Quick visual demonstration of the new Palette control implemented in the JD-800 Model Expansion when installed on a Roland JUPITER-X or JUPITER-Xm synthesizer.
The Palette function lets you display the values set for partials 1-4 in a row and edit them, for the partial parameter you last edited .
Slides from the JD-800 Model Expansion Owner’s Manual, available at www.roland.com/global/product...

Thanks for the tip. I will never understand how Roland expects us to remember all the combos/shortcuts on their synths.
And as if it wasn’t complicated enough, they got different combos for the X and the Xm :)
It’s like playing Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter literally.

I wonder how the JD’s sophisticated envelopes are mapped though, are they using the ADSR knobs as well ? How do they deal with the additional time steps of the Time Variant envelopes ?

Funny you should ask! At this very moment, I’m working on a document (and it will likely outline a new video soon) that touches on that very subject. Classic models map very well to the controls. Multi-partials (Zen-Core and XV) can map to Scene/Part offsets, or to the Tone Partial(s) if you select the right controls. But JD is different; it’s a multi-partial model, but controls still map directly to the currently selected partial itself, rather than offset. Plus it uses a range of 0-100 , rather than the 128 of Offsets, or high-res 1024 of classic models. But to answer your question: A=Time 1, D=Time 3, S=Sus Level, R=Time 4, for the Partial(s) currently selected. Basically, Time 2 is there in the menu, but not mapped. You can get to it easily with SHIFT+ENV button/knob, and it will be close in the menu. But the Palette mode doesn’t work for ADSR functions because those knobs are repurposed in that mode. So on Xm for instance, you can bring up Palette, twist Cutoff, then use ADSR knobs to adjust TVF Cutoff for each Partial. But when Palette is on, you’re limited to adjusting Envelopes in the menu. Better then to not use Palette, and adjust TVF and TVA Envelopes by selecting Partials and using the knobs accordingly.
It sounds worse than it is when I type it out, lol

Hi! Thank you for your videos. I actually have the Roland JD-08 and I love the palette. SO, I was wondering if it's the same on the Jupiter-XM, like....can you select filter cutoff or LFO or whatever and then use the 4 knobs/slider palette to modify the filter cutoff or LFO or whatever on every tone independently (like the JD-08)? Just thinking about selling the JD-08 if the Jupiter-XM can do that (I haven't with me at the moment, so I can't try by myself). Thanks a lot!!!

Yes, there is a Palette function for the JD-800 model expansion, which is nicely implemented. You can see the details in its brief manual on page 14:

Hi, I'm sorry for this OT question. But do you understand where and what EXACTLY should I set, what Roland says? "The Problem of No Sound Playing with Ver.1.40 (March 5, 2021). Setting [SYSTEM EQ/COMP] - [MASTER COMP] to "ON" results in no sound being played. Please use the unit with [MASTER COMP] set to "OFF."" Thank you!

Yes. In the Systems menu, you can actually page to the right and the left to access System-wide settings for effects, EQ, and a compressor. Try it. Go into the System menu and tap the right > button. That will take you to the Compessor. If your using it, turn it off until they get this fix out. OTOH, if you didn’t know about this setting or page, chances are it’s already off and you are not impacted by it.

@@RobertSaintJohn Thanks a lot! 👍 I have no problem (as I see, my settings are already off). I just wanted to understand what Roland was saying. And his information is bad for an inexperienced user like me.

@@vladimirklaus70 Yes, the text was too short to be very helpful. I think Support was getting a lot of messages about it. And they knew a lot of people would be updating to 1.40 this weekend, so they just wanted to get the warning right up front to those users.
