The BBC did a great series on the Spanish Civil War. It was narrated by Jeremy Irons. It’s quite old now like 70s or 80s but I think it’s on CZcams.

I have a theory on "For Whom The Bell Tolls"...
It's become clear to me that Robert Jordan, the main character is dead, and is a ghost reliving an endless loop.
It's right in the name, i don't know how everyone missed this... "For whom does the bell toll? It tolls for thee."
The first line of the book is "He awoke on the cool, brown, pine needle floor of the forest." While the last line, while he's mortally wounded, is "He lie down on the cool, brown, pine needle floor of the forest."
And, the entire book, Jordan remarks about a feeling of familiarity and destiny; and that he's known Maria, and some of the others in Pablo's warband, forever. The grip of his pistol is the most familiar thing in the world, it's been a constant companion, etc, but then later it says he had just acquired the gun before the current mission.
There's all kinds of things like that... I think Robert Jordan is in purgatory, and Hemingway didn't tell anyone. He wanted to see if people figured it out.

I'm Spanish, and have been subscribed to The Lotus Eaters for quite a while, so it's great to see you guys covering this topic. You do a very good job laying out the events leading up to the war, especially since you accurately name some that are usually glossed over or not considered as important. Certainly, there was much more at play than "fascism" vs "left-wing republicans"-the roots of the conflict are buried deep in Spanish history. The quote from Beevor is also very accurate.
That said, I wanted to make a minor correction, or, at least, expand upon one topic. The centralist-regionalist tension was key at the time and is still very relevant in Spanish politics to this day. For its relatively small size, Spain does have a great deal of cultural and social complexities. It's a very heterogeneous country and regional cultures are in fact quite distinct, which is both a blessing and a curse. We have one national language, but three additional regional ones: Basque, Catalan and Galician (my own). These three regions have traditionally harbored the strongest regionalist sentiments, but only two of them, the Basque Country and Catalonia, have ongoing seccessionist movements.
My corrrection has to do with your summary of Catalonia's political issues. You said, if I understood correctly, that they were independent at some point, and that's not correct. Catalonia did have a parliament of sorts at some point, but has never been an independent political entity-they were, first, a part of the Kingdom of Aragon and, then, integrated into the joint crowns of Aragon and Castille. Some "imaginative" Catalan historians have tried to reframe the region's support for a different king during The War of the Spanish Succession as a seccessionist venture, but that's not true. Attempts to rewrite history to legitimise current political goals are not just a thing the woke left does, I'm afraid. The Succession War, which, one way or another, involved most of the major European powers at the time (including Great Britain), might be another interest topic for you to cover one day.

I'd probably say that the reason the Spanish civil war causes so much seething and coping is that it was the revolution that Failed. Badly.
The republicans were too busy infighting, purging and being infiltrated by the soviets while the nationalists generally got on the same page and fought together, at least for the war.
Not only that but the precious militias and international brigades were frequently beaten not just by the army, but by militias and international units of their own, who were often better trained, better equipped and more effective. While Orwell was fighting with a poorly supplied equipped and trained POUM band made of teenagers, Peter Kemp, a staunch British anti-communist, fought with the Carlist Requetes and the Spanish Legion, absolute in their conviction and hatred of communists.
It's just that the Nationalists shunned and hated journalists while the Republicans couldn't ger enough of them, giving them exaggerated reports of heroism and bravery. The International brigades were given much of the credit for the victory of the battle of Madrid, despite the fact that they hadn't been properly trained yet, and were there for the photo op.
This is combined with the point that Spain was the one who got away out of the fascist/axis states, avoiding any allied defeat or occupation, unlike the other states who either got occupied and brutalised by the soviets, or reconstructed by the Americans if they were lucky. They had a relatively stable transfer back into democratic power, and still maintain their monarchy.

@@AWOL401 he managed to keep all the various groups on the right together, a massive achievment given that they were political rivals with vastly separate ideologies. Doing this meant they could crush the degenerate leftist forces. Without Franco, the Republicans could have won and Spain would have been ruined. He is a hero. A great man of the 20th century. He also kept Spain out of WW2. He had to stay in power because of leftists' possible resurgence, always plotting in the east during the 50's, 60's and 70's. I'm glad he got rid of them. Decades of subtle and not so subtle leftist propaganda makes you believe he was "mediocre". Because leftists control all institutions, including within education, we on the right are not afforded the luxury of having our own heroes but thankfully we know our history well. In the future of Europa there will be more wars like that of Spain and you will pray for a Franco.
