Why your car runs slower AFTER you tune it. Hint, it's not the tune.

  • Ever get your car tuned, and after it's tuned it's slower, well there's many potential reasons as to why, and this is the most common reason your car is either slower or runs the same time AFTER you have a custom tune installed in the vehicle.

    I know my Audi A4 was tuned, and consistently ran mid-4 second 0-60 times, rain or shine - only 290whp, but felt super fast part-throttle or full-throttle. In contrast, my BMW has been tuned/retuned over and over, and it feels slow, even with more theoretical power at the engine. Only the first tune I had, with DME tuning, and the car felt super fast, and likely pulled timing - I have never been able to get even close to that on any other setup. Yes, weather makes a difference, but unless it's drastic different, you shouldn't notice it (5-10hp). For the most part the reason why cars feel slower when tuned/modded is because there are so many variables that work together and the ECU (car computer) and there are causes that regulate the power. Might sound wack, but after years of tuning I'm also convinced that certain car manufactures implement covert anti-tuning measures which can detect enhanced fuel/air parameters and regulate the actual power the car is making. This is probably to discourage tuning of base models to perform like more pricey up-models (eg tuning an BMW 330i to perform very close to a standard 340i). Also keep in mind- most tuners don't tune for part-throttle improvements, it's full-throttle or nothing. If you are coming from a refined tune like Unitronic or APR, for example, an independent custom tuner may allow for 10-15 more peak whp at WOT, but the power won't necessarily feel as responsive and smooth.

  • @mark303murphy
    @mark303murphy Před 6 lety +2

    Some tuners are stuck in that old mind set of everything needs to be static in order to be good and consistent. So maybe not a Lund tune, but others it could be the tune. With modern ecu calibration the benefit is you can be dynamic and adaptive so that the engine runs optimally in all conditions external or internal. Counter intuitively this actually produces a more consistent car as the weather effects how it performs less, not more. Thanks Alex for your great content (informative or entertaining ) keep it coming.

For example everyone is used to seeing mid to high 12s in a ISF in CZcams but when someone in PR does a pass and runs mid to low 13s they start blaming the driver. When here in PR it's usually very hot and humid.

    I went 12.538 stock with a tune.

    Went back down to the track the following year on better tires, headers and catless and picked up 2/10ths.
    D/A was much higher the second trip down.

    Good points, I could see this being an issue for people with carbed setups running ignition systems that don't compensate for temperature. Unless they're tuning it in at the track chances are they're running timing for worse case scenario (e.g. hot weather) and are actually leaving power on the table when its cool without even realizing it in those vehicles. It becomes a lot more obvious in a modern car that automatically keeps the tune "proper."
    That said I'd hope that someone that's been into working on cars for decades would know that colder air is more power without an extensive explanation.

I was at first like DEUUUUMMMM DIS BITCH GETS TO 100 QUICK and then it dawned on me either everyone after that was doing 60 in a 45 or it broke a speedo fix 😭😭😭 that said, car never did fry the tires in first or second but with the tune and the supporting mods I have it now easily roasts them in said gears.

I will still tune , but I have gotten a good tuner that has a self adjusting tune, that compensates for all weather, elevation, and fuel types over a 25-30 mile period all on the drive. I will not do canned tunes that were don even in one area and the weather and elevation and fuel of that area half way across the county.

    Yes this an older post but I just want to add that any REAL veteran drag racer knows and knew about DA/weather long before computers controlled the tuning. For this old timer what the most frustrating thing is you cant tune the car real time. Unless you have a laptop(usually) and tuning software AND know how to use it...you stuck with the tune it is running. In the OLD DAYS you could mess with the timing and fuel(carburetor/distributer) anytime you wanted too. I just wish there was an easy way to get into the tuning of modern cars.

  • @joes.7536
    @joes.7536 Před 6 lety

    I run into this problem with my car. Although I'm smart enough to not blame anybody. I'm pretty much maxing out a turbocharged car with the stock turbo and stock intercooler. Running 11 psi more than stock with 93 only software. It runs like a raped ape in 50°f and colder weather pretty much back to back. But right now in Michigan with the highs possibly reaching 90°f on summer days. It gets heat soaked so fast. It's actually making more boost than it did in the winter and this down on power about 15%. But I know this is from my IAT's and I need to upgrade to a larger front mount intercooler. And even then I still could have issues because when you push a small turbo really hard it just creates a lot of heat. The 3" catless downpipe has helped some for under hood turbo temps. But he's right the bottom line is. A modern ECU will pull timing to avoid knock in hot humid weather it's just the reality of it. The higher the intake air temp the less power you can expect. Cold air is more dense. For us turbo guys that leads to a lot more power in cold weather and a lot less traction in cold weather ultimately. I can't wait till this fall so I can do 2nd gear burnouts on the highway Entrance Ramp again. Lol.

My question is" There is no chip in the ECU since I bought it and it runs like crap when the weather goes or pass the 50's (spring and summer) What can I do? Can the dealer re flash it? The car came with a Borla Touring's, it has Steeda CAI and BBK X pipes. Should I buy a tuner or buy a new ECU? What kind of boost loss can be expected on an 03 cobra with 2.3 tvs at 5000ft elevation? With a 2.8 and stock lower car is seeing 15-16 psi. Thanks

    Alex I need some advice. I’m ready to buy a supercharger kit for my 2012 gt but am completely undecided on which type or brand. If you were starting over on your old 11 gt , which one would you buy knowing what you know now.
    Thanks. The videos are great. Keep em coming.

      my car is an auto. I’ve been leaning toward a vmp because they come with a tune. My car has long tubes and a boss manifold so I’m afraid the tune that comes with a Paxton/Vortech /Procharger won’t work with my setup.

    @alejandro I have a 2002 ford lightning. I just replaced the motor with a new 5.4 2v long block from ford and rebuilt Eaton supercharger. Do you a custom tune I can use on a sct x4

    Nice explanation! Luckily I already had a general idea about air, elevation, temp affecting everything. So at the end when you were explaining being able to drive across the country on the same tune, I'm assuming that's where the knock sensors come in? We had our first *really* hot day yesterday (IAT was in the 130s) and my knock sensors were pulling a consistent 3* at anything over 50% throttle. Assuming that's the case and point to a certain degree of this video? Basically "Screw what you want to do, it's hot af i'm saving myself" :')

    Hey Alex,
    What's the typical power you get out of a fbo 2015 GT. I just ran at the track here in AZ and first time out went 13.1@109. Something in the tune seems off... Its tuned on e54 and put down 480/404 at local dyno 2 days prior. I'm really confused to the low MPH. Any help would be tremendous.
    Thanks Joe

    so pretty much if its summer time and you have your car tuned and its hot and inlet air temps are sensitive so temperatures then that bascally means sports cars are useless when its summer time?? makes sense because sports cars are made for TRACK USE ONLY... thats what they are purposely made for.... so pretty much to me it looks like if its summer time or spring then that means the car isnt going to run at its best. which in other words your going to be loosing horsepower and torque across the board because its going to be hot out and cars dont like hot air.
