on a 90 degree V8 there is only 1 thing that determines the ratio of torque to hp (as it pertains to the bottom end). That is Bore vs stroke. Large bore short stroke is better for hp and high rpm. Large stroke and small bore is better for torque and low RPM. Believe it or not the 383 STILL has a bore to stroke ratio that favors hp over torque. 3.75" stroke and 4.030" bore... For instance a 5.4 ford triton has one of the most torquey bore to stroke ratios i've ever seen @ huge 4.17" stroke and tiny 3.55" bore size. This engine has a lot more stroke than even a 454 Big Block Chevrolet.... My point is that the main factors that contribute to the hp/torque ratio on these engines are related to heads/fuel/intake/cam/etc. Adding a longer stroke helps... The reason why this is so interesting is that the 5.4 triton falls on it's face (relatively speaking) if you're building it to race however great towing torque.... A 383 can tow like a mule and STILL put out big hp for racing. When it comes to torque be sure to Thank your vortec heads for being a very high intake velocity design. When we port vortec heads we hardly mess with the intake side aside from cleanup and adding bigger valves. The exhaust side of these heads is pure trash. We remove a lot of material and see a night and day difference on these heads when we address the exhaust side
Nice build! I do have a 565 lbs tq 350 std bore w vortec style cylinder heads. Does this qualify? Ur vintage 350 ci still reigns supreme. Hard to beat. I used to race years ago worked in a machine shop w cylinder heads. The dirt track racers started using the newer vortec heads for a reason. They would open up the exhaust ports and get gobs more power and torque along w milling the heads down to 49cc combustion chambers! No joke. I have several sets of these heads. You would have to spend thousands of hard earned cash,to get other cylinder heads to compete! Plus u can add nitrous for higher numbers! I have a std 350 w vortec cylinder heads that pumps out 750hp w near that in torque all w a small shot of gas! Lol and outlast a 383 ci.😁 😱💯
They flow a little bit better. Maybe 15 hp with this cam. The AFR heads allow much bigger cams than stock Vortec heads can take without reworking them. So if I ran a much bigger cam with AFR heads then power numbers could be way higher.
Hey great 383 and great truck! What size wheels and brand tires size are those front and rear? Looks bigger than a 15x10 and looks bigger than a 295 fifty. 2nd gen camaro of my momma's has a lot of room and i would like to try that size right there in this vid. A ton wider and bigger than your other videos of this truck.
They’re 15x10s front and back. 275/60/15 on the rear and 255/60/15 in the front. The rears are actually the same size as my Camaro’s rear tires, they just look a lot different with the truck’s proportions.
I have a 4 bolt with vortec heads and edlebrock 650 Av2 carb. Elgin RV cam 2000 rpm stall and shorty headers. I am gonna stroke it. Whwt needs to be done to cam and heads? Anything? Thanks great video!!
Yes! If someone is gonna drop in a 350 they might as well go 383!

i have an 01 GMC running 13 PSI boost and believe it or not, a 3400 rpm stall works great for me on street and off road, stock cam with big RRs
Yep very cool 😎

Thank you for sharing the video. How much better would your 383 run with the AFR heads?

What cam u running in square body
I picked up a set of 906 Vortec heads for $150 going to build a 350 into a 383 and throw it in my maverick 💪🏽
That’ll be a quick car!
I’d say so
I would have saved both vehicles and just run 350. Usually here cars like that get stolen and end up wrecked aka see to have. Watch your vehicle
Don't lock your doors and bring along a rottweiler
No
