Tom Hanks told a really great story on the Today show when he went for an interview. They were doing the interview in front of a window and they mentioned to him that across the street was a Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant, which the chain started because of this movie. Tom Hanks then said "Yeah I know. What's funny is that building used to be my bank back when I was a struggling actor. I would go in there and have to convince them to cash my unemployment checks. And if I could go back in time, one of the things I would do is go back to that bank and tell them 'One day this building is going to be a restaurant based on a character I play in a movie.'"

Jenny was the victim of abuse. As children who were abused grow older they often don’t feel they deserve love and push people away. I believe Jenny loved Forrest she just didn’t feel she deserved his love and ran away. It was only as she was dying she final let herself be loved by someone and she knew Forrest was a good man that would take care of her and their son.

      @kaigillam Před 3 lety +44

Not only that, but I think it's clear that she was worried that she would be taking advantage of Forrest if they were to get into a relationship, and that she would be doing to him what her father did to her. Not necessarily true, but an understandable concern for a survivor of abuse.

I love how this movie shows so many good life lessons. A lot of people dislike Jenny the first time watching this movie but she couldn't have been any other way. Two different paths. Both children have a bad start in life. Forest Gump with his low intelligence but the most obvious was his physical disability. That is what made people stare at him. Oh, and he is average looking. Nobody expects him to do something great with his life. Jenny at first seems to be healthy, with good social skills and she absolutely fits all the current beauty standards. Should make it far life. But the abuse took a toll on her mental health. Because she was leaking the lessons and the love Forest got from his mum this girl lived a selfdistructive lifestyle. Her problems might not have been as obvious as Forests but way more severe. So in the end, having good people raise you and surrounding yourself with them makes all the difference.

The book "Forrest Gump" is very fun too. It is written as if Forrest is talking as the narrator - in the same dialect that Tom Hanks used. He goes on so many other adventures, including going into space and being stranded on an island (ironic that Hanks was in Apollo 13 and Castaway).
One of the big differences is Jenny. In the book, she is truly in love with Forrest. She is much less of a tortured soul and traveling spirit.

I also like the aspect of "running" in this movie. Jenny told Forrest to run in the first place because she would run from her father's abuse. Jenny's running was based on the abuse by her father, running from being loved by Forrest (until she got sick), running from drugs, wild parties and abusive relationships. Forrest running led to getting his legs fixed, being on the high school football team, led to a college football scholarship, helped him save the men from the Vietnam war which got him a medal of honor and even starting a marathon. Both Forrest and Jenny ran throughout the movie and were impacted by it positively and negatively.

Fun fact: Tom Hanks has a brother Jim, who mostly does voice acting (done some real acting too), and they look so much alike, but in facial features and body stature, and height that they used Jim as Tom's running double in far away shots, so Tom could concentrate on filming other scenes. (Jim has also done Woody's voice for the Toy Story short stories, video games, the talking Andy doll toy, etc. since that would have been a lot for Tom to do, so Tom suggested Jim do it, and, so, he's done all of that. And you cannot hear that it's Jim instead of Tom.)

That was stunning to some, like me, as it was not set in Outer Space, or in a Fantasy Realm, and to others, that didn't realize how it was made, as it was so subliminal! The makers of, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", were able to use the same technology to make the crossover episode, "Trials and Tribble-ations". One guy made a quick demonstration video for another guy. The second guy, had to be told what he was looking at! That's how novel it was in the 1990s! 😊👍😎

They used Forrest's running to highlight a major theme throughout the film and not just in the literal sense. On one hand, you have Forrest running toward his future, and on the other you have Jenny running from her past. Tom Hanks had stated that what he said in on the stage in DC was "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing." Another great Tom Hanks film is A League of Their Own

    Hello Ladies,
Great reaction! Forest Gump has always been a very sweet and touching film. Unforgettable! Since you all have watched several films together; I was hoping you remembered some of the faces? Actress Robin Wright places Jenny. You all saw her in Wonder Woman. In addition, actor Haley Joel Osment plays Forest's son. You guys saw him as an adult in season 1 of The Boys. Anyways, thank you for posting. I always enjoy your videos. Happy Saturday! 😊

I like how you gals talk about the movie after the movie is over. I also watch other CZcamsr's "Reactions" which are just them reacting in the moment and when the movie is over the video is over. Those are nice but I really like when people discuss the movie afterwards. Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan are two of the best movies ever made. Both Tom Hanks, both emotional movies. I am glad you understand Jenny. So many people hate her but she is a broken soul. She keeps going into abusive relationships (forged from the abuse from he father), spirals out of control and then returns to Forrest to ground herself before again going back into her routine of abusive relationships. Tragic for Jenny and Tragic for Forrest. An emotional roller coaster. During Jenny's funeral the birds flying away goes back to Jenny and Forrest in the field hiding from her father and Jenny praying to become a bird so she can fly away from the abuse. You also mentioned the parents which is another contrast in the show. Forrest is special but raised by a loving mother and turns out ok. Jenny is normal but damaged by her father and is broken. Deep movie.

Hi Kevin, I really like this comment here! The Post-Reaction movie discussions done by Storm Akima reminds me of how my friends and I would walk out of a movie theater and then talk about our thoughts on the film we just saw while standing in the lobby of the movie theater....Forrest Gump is just such an inspirational movie, and I quote it all the time! My brother actually has Autism, which makes me connect with the movie even more (I know Forrest did not have Autism, but him and my brother relate in that they are both disabled).
I actually posted a video on my channel 2 Weeks ago that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention with the video was to create something that is unique and heart-felt.
If you have a few minutes sometime and are interested, here is a link to the video: czcams.com/video/Or-sIiNANYg/video.html
If you don't check it out, no worries at all! I won't be offended! But thank you so much in advance if you do see it! Have a great day, and stay safe!

Definitely one of my top 10 favorite movies..
Fun facts : Tom Hanks has a twin brother that runs cross country and he did all the running scenes. Tom changed his accent in the movie because the little boy with whom he shares the role of Forrest has an accent and he didn't want him to feel left out. Another is a question I see a lot, who is the man in the American Flag shirt ? Abby Hoffman.

In my opinion, Forrest wasn't the father of Jenny's illegitimate son at all. She was dying of a mystery virus (probably AIDS) and knew that Forrest would give her son a great life after she was gone. So she finally gave in and married Forrest. It worked out nicely all around, but still she was totally using him.

The feather, according to either director Robert Zemekis or Tom Hanks himself, is meant to symbolise the uncertainty of fate versus chance - does it land there because it was pre-ordained, or was it complete coincidence? Just like Forrest’s life, which seems so unplanned and chaotic and yet he rubs shoulders with so many key historic figures and actually builds a comfortable living with no small measure of celebrity and fame.
