Alas the transcript used a robot translator. Thus the robot used 'rachel' rather than 'ritual'. Very confusing! This is so fascinating! Thank you for giving us some connection to this respected cultural way. I like the example about the meaning of the practice of investing a spiritual gratitude to the skins for protection for infants and mothers in keeping one another close. And in funeral preparation, the wish to bear the dead body to the grave. The redeeming freedom in the faith in the infinity through Christ's sacrifice, example: Christ as shepherd but also himself as humbling himself as a human being. The Spirit lifts the believer from ones own skin and joins the living spirit beyond. The soul seeks goodness.

We all know for sure that God can communicate with his people in mysterious ways and in a place where we had no bible no church no Pastor for centuries before the first missionaries came to South Africa with Christianity.
Do you people ever stop to think that what if this was God’s way of communicating with us ?

    • @ShofarEastLondon
      @ShofarEastLondon  Před 3 lety

The Bible reveals that God does speak through Creation. We can see that God is good, because He created a beautiful world, and gave us eyes that can see colour, and the gift of loving one another as human beings. So yes, God does speak through everything around us, because He is the Creator.
Yet, as Christians, we've been given the Great Commission, which is to go into all the world and tell every person about the incredible Saviour Jesus Christ, who died a horrible death. Jesus went through hell (in a sense) so that you can and I can have Heaven (an eternity with God).
That is why the original missionaries came to Africa, to tell people about Jesus and many of them lay down their lives in the process of doing that. It's called love. It's God's love that's impacted Christians' hearts to go and tell others of the wonderful gift of eternal life in Jesus.
Yes, God speaks through creation and gives us general understanding that there must be a Creator. Then, through the Bible and the actual history of God becoming a man, in Jesus, and dying for us, we discover revelation, or revelatory knowledge. This reveals to us that Jesus Christ is The Way, The Truth and The Life. There is no other path to God the Father but through Jesus.
I know it's not a popular position, but truth is still truth, even when it's unpopular.
You need to ask yourself if you have found the truth? Have you found life? Do you have a living relationship with God?
If not, how about considering seeking out the truth about Jesus? It might just blow your mind, as it blew mine when I had a life-giving encounter with Jesus Christ.
My life has never been the same again, and because of that, I want to tell the whole world about this wonderous Saviour.
Bless you and thank you for engaging with me

Up until 27:53 i was with Pastor Mkonwana. The Bible was not available to our forefathers, they could not go directly to the Creator nor could they go through Jesus. The name for the creator in our language was uQamata. The protocol for ordinary people was that you cannot speak to power directly and had to go through a mediator. So our people would speak to kings through amaphakathi and to Qamata through izinyanya, just like christians do today through Jesus. Our ancestors were never meant to be objects of worship just the mediums through which we can reach the supreme being. Our forefathers did not have pastors and prophets to talk to and bring their issues for resolution so the would go to amaqirha.

Hi Jethro, thank you for commenting, and for watching the video.
The good news is that the Bible, God's word and truth, is available today, even if your forefathers didn't have access to it at first.
Through ignorance people groups have done many things over the ages, like worship trees, sacrifice their babies to false gods, or even cannibalise others.
The invitation to each of us is to evaluate our culture, our beliefs, and practices according to a standard of truth. Every culture has good in it, and aspects that we should rather throw out.
The Bible is undeniably the truth, and we need to align our lives and beliefs accordingly. You will be blessed by God if you follow God's word.
To ignore the Creator's handbook to life will only lead to pain and disappointment.
The Bible reveals that there is only one mediator between man and God, namely Jesus Christ. He is the only sinless man to ever live on this earth because He was God who became flesh to save us from our sins.
Trust in Him, and pray to God the Father through Him (or in His name, the name of Jesus Christ) and you will be blessed and truly connect with God.
Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father, except through Me." John 14:6
All other mediators will disappoint you, because Jesus is the only way to Father God.
Do you have a Bible? Go check it out for yourself. Bless you

      Hi Thando, thanks for commenting.
You are mistaken to think Christianity is a "western colonist religion".
Christianity originates from the middle east, and Jesus Christ wasn't white, but most probably had a middle eastern toned skin colour.
Christianity also originates from the God who created the universe.
There's only one who Created everything, and the only way to know the One true God is through Jesus Christ. Only Jesus died for all your sins on the cross. Your ancestors didn't die to save you.
But, if you want to follow some man-made local religions, which leads to a dead-end, then you're free to do so. :)
Bless you and thanks for watching and commenting.

Hi Lwethu, thanks for engaging with us about this topic.
Here is a reply from Pastor Vuyo who has done an in-depth study of the Xhosa culture:
Originally Xhosa people did not spill blood willy nilly. Historically blankets were not available so an animal skin was used to cover and carry a baby and others who were born. The purpose was the skin, not the ceremony.
It is important to study the culture and not just take it from what you see now.
For an example, today people drink alcohol during funerals and after (after tears) and secondly, today to bury someone takes a week or two weeks, yet historically a person would die today and tomorrow they would be buried.
Historically when someone died the whole family would start fasting, windows would be darkened, they only ate food such as maize, no meat during this time and drink black tea or coffee with no milk and they would not even slaughter animals. That is why some families today will have half-cooked maize when people are coming from the grave before they could even eat what is prepared. Children were not allowed to go to the funerals. And when a funeral procession passes people, people would not be on the same street with the procession if they did not attend, and some would take off their hats as the coffin passes. Yet today no one gives that respect. The culture has changed.
Today people make expensive funerals, slaughter animals, have coffee/tea with milk, windows are not darkened, people no longer respect or fast when they lose their loved ones.
Today if someone does not cook and slaughter during the funeral it becomes a taboo and tomorrow if people won't have after tears alcohol it will be a misnomer. Today people do not differentiate between isiko nesithethe.
One needs to study the culture and see how it has changed. God bless you

Welcome to this series on Xhosa Traditions from a historical and biblical perspective. The reason we made these recordings were to help new believers in Christ who come from a Xhosa background to understand some of the Xhosa traditions from a biblical perspective.
If you watch this and you're not a true follower of Christ it might be difficult to understand where the speaker is coming from.
All culture, from every nation and people group on earth, needs to submit their culture and practices to the King of the Universe Jesus Christ. He is above all earthly culture, and He gives us the ways of Heaven which can be called the Kingdom culture.
Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life. If you desire blessing in your life and true relationship with God the Creator of all, then you need to follow His ways as revealed to mankind in the Bible, God's word.
Every white person, who begins to follow Jesus needs to re-evaluate certain aspects of their culture, and so does every black person, or Indian, or coloured. One culture isn't better than another, but each culture needs to submit to the Kingdom culture, as revealed in God's word.

I totally disagree with you Pastor.. What is most cunning about you is the fact that you first act like you understand our culture then later attract people towards Christianity, the main purpose of this video is to attract people towards Christianity not to understand our culture....
The greatest injustice that has ever happened to us as Africans is not having our own book(Bible) to always refer to whenever we are faced with people of your caliber.

    • @ShofarEastLondon
      @ShofarEastLondon  Před 3 lety +2

Zukisa, you are free to disagree. Truth is exclusive. You and I can't both be right. 2+2=4, not 5 and not 10. It is the same with spiritual things and cultural things. The truth sets us free, but wrong beliefs lead to pain and disappointment.
Speaking the truth, which I am doing, is not cunning or deceptive, it's called love.
Would you allow your 3-year-old to run across the street to be hit by a car? No, you wouldn't. Love would speak up and say, "Hey, don't do that, it's going to hurt!"
That's all we are doing. We are sharing the truth of God because we love people.
When I turned to Jesus I had to decide whom I will serve. Will I serve my culture and other people's opinions? Or, will I serve King Jesus, the Creator of the Universe and the source of life? I chose to serve Jesus and I rejected anything that wasn't pleasing to Him. Every culture has aspects that needs to be rejected in the light of God's truth. And every culture has beautiful aspects that can be celebrated and embraced.
That's what you need to choose between. Will you serve people and culture, even if it's hurting you and your people? Or will you serve King Jesus who wants to set you free and bless you? It's your choice. There's nothing "cunning" about sharing the truth.
Bless you and thank you for commenting.

What is misleading to me the most is that your heading says Xhosa Traditions Examined... But listening to the conversation, the examiner himself bases his arguments on false claims just so he may lift high his Faith or chosen way of Life.
I am not saying lifting his own Saviour is wrong but darkening other people's way of life just so his may glow is what I am against, you can fully spread the Biblical teachings without directly making another culture seem low and wrong.
Atleast I know you are also a Christian so I understand the context this interview comes from.
If I knew that the purpose of the whole interview was to lift Christianity over Xhosa Traditions I wouldn't have commented at all because I know these things hardly leave a good taste on mouths of those who choose to be involved..

@LIYEMA Tshume Thanks for commenting Liyema. How old are the Xhosa traditions? Hundreds of years? Maybe a thousand? What came before that? Where did everything start? How do you know the Xhosa beliefs are true?
Christianity is not a white man's religion, and Jesus Himself was most probably not white, but rather darker-skinned. All of mankind was created by God, therefore God as revealed by the Bible has the right to define how we should live, or how we should not live.
In Jesus, we discover what is true. The message of Christ is for all people, of all skin colours, because we were all made by God Himself. When you ignore the teachings of Jesus you will only find pain and more pain. Blessing is only found in following Jesus Christ.
