    If I'm not entirely mistaken, that launcher was a MILAN. The first one in the video, anyway. The second one, which you compare to the TOW, is probably an ERYX.
    They're both wire-guided, TOW-esque, with the Eryx being the somewhat more modern of the two.

      Politics... Coalition forces only consisted of 1300 (initially) later up to 3000 german troops (including all branches, not just fighting force). With further 6 tornados (recon only) made available by the german government. Every mishap of the german contingent was cause of bad media coverage and further pressure on german politicians. You can't have a WW2 and then not expect the culture to drastically be opposed to war. Especially with the allies having taken respective actions in wake of establishing the west german government and it's constitution. The dogma of "Never ever shall this country participate in war" is so ingrained into germany, and designed that way by the victors, that the current situation is hardly surprising. Basically it's a case of "You cannot have the cake and eat it too."
      I am even astonished by the fact the germans participate at all, given that they rejected being part of the Iraq war.
      Also, the german military is a joke, generally speaking. In 2009 they didn't have a single officer with combat experience in afghanistan. And they cannot even operate without logistic support from other nations, due to lack of equipment.
      I can only recommend this read, it's hillarious: www.thedailybeast.com/german-soldiers-in-afghanistan-cant-shoot

      @@dontanton7775 Yes, I would agree for the most part considering you are talking about the general situation the German Army is in right now. The biggest problem is that it's funding went down a lot since the end of the cold war and even then money that was available wasn't always used for what it should have been used. Additionally politicians who shouldn't be in the defense department became head of said department and wanted to do or made some questionable choices/changes. The German Army was used by some politicians as a tool to further their individual careers instead of doing what would have been best for the army. In the last 10 years there have been so many incredible stories about the German Army like; only 2 working attack helicopters out of ~70 because of missing parts and no money, one supplier supplying bad ammo which made rifles inaccurate, the whole G36 fiasco which turned out to be driven by some politicians and that there wasn't really a problem, ... .
      There is a dogma of "WWII or something like that should never happen again in Germany" but that "the country shall never ever participate in war" isn't completely right. The German Army was created to protect Germany against the Soviets during the Cold War and was never intended to be an offensive army so to say. So there are still many politicians who think that way and politics getting more liberal didn't help that either.
      But yes culturally there are many Germans who despise the German Army and anything that has to do with it and the media is often on that side which in turn causes politics to be on that same side.
      Also Germany could rely on their NATO allies a lot for various things in the past which also never prompted change in the German Army. Recently there have been some changes in the right direction, especially after the Trump administration made clear to Germany that they will not always be able to rely on the US.
      They didn't have a single officer in the regular Army with combat experience because outside of specialized units the German Army has never seen actual combat until Afghanistan. So where should those with combat experienced come from?
      It is also not that easy to get the German Army deployed because every military action must be approved by the parliament (which isn't easy), that also includes special forces which is ridiculous. One way to avoid that is by giving NATO command over a unit which then can be deployed by NATO. That doesn't require the approval from parliament but only works for a certain amount of units so that only happens to specialized units like KSK which is why those Units have been in a lot more combat than pretty much any other German Army units.

      @dontanton7775 Před 3 lety +2

      @@kevinstallmann6204 Some good points raised there. Of course, in regards to "anti-war" stance I based that statement on the federal state level and populace mentality. The whole cold war was experienced in light of that self defense mentality. Though people lived in fear of total nuclear annihilation, and the decades are marked by a strong anti-nuclear/peace/green movement. While wide spread, the hard core of these political forces could be considered the origins of today's mainstream green party. Using the army outside of german borders was unthinkable at that time. As to the topic of funding, I would be interested where all that money goes. They are still the 7th largest military spender in the world. Where does all the money go?
      @Albrecht Ryan
      Hehe, sorry. To put some perspective on it: I am half-german myself ;)

    • @kevinstallmann6204
      @kevinstallmann6204 Před 3 lety +4

      @@dontanton7775 where does all the money go?
      Very good question. Apparently not where it is needed the most. I remember a few years back the then head of defense of Germany suggested opening kindergardens inside military installations to make it more appealing to parents or some shit like that. I don't know if they actually came through with it but the idea alone should give you some understanding of the situation.
      When the news about those helos broke there was also mentioned that many other things like fighter jets and tanks are in bad shape and if funding wouldn't increase it would be very likely that those won't make it in the next few years. I think after that report funding got a little better or at least directed in the right direction and I think it's somewhat getting better even though Germany still doesn't spend nearly enough on their military.

The VBCI shares much in common with the Vextra and X8A prototype IFVs, developed by GIAT Industries and Renault in the early 1990s. A total of 630 VBCI infantry fighting vehicles were ordered by the French Army. Deliveries commenced in 2008. The VBCI saw active service in 2010 in Lebanon and Afghanistan. In 2013 French Army deployed these IFVs in Mali. The VBCI is powered by Renault (Volvo D12) turbocharged diesel engine, developing 550 horsepower. It does look like the US LAV-25. Only our LAV has a weaker Detroit Diesel 6V53T, 300 hp engine.

    The French military is replacing the FAMAS which is a very reliable rifle that was used by the French, but the French military is replacing the FAMAS with the HK 416 a5
    And the reason why they choose it is because French military wanted to make their own firearms because they closed or refused trade with Germany import due to the fact of bad relations they had over the years with each other and the reason why the French is replacing the FAMAS to the HK416 ironically is because the manufacture in France closed and getting parts was hard to come by and coming in with very limited numbers, by the French seeing how prolific the 416 is they went with it cause many nations have adopted the 416
    If you want more info on the FAMAS and their reasoning there is an awesome channel called forgotten weapons where a guy who looks like Jesus tells how it came into production and how the project started and also the man also owns a FAMAS

  • @zweb262
    @zweb262 Před 3 lety +1

    I think part of the reason they bought the FAMAS was because it wasn’t German, and partly because the company that made the FAMAS had been making the French army rifles since Napoleon was in power. The factory closed a few years back. Ironically, they want to replace the FAMAS with the HK416, which is made in Germany.

    • @MadKlauss
      @MadKlauss Před rokem

      wtf are you talking about? The FAMAS and the company that made it were made by the French government. That's why they're switching over because there's no one making the gun and parts for it after the contract ended as the company was ceased by the government.
