  • I read a thread today on the r3w forum that made me decide to blow the cobwebs away on the gramophone. (One day, I really buy one of those modern wireless sets that use electricity). That said, about 30 winds of the handle is enough to play one 78. In this case it's a record that is about 90 years old - Are you from Dixie by The Elliots. This gramophone has two horns (must be posh) the horns are behind wooden slats at the front of the unit.
For volume control you open and shut the slats and for tone, you open and close the lid. As the unit is so loud, I have a pair of socks shoved in each horn, hence one of the believed origins of the expression "put a sock in it" comes from when someone is noisy. (The person's mouth being likend to a gramophone horn).
