She is a beauty. I have had a great many Reliant three-wheelers. My first was a Reliant with an Austin side-valve engine. I went on to a reliant with a 700 cc engine I then started getting Reliant Robins estate and van. I wish they still made them I would buy one. I loved them so much. Cheap to run, cheap to tax and insure. Like any car, it had its faults, the kingpins needed changing regularly, it was a bit scary sometimes on corners and I damaged a few knuckles working on the engine.

I had a 1968 regal saloon in a fawn colour. I had a brand new chassis i passed my bike test in nov 1986 and was naturally browsing through the free ads for a bigger bike when my father asked what i was doing to which replied just looking for a bigver bike he said your mother will never wear that your bags will be packed his suggestion was a reliant he also had a regal supervan 3 so he bought my regal for my 18th i had it a year then passed my driving test. In deep snow of 1986 it passed many 4 wheelers up hills in snow

Why did people buy this vehicle?

This vehicle only exists because of the stupid driving licence laws. You can drive a three wheeler if you have a full motorcycle license, but not a four wheel car, that would be too difficult for a motorcycle rider.

I knew an old boy in Whitley Bay who had a similar Regal to this in his garden that did nothing for years. He reckoned the longer it sat there, it would become a collector's item, even if his wife said it was a total eyesore sitting in their nice suburban garden. I wonder if they ever did get round to doing up the Regal and selling it for a few thousand, as the old boy was always out to make money.

The “factory“ is a disorganised worn-out nightmare, a wonder anything was actually produced there. Reminds me of a Soviet plant. Ford were lightyears ahead of them. A marvel they were able to survive for a few more years.
