I'm 71 and I have had tinnitus since 1974. it has grown worse over the years. In my case, it's a very high pitch in both ears. It is very loud. My ears have become very sensitive to abrupt sounds, but I don't let it get me down. I ignore it the best I can, but that is requiring a lot of determination these days. It sometimes gets to me and I languish for a while wishing the ringing would stop, trying to imagine what silence is like. The funny thing is that I have played harmonica since I was ten and still love to play. I still have good pitch, too. I usually avoid watching videos on tinnitus because they end up offering fake cures that require a subscription, etc. This is the first time I see something that makes sense (I am a retired DC). I hope they succeed in finding a treatment plan soon.

One of my earliest memories is of my telling my Mum that I had a noise in my ears. She said, "Oh; everyone has that!', and told me not to worry. So I didn't, and hearing it hasn't bothered me at all for the last 75/76 years! (Edit to add) I spent 23 years working in an engine laboratory, where I had tests carried out on my ears, to the highest standards, twice a year. I would enter the soundproof cell, where the only sound I could hear was the tinnitus, until the test started, when, at very low levels, sounds very similar to the sound of the tinnitus were played through the headphones. The sounds were so quiet that I found that unless I breathed through my wide-open moth, the noise of my breath would drown them. Despite this, my hearing was always found to be the most sensitive of any in the laboratory.

      Jack Attack,
I agree! You've said what I try to convey to people, that this is a PERCEPTION problem. Generally, those who suffer the most from it are people who are obsessively focusing on it, listening for the sounds, and that is what causes it, or at least worsens it to a great extent. Find distractions, stay busy with things that you enjoy, things you love.
In the beginning weeks and months I was regularly upset about it. I was mad, sad, and worried about it. I did research about nutritional supplements, saw all the doctors, had hearing checked out, had hormone levels checked (my tinnitus is related to hormone imbalance and menopause).
But as time went on I got pissed off enough that I decided to take my normal life back, and slowly over the following months, I got it back. I've come to see that for most people, it is related to IMBALANCE in all areas of my life; and to poor sleep, too much stress and worry, and to feeling depressed, angry, or sad too often.
When I started to have that understanding, when I went to bed and heard it, I was like "Meh, big deal, f- off" and just kept happy thoughts in the forefront of my mind, thought of scenes from my favorite movies, or my cats little furry faces, or the faces of people I loved, or some comedy sketches that always make me laugh, and I let myself be soothed by these positive thought-distractions. Then I dropped off to sleep more easily. It's been easier and easier since then. :)

      George Kehaya,
Yeah, I agree with you. Barbara Steisand and Steve Martin have also had it. It has not dampened their success or enjoyment of life either. I think one of the problems is when people feel it as a bad thing, as a punishment, or a sickness, etc, when it doesn't have to feel that way at all. In most cases (yes, I know there are exceptions), but for most people there is NOTHING WRONG in their body. There is NO problem. It is an offshoot of anxiety or stress, or anger, and general imbalance in a person's life.
They have to approach the curing of it or the managing of it from many angles:
      Massage Therapy
      Cranio Sacral Adjustments
Overall stress-management in one's life, which could mean changes to relationships and jobs or careers
SLEEP, getting better sleep, more sleep, including sleep positioning (some peoples' tinnitus is actually caused by using the wrong pillow!)
Some dietary changes ; it couldn't hurt to cut way back on processed foods, sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, smoking
EXERCISE, not necessarily more, but better exercise, more relaxing (swimming, yoga, bike riding)
It's when people keep their lifestyle basically the same, with little or no change, and stay in horrible jobs, relationships, get horrible sleep, take too many medications, smoke, drink, eat fast foods, watch too much TV, sit too much in front of the computer, don't get outside for fresh air or enough exercise that they then complain that tinnitus is wrecking their life. Maybe it is not the tinnitus doing it, but the fact that they are not approaching overall lifestyle changes to improve their quality of life.

George Kehaya it's weird isn't it. People take their peaceful silence for granted. I've had it for five years, I tune it out and have listened to a lot of binaurals, Hypnotic videos etc. I'm so used to it that even when it gets louder I just lie there hearing it and eventually fall asleep. Safe to say listening to all the material I have helps a lot. They have a few tinnitus sufferers hypnotics to listen to. Always get those.. they are in app form as well. Since it is a "hallucination" it makes sense hypnosis would be the best way to go.. that and acupuncture.

I was 9 months pregnant when I woke up on my 30th birthday with tinnitus and Bell's Palsy. My doctor said that he'd never seen anyone with that disorder that late in pregnancy. I wasn't permitted to take time off without pay from my 2nd grade teaching position, so I had to teach 30 seven-year-olds after having sleep interruptions to get up and feed my newborn. The students were so loud during the day that the sounds were camouflaged, but I never experienced quiet over the two years I dealt with it. I heard whistling, someone blowing in my ear, geese honking, and other sounds and it was driving me mad, but when I was pregnant with my second baby and caught a bad head cold, the sounds slowly went away as I recovered from the virus. I am now 73 and it never came back. I have so much empathy for those who are suffering with it because I completely understand how life-changing it is. The only thing that kept me from considering suicide was my little baby. I truly wish they would find something that could help (other than listening to the static between radio stations--what I was told to listen to so I could fall asleep).

Together with I have started to ignore titanius sound , similarly like our heart beats , clock do tick tick , If we learn to ignore together with medicine and deep sleep for 8 hour with little physical walk or exercise 2 months . Titinus will get remove . In case this sound has still disturbing you , try to listen to few nice mantra like ganesh chalisa , gayatri mantra , hanuman chalisa before sleeping for 30 min or more . So that your subconscious mind forgot about the titinus sound and start absorbing sound of good vibrational mantra . All together if anyone follow this they can get rid of titinus within 2 month also. I was not not knowing the solution , so it took more time . Never loose hope . I can hear people just fine when they face me when they're talking, but if they're some distance away, speaking more quietly or not facing me I can always hear that they are talking, but it often makes it difficult to clearly hear their words. And, when I'm in a more noisy environment, like a restaurant, it just seems to get louder and complicate conversations. It's really hard to explain this to the people who are closest to me because they think I'm losing my hearing and keep pushing me to get hearing aids, but they don't understand it's not that I can't hear, it's that I constantly hear something I don't want to hear that makes it harder to hear the things I really want to hear. Background noise is the worst when it comes to understanding people talking. As you mentioned, background chatter in a place like a restaurant is bad, I personally also have problems with running water. If someone is running water in a sink and talks to me it just sounds like incomprehensible garble. I started suffering from tinnitus in my early 30's. At first, strangely, I just had bouts of it and it was intermittent. Now it is constant, and for me it sounds like the first sound sample in this video, except higher pitched. The best way I can explain it is if you turn in a tv or computer monitor with no signal and you hear a high pitched hum.

Tinnitus correlates with stress and depression?!... with the limbic system?! Even as a nursing student at the time this video was posted, tinnitus has always been explained to me as "idiopathic." This means the cause and physiological processes are unknown. Thank you for this information and the opportunity to understand my tinnitus.

When I first noticed my tinnitus, in 2010, I felt panic/claustrophobia/anxiety and also grief for the silence I will most likely never know again. But now, although the tinnitus is still here, in both ears, ALL the time (the steady high-pitched tone) I pay no attention to it and I mostly forget it's there. sounds bad man i too hope they find a cure. i dont really know what caused my T, it just started. may actually have been my friends dog barking. i hope not, because that will mean it was noice induced. my ear was also ear wax blocked at the time, so im very hopeful that was the cause, so there is a reasonable chance it will pass. if it was the earwax, then it should pass between 6weeks to 3 months. could of course vary. im on week 5 now, and i have felt minor reductions and many changes along the way. frequency, intensity, volume all change constantly. but it hasnt become completely quiet yet. i actually wish Bill Gates would get T, so he would invest billions in a cure. think he would probabily use 40 billion if he had to (out of about 80 billion), know i would.

    • @Grays_Plays
      @Grays_Plays Před 7 lety +45

Hi there. I'm just writing because my tinnitus is a lot like yours. It came out of nowhere with no noise induced cause, and it also varies a lot. The sound can change, the intensity, the volume, even the pitch. I have however, drastically reduced my tinnitus from almost suicidal levels that I was suffering only a few months ago, and it's at the point now where, though it still varies, when it is at it's quietest, I barely notice it at all through the day, and it's quiet enough at night that it doesn't bother me at all during sleep. When it's at it's loudest, it only just barely irritates me, because I know that it will be quieter before long, and that over time, it will get even quieter.
My tinnitus seems to be following a pattern of spike, drop, spike a little less loud, then drop even lower than the previous low, and I am certain that one day I will have silence again. It may take years, but the fact that it can be improved at all has taken away the fear this ailment had paralysed me with.
My advice to anyone reading this comment is to check out Julian Cowan Hill's videos on tinnitus, or even check out mine to hear my experience, (but you're better off checking out Julian's.) Tinnitus doesn't have a "Cure", in the sense that there is no pill or surgery for it, and in my opinion there never will be a cure like that because tinnitus is fundamentally a dysfunction of the nervous system, and that's affected by everything from your thoughts and feelings, to everything you perceive going on in your environment, big and small. No amount of money or research will ever fix the fact that, in my opinion at least, doctors are looking at it the wrong way. Tinnitus can however be eliminated, or at the very least reduced, so please check out Julian's channel.
Anyway, sorry for the massive wall of text, but I really have improved my tinnitus and gotten my life back, and I desperately want to share that with other sufferers, because I was almost getting to the point where if I didn't have people in my life that would of been affected by my passing, I would of wished for death, and no one should have to go through with that, not when the problem is actually quite a simple one, though by no means is tinnitus 'easy' to cure.
Thank you for reading, and I really hope this helps.

hey man, thanks for reply. hope i dont have it for months or years. its not very loud at the moment, usually loudest in the morning, and then gets lower after a shower. i think mine was induced by a combination of stress/depression and earwax blockage. hopefully, it was only the earwax. i also have had a stuffed nose for the entire duration of this, so hopefully, when summer comes the stuffed nose will go away, and parhaps the tinnitus. mine is very wierd. it went from a low ringing, to a loud one, then changed pitch, then it was like 3 or 4 sounds at the same time. one ringing, one hissing, one that sounds like someone scraping their nails on a board, and one sounding like a angle grinder that is not in contact with anything, just turned on, and turned off, but still spinning down. now its mostly just the angle grinder. i also have this very wierd thing going on randomly in my ear. i can feel it, like something is happening. its like someone is pulling a trigger, a flesh trigger per se, and i can hear it a little. a couple of weeks ago it happened like 30 times in a row, and the sound was gone. then it sneaked back, so im sure its some form of body function trying to cure me. hope it is. anyways, it it is earwax cause/cold and stuffed nose, im hopeful it will pass within a couple of months. but this fking symptom can last however long it feels like.... imma check out the julian video, see if it helps. ty man. hope yours go away too.

      Trolleylol,
Have you had your hearing checked, and blood tests and all that, to rule out certain causes? Did you see an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor? Another thing is lots of people have tinnitus from neck and shoulder problems. When they get physical therapy and massage from a highly skilled practitioner (don't just go to some bozo, in other words), their tinnitus lessens or goes away altogether.

    • @f.b.8254
      @f.b.8254 Před 7 lety +2

      Gray,
That's fantastic! This is encouraging to read. I also see it as a kind of "perception" problem; problematic to people because of how they perceive it. If they perceive it with dread or anger or annoyance it is a problem, but if they are curious about it, unbothered by it like a monk resting in meditation, it ceases to be a problem. So it increases in direct relation to the degree that it's perceived as something bad, that has to be resisted.
One of the many "tools" I have devised for myself is reminding myself that my body knows what it is doing; I will say that to myself: "trust the body, the body is not an idiot, it knows what it is doing, it is just trying to find balance."
Everyone has to find their own way to feeling better, but I'm so glad when people like you share your positive outlook and experience.

So that your subconscious mind forgot about the titinus sound and start absorbing sound of good vibrational mantra . If a person is speaking to me quietly and not enunciating their words; it just sounds like a mumble. I have found that in group settings, I tend to not engage in the conversation much anymore. sebaswildboy like a voice in your head, it won’t go away if you actively want it to. However, also like the voice in your head, there are times when
you are distracted enough that you forget about it, and it essentially is not there anymore. Technically it probably is, but, if you don’t notice it, it may as well not be. If your reaction to your tinnitus is negative, it will obviously become more of an issue, like when you scratch a mosquito bite, your immune system creates a reaction, well your emotions are similar. If you can find a way to not react, and don’t try not to hear it, but to simply observe its presence, and then continue to observe other sensations and sounds both inside and out. It will then become simply another sensation which you are accustomed to. I can’t guarantee this will work, but keep an open mind and you might just have a breakthrough. The key is, don’t try too hard, just let whatever happens happen.

I also found through testing that I have multiple autoimmune disorders and I also think tinnitus is a big factor on problems with insomnia, which creates a vicious cycle.

Please see a doctor before taking the vitamins, also counseling ........but please keep looking for answers they are out there.....you must believe. One last thing sleeping on your back with a pillow designed for sleeping on your back and side, with your head slightly elevated with a fan running or a sound machine helps to sleep at night....you could take the magnesium an hour or two before bed time to help relax the central nervous system. Then i took proponol medicine as suggested by doctor for getting relief from anxiety and stress for 3 week . Slowly it took 1 year to get rid of titanius . There is nothing one can do for it to go away. Also, I think it has to do with genes for some people to experience it more than others. My grandmother had tinnitus. Noise cancellation helps some, but I am not ready for that yet. But I admit, tinnitus drives you mad... at times it feels as running engines oven metal tracks, and an entire forest with cicadas and crickets. THE SECRECT IS TO WORK; STUDY; WORKOUT; RUN; DATE; LIVE UR LIFE and then suddenly u realize, days have passed by and the Tinnitus were always there but u simply forgot it. its like the silence´s sound and period, no more thoughts. no negativity, no depression.
I am still learning to deal with it when it sunddely gets worse for no reason apparently some few times, when it happens i usually just breath calmly and wait, in 1 to 2 min it gets mild again. Another thing i am still learning is to sleep without any sound. No fan, No aircondictioner, no whitesound. Anyway, i ve learned already that time helps you. GIve time to u, be patient, and i guarantee u, u will live HAPPY again.

Realmente quanto mais você tenta prestar atenção no som, mais alto e agoniante ele fica. @@vicm3129 I've had Tinnitus with no hearing loss going on 2 months now, which I believe was noise induced. At first it shook me and I cried a couple times at night on the same week knowing that I'd possibly never hear silence again.. 2 months down the line its a bit more manageable. I feel getting good uninterrupted sleep and keeping hydrated helps set me up for a good day with it, It's still there but not as noticeable, these are the days I'm grateful for. I still get bad days where the ringing pokes through most sounds and its hard to ignore, I just push on and drink plenty of water and try mask it with some music or white noise. My T is very high pitched a lot of sounds don't really mask it, I use a sleep therapy app that I can adjust the EQ and raise certain frequencies and connect it to speakers that go in my pillow, this has been pretty successful to help me doze off to sleep and feel that I'm also getting better quality sleep.
In short- Good sleep, good hydration, try to remain positive, working out to release any stressful energy.
Tools I use- Sound therapy bluetooth speaker for during the day for background noise, sleep pillow speakers (I really do recommend)
Best of luck to everyone suffering. Hopefully one day its a thing of the past!

Roaring, High pitch ringing, humming, whistling, you name it and that’s what I hear. At times it’s loud enough it feels like my head is physically vibrating but even at this level you can get used to it and live your life. My advice is get on with your life and don’t dwell on the past. Protect your ears but only when necessary, over protecting makes things worse. Stay away from google and forums and work on diet, meditation, and positivity. This truly is the key to the tinnitus backing out of your awareness. I would also recommend watching Julian Cowan hills videos, even watching his videos has calmed my tinnitus down at times and while I still have tinnitus I believe his advice is solid and can help at least back your tinnitus off if you remain positive about it. As far as stress being a strong component in tinnitus here is a little proof from my own experience. I was mostly habituated to my tinnitus and getting on with life until the birth of my first child recently, an awesome experience but also very stressful and emotional. Sure enough I was thrust back into the vicious loop of tinnitus and now it’s bothering me again but with the right mindset it’s slowly settling. Tinnitus is a mental game but with the right Mindset it’s one you can win! Stay strong people!

Anyhow few years ago it got so bad I couldn't stand it, acupuncture and neck - head massage helped me a lot but I realised stress brought it on for me. I started to go to bed early and aim for 6-8h sleep and reduce stress levels. After about a couple of months, I managed to bring it back down to "my normal"

Not all tinnitus are equal tho. while for some people it's a nuisance but something that they can live with, for others it's incapacitating and they aren't able to live a normal live anymore.
Myself I've been on both sides. for many years my tinnitus was very annoying but I could live with it and go on with my life. but then the sound became a lot louder and it's absolutely debilitating. I'm not able to work anymore (At least not productively. i'm a programmer and it's difficult to do my job with tinnitus hindering my ability to focus and think). I'm constantly sleep deprived because my tinnitus is so loud it constantly wake me up. I can only sleep in short bursts.
It's just like with pain...there are pain that are bearable even if it lower your overall quality of life. but some are excruciating and an absolute torture you could never get accustomed to. only difference is that with pain even in the worst cases there are meds that can give relief even if briefly. for tinnitus there is no escape...when you just can't stand it anymore, when you are at your absolute limit, there is nothing you can do about it. there is no relief even for a moment. it's there and it will continue to be there eroding your sanity a little more with every second that pass. this is why many people with severe tinnitus end up committing suicide. It's an horrible condition that is very misunderstood.

My tinnitus was caused by a loud explosion. There was also some hearing loss. It was still there after 8 years (and still VERY annoying). I was told by a top neurologist it would never go away (having had it that long). But during that time I had made significant changes to my diet and lifestyle habits, and after ten years it was gone. I was tested to verify that it was actually gone (and not just my imagination). It was, and my hearing loss had improved. So when tinnitus is caused by acoustic trauma to the ear, the body can heal it, it just needs the resources (and it must first finish dealing with more serious issues that you may not even be aware of, then it can turn its attention to something like tinnitus). So, yes, for some types of tinnitus, there is a cure.

Eating and living in a healthy way can allow the body to heal it. But the body will work on the more serious things first... things you may not even be aware of. And then it will turn its attention to the non-serious things like tinnitus. So it won't happen overnight, but it could happen.

I’m afraid we’ll be too old for the help by the time it is perfected. I pray they work as fast as is possible in order to get help to all of us suffering now.

I have tinnitus that sounds like crickets and try to just live with it and image I'm in a forest listening to that sound! This is somewhat comforting.

This gives hope. Tinnitus is not a pleasant thing at all, but with enough understanding of the phenomenon and support from specialists, one can live quite well with it.

I have never read comments on the internet that made me feel so comforted. Tinnitus is such a horrendous thing to deal with especially the first year. It is worse than any pain ive ever had. Good luck everyone 😪
