    "That's it? I wanted to see more"
    I guess that's the point of the ending; that we don't get to see it, as his life isn't being filmed any more.

      I think the ending is a commentary on how frivolous and throwaway TV is to its consumers. Truman is in their screens his whole life, and as soon as he leaves, the 2 guards just start surfing fir their next fix. Truman Show was a film that was miles ahead of its time.

      I don’t know if I would say that this movie was ahead of it’s time, because it was very successful at the box office. Usually whenever a movie is “ahead of it’s time” it doesn’t do well at the box office. Now a movie that’s ahead of it’s time would be Tron (1982)
      That’s a movie that’s a perfect example of being ahead of it’s time

    When I saw this in the theater I was disappointed we didn’t get to see what happened after he left, but later I decided it was the best ending. He walks out the door and he’s no longer on camera.

  • @henryparka3718
    @henryparka3718 Před 3 lety +151

    Truman leaving or choosing to leave is the only thing that matters. He steps into the dark, the unknown determined to become a real human being with a real life. It's the conclusion of his arc. The emotional core of the story. Everything that comes after is just the aftermath. Giving us an additional montage of him facing a horde of journalists under flashlights or hugging that woman or him working a real job would've lessen the impact of that ending.

    • @KurticeYZ
      @KurticeYZ Před 3 lety +12

      Yes thats the end of the show we dont get to see their real life as the viewer we dont get to see it either. Which is why i like the ending, however understandable upon 1st viewing to want more of the ending. I think they got it though as it is. Pretty much.

    • @powerofk
      @powerofk Před 3 lety +2

      Exactly. Anything after Truman's exit would be good for a sequel. A "Truman After the Show" type thing. But the story arc really does end when Truman walks out the door. That's the end of this story - and the beginning of the next one.

    • @jamesburgess2k
      @jamesburgess2k Před 3 lety +22

      Also I feel like we as the audience "shouldn't" see what happens next. Truman has been observed for his entire life, so it's really fitting that the beginning of his "real" life should be the first time he experiences real privacy.

We were like the audience in the film... so happy he got out.

    While they can't change the weather on a whim, the town is that perfect looking in real life. The Truman Show was filled in the planned community of Seaside, Florida and all of its houses and streets really do look like it does in the movie. The only thing they changed in post production is they added height to the buildings around where Truman worked. In Seaside and east along the Gulf of Mexico down to Seacrest and Rosemary Beach in Florida no buildings are taller than 3 stories and those are rare.

  • @drewbear1969
    @drewbear1969 Před 3 lety +4

    This film wasn't predicting anything, it was highlighting how cameras were everywhere then because we'd been pointing them at each other for decades. If anything, it likely influenced the direction that reality TV took in the 2000s. The widespread accessibility of handheld cameras and video tape in the 70s and 80s allowed us to dynamically record everything instead of just taking photos and making the occasional home movie, and by the 90s we were tuning in for major events as they happened, like the OJ Simpson trial. MTV first aired "The Real World" in 1992, but with the advent of the internet and of camera phones, people displaying their lives for entertainment was inevitable.
    Also, I've always considered Jim Carrey's first dramatic role to be in _The Mask,_ because Stanley Ipkiss was such a contrast to what he was known for then. That was the first time I remember wanting to see him do more serious roles.

  • @jamesburgess2k
    @jamesburgess2k Před 3 lety +5

    Also, the Truman Show was released not long before the start of "reality TV" like the Real World or Big Brother.
    So a lot of people see it as a cool prophetic piece of art that foreshadowed our current society, where celebrities like the Kardashians or Paris Hilton make a career on openly sharing their personal experience. Or even how so many regular people choose to constantly share their personal lives to the rest of the world with social media.

In fact, my best friend showed up to watch some of the filming and got a job as an extra walking down the street in one of the scenes. According to Peter Weir, Christoff started out with good intentions, but went kind of power-mad and turned into a raging control freak pretty early on. There's an in-universe documentary floating around on CZcams that explains a few more things, including how Marlin became friends with Truman (and it implies that his alcoholism and stint in "rehab" were his way of dealing with the guilt): he met Truman as a kid not knowing it was a TV show, so he was genuinely Truman's friend before he found out the truth (it's probably why he was absent from school for a month).

You saw - everything-. Rated PG or not if you know what I mean. The big difference is that she knew the cameras were there. Great movie, one of the first dramas for Jim Carrey - he can bring it when he wants. And this movie introduced me to one of the most beautiful Irish actresses I’ve ever seen - Natascha McElhone.

    I want to see a sequel to the Truman Show just call Truman exploring his life 20 odd years later. Does he live in constant paranoia? Does he suffer PTSD? Is he still trying to escape media attention? What does he think of youtube and Instagram where people voluntarily record their life? Don't repeat the same story twice but have a real character exploration.

      That would ruin it, because there is no purpose for a sequel rather than just curiosity without good reason

    There are other films with Jim Carrey that you should react to:
    - The Mask
    - Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
    - Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
    - Dumb and Dumber
    - Liar Liar
    - Bruce Almighty
    - The Cable Guy
    - Me, Myself and Irene

    A question that just popped up in my head right now:
    How the hell did the UN not do anything about this? This is literally a violation of human rights.
    But I guess in real life, the UN isn't doing a lot of things either.

    • @danimalplanimal

      The UN hasn't done anything about the concentration camps and organ harvesting in China either. The UN isn't going to do anything unless it serves their interests...

      Maybe I didn't think of that in the first place because the US also does a lot of bad things or just lets a lot of bad things happen in their own country. Idk. Its been a year.

    I do not mean this to come across as a negative criticism- but the fact that you want to keep seeing his story is kind of the point of the movie.
    Truman’s entire life was on TV and the moment he finally escapes and becomes free, we still want to watch. We still want to know.
    We ask ourselves “how could anyone do this to somebody? Fake their entire life for a TV show?”… and yet we still crave their story.

      Just because you don’t like him doesn’t mean you have to be ignorant of what genre this movie is. I suggest you pull your head outta your ass and pay attention to reality here

    I’m still debating on whether I’d want to see a sequel to The Truman Show. I’d love to see what happened when he left and reunited with Sylvia but I also feel like his character had been violated his entire life from conception till age 30, so I feel like it’d come off very tone deaf and tasteless to bring it back as well. It’s a dilemma for sure.

    Love this one! You guys need to watch the Snyder Cut next. I just saw that and it was great. It is 4 hours so you might want to split it up into 2-3 segments.
    And another good Jim Carrey movie is Liar Liar from 1997 since you like his work. Also - The Cable Guy from 1997 is so funny too.

    This is one of those films that begs for a sequel but I've never decided the time-afterwards. Immediately? (Ugh,no.) Five years? (No.) Ten? Twenty? Thirty? (That offers a chance to do flashbacks more effectively, and would give Truman a chance to have experienced a couple of new life-locations to endure before escaping a time or two, more.)
