- We examine Xhosa Traditions from a Historical and Biblical Perspective.
Pastor Vuyo Mkonwana is vastly experienced in Xhosa traditions. He lives and works in the Xhosa heartland, in East London (South Africa). He is currently finishing his doctorate on aspects of Xhosa traditions and culture.
In Part 1 we ask him about the origin of traditional practices including initiation school.
In Part 2 he gives the background of Imbeleko and Ukukhatshwa. He also gives context for meaningful dreams and divine calling.
In Part 3 he addresses the worship of ancestors and people (apostles) in churches. He gives context for polygamy and gives an introduction of the Bible to Xhosa people.
Welcome to this series on Xhosa Traditions from a historical and biblical perspective. The reason we made these recordings were to help new believers in Christ who come from a Xhosa background to understand some of the Xhosa traditions from a biblical perspective.
If you watch this and you're not a true follower of Christ it might be difficult to understand where the speaker is coming from.
All culture, from every nation and people group on earth, needs to submit their culture and practices to the King of the Universe Jesus Christ. He is above all earthly culture, and He gives us the ways of Heaven which can be called the Kingdom culture.
Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life. If you desire blessing in your life and true relationship with God the Creator of all, then you need to follow His ways as revealed to mankind in the Bible, God's word.
Every white person, who begins to follow Jesus needs to re-evaluate certain aspects of their culture, and so does every black person, or Indian, or coloured. One culture isn't better than another, but each culture needs to submit to the Kingdom culture, as revealed in God's word.
The Plan of Salvation which is founded upon the atonement of the blood of the Lamb, Jesus the Christ and keeping God's commands, is the entrance into the kingdom for all. BUT the kingdom of God has a royal family, God's chosen people, Israel and the rest of humanity will be Israel's subjects, that's God's Plan of Salvation for eternity. If you fail to tell the Xhosa nation, who they are in God's kingdom, you are still missing the mark. Once they know who they are, they will embrace God's Plan of Salvation even more.
As one from the elders in the United States whose own grandmother taught English in 1900s at the Haskell Institute, a residential school for native Americans in Kansas, I had deep dialogues with her about those issues that arose from the tragic fracture of tribal customs as a result of their curriculum then. I find the comments not alien but enlightening.
Christianity was never constructed or formed for any African tribal groups especially Xhosa people, it’s quite disturbing watching how flawed your information is been presented, it’s very disturbing watching this video, title of this video is misleading should’ve just titled it as a “personal opinion of a pastor about Xhosa traditions” I honestly can’t believe I clicked on a video about a pastor’s opinion about Xhosa traditions, just go re-title this video

If Christianity is true, which we believe it is and the Bible is the word of God, written by the Creator God (as His Holy Spirit inspired men to write it), then Christianity is for every person on the planet.
The God of the Bible created the universe, and made this planet inhabitable; then He created the original man and woman (and all animals). He made us, and therefore He has the right to determine how we should live.
You can choose to ignore His Word, and deny that He is your Creator, but that would be detrimental to you. You will miss out on peace, on true joy, and eternal life. There is no life outside of Jesus Christ.
If you have an issue with what is shared on this video, then you have an issue with the Bible, and therefore you have an issue with Jesus Christ, and ultimately the God who made you. Those who reject Jesus Christ cannot have a living relationship with God the Father. Do you want a living relationship with God?

Being a Christian doesn't mean you should abandon in your culture or tradition follow christianity but don't abandon in who you are or where you come from.
Hi DJ, thanks for commenting. That is correct. We don't abandon our culture or reject where we come from. Yet, we do evaluate aspects of our culture or where we come from to determine if it is sinful or brings a curse on our lives.
Every culture has good parts and not so good parts.
Do you want evil to reign in your life? Or, do you want God to bless you?
If you want a blessing, then you need to turn away from those things that are contrary to God's Word, the Bible, and live according to His ways. That's the only way to peace and true life in Jesus Christ.

As believers in Christ, the moment we turn to Jesus, and are "born-again" as John 3 speaks of, then we are changed into new creations, and become citizens of heaven, or what is called the Kingdom of Heaven. As Christians, when we become part of the Kingdom of God, then the culture of heaven transcends all other cultures, that is why in Christ there is no black or white or rich or poor or German or South African, but we are all brothers and sisters in Christ.
Heaven's culture must become our primary identity. This is why Jesus is the answer to break down all barriers between people whether it is the colour of our skin or our position in society.
We are first citizens of heaven before we are citizens of South Africa. This brings unity between all Christians from all over the world. I hope this makes sense to you?
When we embrace Jesus, then every part of our lives are saturated with His truth and freedom. It ultimately comes to priorities. If Jesus is the Lord of our lives, then we are first a Christian, and then secondly a Xhosa, or South African. Jesus defines us, not our earthly culture.

@@Khusta...Ngcupe Hi Khusta, thanks for commenting. When it comes to Christianity, you need to go to the Bible and look at who Jesus was and the original disciples for the standard of Christianity. There are some pastors that misrepresent Jesus, and many pastors that represent Jesus well.
From the perspective of God's Kingdom this world is temporary, and our lives like a mist that disappears as the sun appears.
Eternity is what ultimately matters, and the pursuit of riches, houses, and earthly things simply doesn't satisfy. God's word and experience reveals that no earthly thing can satisfy, only knowing Christ will lead to peace and rest for one's soul.
Having things or a lot of things isn't the issue. You can be wealthy and be a faithful Christian when you don't serve money or things.

The topic was enticing but not what I expected. I appreciate the effort though. It's not what I expected because you are surely not awoken yet. Of course, being awoken can't be forced on any one. It's a process and it requires a searching mind and spirit.

(3) Most of the traditions we practice are in the bible. (4) Our language is in the bible. (5) Our locations (where we dwell) are in the bible. (6) We are the people of the bible and authors of the bible.

(8) Impucuko (civilization) yanikwa yafundiswa Enoch wesixhenxe emva ko Adam, engumntu omnyama, efundiswa ngamazulu, Waze yena wafundisa abantwana bakhe, yehla njalo, njalo, yada yafika kuNowa (emnyama), Waze Nowa wafundisa abakhe abantwana, Nowa noShem bafundisa uAbraham wase Ure yamaKhaledini. Yena uAbraham according to the ancient historian, Flavius Herodotus, wafundisa the Egyptians (medicine, mathematics, architecture, etc). AmaJiphethe ayengabantu abamnyama. Can you please give the logic behind your reasoning as to why you decided to call a Christian Pastor to examine the amaXhosa Tradition and your line of questioning in regards to amaSiko of amaXhosa 🤔........!
Hi Mncedi, thanks for your comment. This Christian pastor grew up in the Xhosa culture and now being a pastor he is able to interpret life and culture through the lens of the Bible. We specifically say that the Xhosa Traditions Examined from a biblical perspective.
God's Word, the bible is truth, and all cultures need to be evaluated through it's lens, if we want life and freedom. This series is specifically to help Christians navigate the complexities of Xhosa culture. Bless you

@@ntabozukosana6980 Originally initiation school started with an intention to take young boys, train them by teaching them morals; history; politics; social values of loving their community of protection. And they became responsible men in society.
Over time this has changed and young men often do not come back with the values intended for the school.
It is very disappointing and not beneficial for the communities at all. A lot of times the state that the young men come back in from the school these days, that's if they come back alive is heartbreaking.
Rituals were not part of the school. They have no bearing in the making of a man (a responsible respectable man in society).
It was reported in December 2019 that 19 boys died in the Eastern Cape. And the traditional affairs MEC is intervening in the processes of initiation because this has become dangerous. Here is the SABC news link:
