee mug! :)
Dude, you should take smaller doses or change your dealer.
I always wait on your videos
You are a true craftsman. It's a pleasure to see your work. Everything you do is top quality. Cooking, building all of it.
Thanks Shawn: Elderly hate to think they are diminished or imposing but prefer to meet life as it comes. Having said that the things I love most are times with my younger relatives. That is quite an open kitchen you are developing. Thanks Brian 78
This video is perfect relaxation after work :)
Cook Cook Cook and Away 🙌🏻
So when’s the Outdoor Kitchen Party James...

I'm so sorry for your loss, Shawn. Prayers for comfort for all who loved Gloria.

With *Holandaise sauce.* NEVER in over 60yr ever had that sauce in my mouth. Gotta make that happen agin SOON. Great vid Shawn.
"Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity." Horace Mann American educator and politician (1796 - 1859) Food for thought for ALL of us.
Neither have any of the other religions, Nature Boy.
I'm sorry for your family loss. I wish you and your mother great strength in these hard times. Thank you for sharing this very nice video though.
Sorry for your loss! I hope that you enjoy the upcoming time you spend with your parents. Life is too short, see and do as much as humanly possible, in the end it'll be worth it. My condolences again. Take care Shawn
First sorry for your loss.
Your video /audio skills and equipment are top of the line and the only youtube content I watch in 1080p .P.S. the rain sounds were very tranquil and about put me to sleep.😌
The best thing that happened to CZcams. Kitchen's coming along beautifully and the video is superb as always.🐾🐕🐾
Thanks!

need a little hand sickle for harvesting that grass
There are no words for easing the loss of a loved one, but you have made a very good point -- thank you for speaking on this subject.
And i will say it more than once i really sooo much appreciate ..,just hearing the natural things as sweeping ..making mud concret’ hearing the wind and rain .,watching you and cali just living together without saying or hearing any kind of music..
Don’t know if you realize all this as the listners ...does....i think we are all appreciating...
I would say you are having the time of your life doing all this.
Coming along nicely!
Thank You Sir,
I am very sorry for your loss.
I just lost my parents this year.
Prayers for you and all that love this lady.
You're absolutely right when you said we need to spend more time with loved-ones...I wish I had spent more time with my parents, even though I was around and took care of them until they passed, I should have spent the time with them while they were able to get around and do things. They both loved the outdoors, walking through the woods, and just enjoying nature. I think back often of all the things I could have done, but didn't. Both of them would have loved your videos...especially my Mom...This was her kind of place! I guess it's rubbed off on me because I can't hardly wait until you post a new video to see what all you have done...I feel as though I am there myself. Keep up the good work, and maybe you could bring your parents up for a visit, I'm sure they would enjoy it as well!
