The people want a general election, why in this instance won’t the Tories now support ‘the will of the people’? It’s all they banged on about from 2016-2019.
When has Rishi Sunak *ever* cared for what anyone but himself wants?
Because Rishi knows that people don't want to have a general election yet😂
@@IAt0m1xI speak for yourself 😅 i want the chance to vote these fuckwits out and have a leader we actually voted for at this point
Because now they would lose more than half of their seats. They've lost a large sum of voters to Labour, they have lost the Lunatics to Reform UK and a couple of seats to Labour and the LibDems in recent by-elections. They don't care about the "the will of the people". Otherwise the whole ordeal which brought them where they are now would not have been marketed as an opinion poll.
How do you know this? Did you ask us all?
Sunak Will call the election after he's finished ripping the copper wiring out of number 10

The Election date being up to the Prime Minister is the least democratic thing in this very undemocratic system we live in.
The PM cannot go past 5 years of course. THe Fixed Term Parliament Act fixed this, but then they found that a broken government couldn't resign so they changed it back!
we tried taking that power away, Hear of the fixed term parliment act? That resulted in deadlock if the PM cant call an election then in those situations your just stuck?
How? We vote a party/prime minister in for 5 years, if they’ve had enough they can call an election early, otherwise they should see out the 5 years like we expect. Stop writing nonsense 😂
Many countries (including Canada, Sweden, Australia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands) operate under this flexible-term election system, that have a maximum duration but can end earlier under certain conditions. It's not undemocratic.
@@thedutchfoxxxCanada has a fixed election law where date for the next election is always 4 years after the last at most. But of course it can be held sooner.

Gaslighting. They never add "... As long as it suits us", which is the truth Tories never admit.
If your will is voting Labour I hate to tell you that you are going to wish you hadn't. They are the reason we have had 14 yrs of this government and they won't be any better than the last time they were in. The country will be on its knees after only 2 yrs under Labour. The election should just be on a set date every time.
Well it kind of is. An election must occur no later than 5 years from the day that parliament first met.
They tried that with the Fixed Term Parliament act... It really didn't work as they had expected and caused a heap of issues.
It's better this way. Imagine a PM being a absolute dog 💩 year 2 of a 5 year term. Would you want another 3 years of it or an earlier election?
@@samelmudirThing is, would the terrible PM call for an early election, which could mean their early removal?
Doesn’t really work in the current system. 2019 proved this when the Fixed Term Parliament Act was still in force. Johnson lost some of his pro-EU MP’s and kicked some more out, meaning the government had no working majority. At the same time the opposition parties would not allow him to call an election. This culminated in them forcing Johnson to send a letter requesting an extension of EU membership against his will. Depending on what side of the debate you were on, you may have found this quite a good thing, but it’s certainly not something that could have continued for a further 2 years if the SNP and Lib Dems hadn’t caved and given him an election.
You missed some of the biggest factors:
- Small boats will increase over the summer due to weather, opening up strong attack lines for Reform UK.
- The tories are spending campaign finances too quickly and will run out if it's not until October
- Isaac Levido is in and out of number ten far more often than we'd expect 6 months out from an election.
That first point is actually very underrated. That issue alone can swing a lot of voters from conservatives to reform. Along with potentially more high profile defections to Reform as MP’s jump ship before it sinks.
Do people actually care about the small boats that much? Like I'm concerned with illegal migration and want to see the issue resolved obviously, but there are so many bigger problems that have a bigger effect on everyone. The country is falling apart ffs.
And the longer he waits to call an election, the more annoyed we'll all be that he's waited so long.
@@Wozza365 Most people don't, but these who do are often on the fence between Tory and Reform. With FPTP voting this could mean more Tory seats lost to other parties (not even to Reform).
@@Wozza365 The 25% that are still considering voting Tory and the 10% considering Reform do consider it one of their top issues. Conservatives have long abandoned any hope of regaining the "centrist" vote, but this is the wage issue that can decide whether Reform will get any MPs at all or if Conservatives will go below 100.
Also, keep in mind that even most people for whom this is a key issue don't understand how immigration works or how small of a fraction comes via small boats or the Rewanda bill itself. This is all about the headlines, Sunak wants to steal attention from Reform to get a 5% boost and the moment he does he will call the election.
The most important reason to delay the election is to hold onto power and the state's resources for a few more months.
Correct. See also above ✔ ✅
Why not they have a mandate for 5 years. People love to bash government try to do their job and lets see how you fare. Who does not know how to spell Autumn ?
Something you didn’t cover is that by delaying the election another 6 months they get to be in power for 6 more months as the Tories almost certainly will be thrashed. Rishi might just want 6 more months of being in the big seat, before retiring to his families islands and having cocktails
Also looks better on his CV to claim he was PM for 2 years once he inevitably after the election swans off to California.
This as far as I can see is the best argument for staying in power, and it's a very strong argument imho
this is the only thing I can understand would be the motivation moving forward. there isn't any good arguments for why it should be in may.
Mocktails, $unak doesn't drink alcohol and still somehow f**ks up ...
I mean if the earlier means less time to cause multiple scandals, then...
Why do people keep discussing this with political logic?
Rishi’s at the behest of his wife(‘s father’s) business interests. The obfuscation and FOI denials around any ongoings regarding infosys or similar meetings show that clearly.
He will run the country into the ground to be a good little lapdog; his joint interview with wife last week showed how much she resents and controls him.
He will hang in for as long as he can, the 1922 commission stepping up are the only thing that would force an election sooner than the last day.
theres also the fact that every month they delay hundreds of thousands more homeowners will reach the end of their pre inflation fixed term mortgages and be forced to remortgage at the much higher interest rate. Which will bring down their standard of living significantly whatever else is going on. And the tories rely on winning over established home owners as one of their core voting blocks to win elections. The more time goes by the more pensioners will notice that their taxes have gone up in the recent budget too and therefore their income has gone down. Pensioners being the last hard core group of tory voters in the country. There's also the fact that even if they get the Rwanda bill pushed through parliament they have no plan to actually get any flights taking off, and any plan they start putting together now will take months and a lot of money to get working. Which will make them look even more incompetent after pushing soo hard to bring it into law. If they do get it working then it will become immediately obvious that it has zero impact on small boat numbers. It really does make far more sense for them to get the election done soon before the other shoes drops on all these other issues
So the tories will cling onto power for as long as they possibly can. What a surprise 🙄
Whereas Labour in 79 and 2010 went after 4 years when knew would lose? Or waited until the end?
As an American let me just say that the blood contamination scandal, still going in 2024 is a MASSIVE DISGRACE. In America we dealt with the civil fallout for these things when it happened. The fact that there has been no civil or criminal Justice in Britain is WILD.

I'm deeply concerned with the rise of Reform UK. Why would people vote for a party that is nationalist and will likely redirect all the money to the top in the country? Even if ordinary people had money in the short term, in the long term (8-12 years) money will be concentrated in the few that have adapted to the new situation. Why risk that?
Immigration, It's obviouse the Tories are making too much money out of it and Labour are replacing their voters.
They just like the word reform
Reform doesn't have a coherent stance, they just say the word woke a lot and hope for the best. To some people, that's all they're bothered about.
I hadn’t realised victims were waiting on compensation, another reason the tories make me feel ashamed to be British. Economics is no excuse especially when they were given terminal illnesses. It’s as deplorable as 9/11 first responders now suffering from cancers and breathing problems not getting the financial support for medical care. Neither group should even have to ask. What kind of world is this!
Yup... still waiting on compensation. So far, they have paid interim compensation to a few victims and that's it. There is still no certainty they will compensate ALL the victims to this horrific scandal
In regards to Conservatives defecting to Reform though; how long do we think it will be before the public realizes (if ever), when it comes to the poll numbers, that Reform is just going to gradually shapeshift into a new Conservative party after all these mps changing ship?

Hold up, the government is supposed to pay those affected by Blood Scandal/Post Office; but then that just comes from the working taxpayer??
Shouldn't it be some sort of compensation directly from those in charge at the time for all of this, not the taxpayer?
That's literally where the Governments money comes from our taxes. The people that caused it were the NHS and the individuals involved probably don't remotely have enough money to pay for it

How is an election call an early election, last elections was in 2019, and since then we have had two PMs no one voted for.
It's going to be a disaster for the Tories no matter what date they hold it on. Therefore the only consideration is hanging on to the levers of power by their fingertips for as long as possible, I fear.
Quite likely they are rushing things through in the expectation of a May election. But that could just be to leave the option open, Sunak may then choose to take it, or not, quite possibly even he hasn't decided yet.
I said this last year due to the fact there will be loads of boats coming in over Summer.
I expect they’ll hang on as long as possible and put it in January. Though I'd be happy if it was earlier.
im convinced
A lot of people dont realize that organizing an election is not that easy. While I dont know about the laws in the UK, we in Germany get at least 3 months notice. If its a regular election, its about a year notice in advance.
I bet it's going to be on the day or after the day that students break for Christmas, like last time, so that they either forget completely or forget their documents so they can't vote.

May - before more can defect
General Elections in the UK usually take place in May. If we had one in May this year it could hardly be called an "Early" General Election. It would just be a General Election.
Hi, TLDR team!
With the Conservatives facing a predicted loss in the next general election- It'd be really interesting to look at whether Sunak would be likely to step down in this case.
How many PMs have ever lost a G.E. and stayed on as leader of the opposition? And for how long?
If Sunak became LotO, would he still have the party's support as leader?
Thanks for all the wonderfully informative content! ❤️
The last person to resign as PM but NOT as party leader was James Callaghan, who stayed on as Labour leader for about 18 months after losing the 1979 election. So Sunak's odds of remaining Conservative leader aren't great.
Historically, former PMs would often stay on for years and even become PM a second time at a later election, most recently Harold Wilson. Shoutout to William Gladstone who was PM 4 separate times in the latter half of the 19th Century.
I bet they announce it in the morning to get Sunak out of PMQ's.....
