I can see by the negative comments that model railroad enthusiasts are resistant to change, especially if it has anything to do with a Bachmann product. Model railroading is supposed to be relaxing and fun, so all you that are sending negativity from your ivory towers, open your eyes and mind. This is the best way to encourage others to carry on the greatest hobby in the world. AND NO, I'm not a spokesman for Bachman. With that said, I will share with you my experience with this wonderful new technology: I have a Bachmann EZ app loco that I took the controller board and installed it in an old Atlas DC loco. It works flawlessly slow speeds are steady with no jerking. Set up is just as easy as connecting the bluetooth, as opposed to a DCC command controller that can take up to 20 minutes just to get the train to roll. I experimented with other companies like BlueRail and Monocacy Trains. They both offer controller boards that will fit in almost all locomotives easily. Personally I went one step further and use 12V LiPo battery cells to power the train. My track has no power and no worries about switching shorts, return loops or dirty track. This system will improve and quite possibly be the biggest improvement in model railroading. Anyone that has questions or would like to know more please feel free to contact me. After all we are here to have fun, share ideas and most of all our knowledge.
I'm going to both Mostly defend and slightly criticize your comment. Criticism: while I did see some negative comments, I think most were just stating that the EZ app was just not their cup of tea. Nothing wrong with that, I know a couple folks that wont give DCC the time of day, just want to model the old school way. Defend: I agree that the app has promise and you should try not to be closed off right away. At least give it a try first. Like you said, this is supposed to be fun. I will quote the great Bobo Ross "If your not having fun, then your doing the wrong thing". My personal take: I have not tried this yet, saw it at the store and thought I would look at some videos. Its a mixed bag for me. I think I like DCC better for my uses, but I could see how it might appeal to some people, especially those that do everything from their phone or tablet. If you can install the app on multiple devices you could easily get others involved in the fun. Also, things change, some of the failings the tech has today could go away in the near future. As I'm typing this in 2021, they may already have gone away. Looks like the app is free, I plan to drop $100 on a loco and give it a try.
It would be cool if the app included controls that where the same as a real train. It wouldn't even be that hard, they would just need to patch the app!
If you are trying to get the loco to crawl at speed step 1 (from a stop) you tap your thumb once above the green throttle knob which increments the speed by 1 (out of 100). Double taps take you up (or down) by 5. In this video, when a "crawl" was being demonstrated, the slider was manually slid up higher than 1. Use "tap above/below" for more precise control.
I've been excited to see the EZ App in action since I first heard about it. I'm not fortunate enough to have a layout with DCC so this looks like a nice alternative.
I don't care for the idea unless you can combine multiple engines together. The sound is no problem by adding bluetooth capable speakers around the layout. Still have to wait on this one because its new and will have to work out bugs to get it right.
A consisting feature has now been release to run multiple engines. It is very easy to set up. Check out the Bluerail web site which demonstrates this feature.
I am a young model railroader and I would much rather hear the sounds from my locomotive than from my phone. THAT BEING SAID, I'd love to control my DCC locos with an app!
Next generation bluerail board will have sound. If you want sound to come from the train now, get one of these and put it in a car behind the locomotive. Works great, better quality sound than most DCC locos. smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0723HQLMN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I haven't read all the comments, but for $10 you can transfer the sounds to the locomotive using a Groove Cube Bluetooth speaker. The speaker is an approx. 1" cube which nicely fits into wide-bodied locomotives, if you have the space.
Nice review! For being the first company to do this ( finally! ) and their first run of products, I think they did a good job. I would have liked to see these in a consist. There are many issues though with this, and lack of DC/DCC operation is a big one. Clearly they are using a simple bluetooth motor controller which can be bought on ebay actually. Deciding to have the app for only IOS devices is quite restrictive, and also means one cannot go buy a cheap $50 android tablet to use as a controller. I am sure Android is next, followed by Windows app. A Windows app would open up a whole new world of control in general for a layout, not just locomotives ( I'll explain towards the end of the comment ). Problem too with this is, unless there is a universal standard adopted that all manufacturers use, they will only work with their respective apps. So in other words, bachmann can only run with bachmann, can't use future bluetooth enabled locomotives from other manufacturers with the same app because they will all choose to have their own app and way of communicating/controlling the locomotive. Bluetooth controlled crossings, switches, lighting, whatever on a layout would be really awesome, and can be done right now actually with the bluetooth controllers that exist for other things. As far as sound from the tablet / phone / computer, probably will be better in some ways, better and more accurate sound which could also be customized too at some point down the road.
Phantom197 Works on DCC track because the track has power all the time, DC power would have to be on full all the time, and this does not work with DCC controllers, has to have an app with bluetooth device to work at all.
I read somewhere that the company which developed this Bluetooth app and decoder/receiver for Bachmann will also release decoder/receiver boards for installation in other locomotives not just Bachmann. I can't recall the company name right off, I recall their having a website, a Google search may find it.
I personally think that these locomotives are really great and looking at the details, Bachmann put just a tad bit more effort to these units than what's on the normal engines. I personally like Bachmann for the most part and enjoy the models they make. this is a nice unit and thanks for reviewing. one Will soon be part of my collection once I find the right one on eBay. great work!!!
This can be used with a Bluetooth speaker. There are plenty of small Bluetooth speakers selling for around $15.00 that can be put in a box or stock car. You can put larger speakers under the table. Good app and good running engine.
Nice, I like that you went through all the nice features. Hey keep these things coming. Good to keep up on the new things and this has great potential for people with limited budgets, to get sound and wireless control, from a standard DC power supply. Thanks for doing the video.
The idea of the sound coming from the phone or iPod is kind of interesting, since I've been looking at doing a headphone setup like Lance Mindheim blogged about a while back. Most of the time I am running trains at night when some of the family is already sleeping, and so I need to keep the sound off anyway. This would be an interesting option to have for running at night with a pair of headphones connected to my iPhone. I would definitely like other road names and engine types or be able to pick up the bluetooth receivers to install on other locomotives. It would be really cool to be able to switch the sound back and forth from the locomotive to the phone whenever you wanted.
Hey James later this year big changes coming to bbrock Railfan. I am planning on buying a regular camera, tripod and wireless microphone. So, I too will make an attempt to do some reviews mainly n-scale. So far, I have just been using my iPhone camera but haven't done any voice overs. Good briefly saying hello to jlwii2000 at the Indianapolis show. Keep up the excellent product reviews.
I have two reservations about the system. #1. That the sound doesn't come out of the locomotive, bummer. #2. That they do not run with a DCC system, bummer. However, with the EZ app system, for those who care to ever run any loco without track power, he is your chance to do so! All you have to do is install internal batteries inside of the loco (or a boxcar attached to the loco), and you should be able to run these using the app. The biggest obstacle is, trying to fit what should be about 16VDC worth of batteries inside. If you can, then these should run without using track power, no more dirty track worries.
Put a Bluetooth speaker in say a box car and not so bad. Smart Matketing getting a new audience of younger people into the hobby. DCC is versatile but is daunting to many new to the hobby.
It will appeal to new modellers that do not have a lot invested in DCC. As understand it you can use a steady DC source such as an old train power pack turned up all the way and the app and you are all set. When I saw it demonstrated by Bachmann they used a Bluetooth speaker for the sounds.
I feel a Model Railroad fan should just judge each product individually not by what company built it. I don't have any MTH locomotives but when I was at the Indianapolis show I was impressed with what I saw.
Try to get your hands on the ez app new mogul when you can. They are shipping in october. Also you should use the bluerail trains app instead. It offers a lot more options like more sounds (3 different whistles and 3 different bells)
Thanks for the video (by the way). It would have also been nice to take a look at the settings options (cog), extra sound panel (up to the right) and "multi-train" control screens when showing the app. We only saw the home screen and one of the single train control screens in this demo.
For the price I just don't see the draw of this system. It's just better, in virtually every way, to go with an NMRA compatable DCC system. That way you're not locked into one manufacturer. And if you love and have to have Bachmann you can still run Bachmann as they make full lines of DCC and DCC-Ready locomotives. I'm sure getting texts and phone calls (if you use a phone for this) isn't exactly convenient.
I will wait for the ez command smart interface. It seems more useful and is what they should have brought out. Control any dcc locomotive with your smart device. The bachmann rep said in Model railroader magazines Trainfest report video that it would be out within a month of Trainfest but I guess that's been pushed back. In fact the video has been removed from model railroader and CZcams. :( I think the wifi interface actually shows more promise than Bluetooth.
EZ app trains do not run on DC/ DCC and with the constant power to the tracks DC Locomotives start rolling as soon as you set them on the tracks (I've done it so I know what I'm talking about) and if your an ANDROID user Google Play has the EZ app
ok, so i am just getting back into this hobby. havent touched trains in like 20 years... so i just ordered a Kato Ge C44-9w so how or what kind of control system do i need to control the sounds on it since i just have dc? new controller or lol i feel kinda lost now.
so your saying there is no power to the track and it comes from the app please explain thanks i thouhgt i heard you say that you had no dcc or dc going to the track
happy new year james , just keep them reviews coming ,, I for one love them ,, this app only does bachman ?????,, so sounds like a layout can get complicated with many brands on the layout , good try by bachman though and WHO is 100 feet from a loco to operate it , really that not a good feature unless your neighbour has a layout ,, ha ha , but to go only bachman now ,, I have to much invested in others ,so this tells me to stay away from bachman really ,, don't work with dcc , only their app , not a good investment , unless you are just starting out , and only go bachman , , but again thanks for the review
My Android 6.0.1 smart phone with Bluetooth 4.0 recognizes the loco in the Bluetooth menu and says paired. But the loco does not show up in EZ App. Bachmann could not help. Any ideas?
This would have been a great device except for the sound coming from the phone... Instead of the actual engine... What a disappointment... I'm going to stick with my DCC where the engine sounds come from the engines
This must also be exclusive to apple products. I looked on the android Play store and the ez app is not there. Great review but don't think it is for me. Will
This review was not done well because key aspects were omitted. You indicated that the sound had to come from the Apple device. Certainly this is the default but you can link to any Bluetooth speaker. I have just purchased a 27mm cube Bluetooth speaker for $6 to fit into a boxcar behind my loco. The review needs to be re-done.
+jlwii2000 Thanks for that.....you still missed out the extra sounds button although you did open it by accident at one stage. Being a reviewer must be difficult due to the need to fully research the subject and then plan the review on paper so that nothing gets left out.
You can buy the plug in boards from Bluerail Trains who manufacture the computer boards in the Bachmann units & put them into another manufactures train if you are so down on Bachmann.
Really? $200 For a locomotive that doesn't have its own sound. I'm glad I watched your video before I bought it. I would rather have the sound coming from the locomotive instead of the app.
We ran them both last night successfully. You can also run 2 EZ-App engines on separate Phones. Meaning that one phone can run one EZ-AppEngine and another phone can run the other.
I think it's great, but I really really dislike that the sound comes from the phone. Doesn't make since, and is much more prototypical from the loco obviously.
I can see by the negative comments that model railroad enthusiasts are resistant to change, especially if it has anything to do with a Bachmann product. @@devastatorsworld6148 my problem with the app is why Bachman didn’t put the decoder in more of there loco. They will make more money

This system is made I believe by bluetrains this system works great with G scale because you can put a Bluetooth speaker inside the engine.
You can purchase a blue tooth wireless speaker ($10.00) and place into a box or stock car and the sounds of the train will come through that speaker
I haven't read all the comments, but for $10 you can transfer the sounds to the locomotive using a Groove Cube Bluetooth speaker. The speaker is an approx. 1" cube which nicely fits into wide-bodied locomotives, if you have the space.

talked to trainworld about 2 weeks ago and they will not run on DCC and that sucks but to get the younger modelers this will be a big help

I would like to see this have the sound come from the loco, or at least give us the choice. Otherwise great idea!
First of all ! Happy New Year James and thanks for sharing and keep up the great work... Lance 🚂
Hey James later this year big changes coming to bbrock Railfan. I am planning on buying a regular camera, tripod and wireless microphone. Very realistic putting that single rail in the 10 foot there.
I feel a Model Railroad fan should just judge each product individually not by what company built it. I don't have any MTH locomotives but when I was at the Indianapolis show I was impressed with what I saw.
I have the Scout Special from Bachmann with EZ app and it also works with Android phones
great video and review brother :) happy new year to you as well huge fan of the channel.
Try to get your hands on the ez app new mogul when you can. They are shipping in october. Also you should use the bluerail trains app instead. It offers a lot more options like more sounds (3 different whistles and 3 different bells)
Please do a review of the new Bachman American style loco's with dcc sound. Like the Jupiter.
+CharlesRailfan22 i take it you're talking about the new retooled 4-4-0 americans?
TheBrantfordRailfan Yes I am.
yes, please do this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Is that multitrain function a way to MU the engines together? Nice new logo by the way :)
Hehe, E-Z App sure is cool! I bought the BNSF GP35 for my layout, and it runs great.
also good idea for the 360 degree view of the locomotives
What happens when your phone dies while your running a train at full speed?
I have one simple question. Can you still run the locomotive on then regular DC or DCC controller?
Thanks for the video (by the way). It would have also been nice to take a look at the settings options (cog), extra sound panel (up to the right) and "multi-train" control screens when showing the app. We only saw the home screen and one of the single train control screens in this demo.
Good news multi-train controls was added
Thanks again for a good honest review. Basic but easy as can be.
Does it work under DC power with the app? I sidn' understand. only checking did you have the power pack on? Great vid. and thank you for shopping it.
If you get a complete set it comes with EZ track and a switched power cord you connect to the terminal rerailer and have fun
Couldn’t you just use a Bluetooth speaker to divert sound from your device and hide it on the layout?
Pretty neat, like most things, def has its pros and cons
For the price I just don't see the draw of this system. It's just better, in virtually every way, to go with an NMRA compatable DCC system. That way you're not locked into one manufacturer. And if you love and have to have Bachmann you can still run Bachmann as they make full lines of DCC and DCC-Ready locomotives. I'm sure getting texts and phone calls (if you use a phone for this) isn't exactly convenient.
nice video I don't like how the phone makes the sound but besdes that i like the product I think it has lots of potential
Can you use more than 1 locomotive on the app including the Thomas & friends Bachmann locomotives?
360 view is nice, but I think it needs a bit more light. Kind of hard to see details on dark locomotives with low light.
nice 360 review! you do own a turntable though, you could just use that?
I bought my son a loc that is set up for blue tooth only an we have a dc set up an there's a time delay then the loc will up an run I noticed.
What are you using for rail power DC or DCC? Or does it mater?
Thanks James,
Really like the 360 view.
EZ app trains do not run on DC/ DCC and with the constant power to the tracks DC Locomotives start rolling as soon as you set them on the tracks (I've done it so I know what I'm talking about) and if your an ANDROID user Google Play has the EZ app
looks good would the app work on a computer because I don't have an I PHONE ?
What was the first train called? Model and all.
does it only run on a iPhone not the controller because i am getting one? thats cool!
Nice informal video for 2016 James....ignor the others....thats just their opinion
ok, so i am just getting back into this hobby. havent touched trains in like 20 years... so i just ordered a Kato Ge C44-9w so how or what kind of control system do i need to control the sounds on it since i just have dc? new controller or lol i feel kinda lost now.
so your saying there is no power to the track and it comes from the app please explain thanks i thouhgt i heard you say that you had no dcc or dc going to the track
He was trying to run it without the phone. You still have to have power to the track weather it is DCC or DC.
Can EZ App be used on any Bachmann train?
Only those Bachmann sets and Locomotives with the ez app symbol on the package
I forgot get a motorized 360 turntable. That will help in presenting a product. Still good job.
not bad but not sure I would buy one,its different that's for sure. and Happy New Year
Awesome review!
are you going to do a video on the new bachmann 4-4-0s?
I like the new logo!
happy new year james , just keep them reviews coming ,, I for one love them ,, this app only does bachman ?????,, so sounds like a layout can get complicated with many brands on the layout , good try by bachman though and WHO is 100 feet from a loco to operate it , really that not a good feature unless your neighbour has a layout ,, ha ha , but to go only bachman now ,, I have to much invested in others ,so this tells me to stay away from bachman really ,, don't work with dcc , only their app , not a good investment , unless you are just starting out , and only go bachman , , but again thanks for the review
how many limit address locomotives running from BACHMANN EZ can throttle them same time?
James when are you going to use mth Wi-Fi tiu?
My Android 6.0.1 smart phone with Bluetooth 4.0 recognizes the loco in
the Bluetooth menu and says paired. But the loco does not show up in EZ
App. Bachmann could not help. Any ideas?
does the app work for the older models?
congrats 28000 subs
Do you need to power up the train track
What about running the locomotives in tandem? (consisting)
Do they make it in a CP or a CN sceme?
hold on
is it app-powered or bluetooth? you've said both so i'm confused. I assume its App-controlled
+jabber1990 App controlled through bluetooth. The app basically sends the command via bluetooth.
Is it only bachmann or for anytht
This would have been a great device except for the sound coming from the phone... Instead of the actual engine... What a disappointment... I'm going to stick with my DCC where the engine sounds come from the engines
Would my Penn work it's from a set
This must also be exclusive to apple products. I looked on the android Play store and the ez app is not there. Great review but don't think it is for me.
Will
Google play has the app
nice train video
you hair is great thanks for the vid what matter is whats in the head :) ha thanks again keep on modelrailroading
Does this app work for any bachman train
I think they were thinking of kids when they came up with that idea.
VOLUME IS LOW... CAN YOU ADJUST THE MIC. PICK UP...
This review was not done well because key aspects were omitted. You didn't show how multiple locos can be run at the same time, precise speed control by screen tapping, the control settings options nor the extra sounds like brake squeal. You indicated that the sound had to come from the Apple device. Certainly this is the default but you can link to any Bluetooth speaker. I have just purchased a 27mm cube Bluetooth speaker for $6 to fit into a boxcar behind my loco. The review needs to be re-done.
I added a second video explaining more if you look at my video library.
+jlwii2000 Thanks for that.....you still missed out the extra sounds button although you did open it by accident at one stage. Being a reviewer must be difficult due to the need to fully research the subject and then plan the review on paper so that nothing gets left out.
+Peter Lucas so make your own damn review or shut the hell up
Peter Lucas shut the fuck up, it's Bachmann so we know it's going to be a piece of shit no matter what the review contains.
You can buy the plug in boards from Bluerail Trains who manufacture the computer boards in the Bachmann units & put them into another manufactures train if you are so down on Bachmann.
This looks like it simplifies wire for those of us electricity challenged
Really? $200 For a locomotive that doesn't have its own sound. I'm glad I watched your video before I bought it. I would rather have the sound coming from the locomotive instead of the app.
can you run a raguler dcc locomotive on the same track
At the same time you are running an EZ App Engine? If so Ii can check.

We ran them both last night successfully. You can also run 2 EZ-App engines on separate Phones. Meaning that one phone can run one EZ-AppEngine and another phone can run the other.

that app doesn't work anymore
Sound from your phone...can ONLY run with the app.....that's GAY!
I think it's great, but I really really dislike that the sound comes from the phone. Doesn't make since, and is much more prototypical from the loco obviously.
re-mindes me of the old mrc command station not much good.
