  • I went for Salmon fishing with friends today June 15, 2021. I had three bites but missed all three. Although, I was fortunate to witness friends landed a couple beautiful Salmon, and also a couple beautiful Sturgeon.

2021 WA Anti-Snagging rules, on page 19 of the rules pamphlet, under the “tackle” section, “it is unlawful to possess a fish taken from freshwater that was not hooked inside the mouth or on the head. The head is defined as any portion forward of the rear margin of the gill plate.”
This rule would apply to salmon fishing on the Columbia River (from wild life office). So fish caught here was perfectly legal guys. Thank you for watching!

@@BackFishing Just did some digging just so we are clear of what is legal and is not legal hook set. On page 19 of the WA area rules pamphlet, under the “tackle” section, “it is unlawful to possess a fish taken from freshwater that was not hooked inside the mouth or on the head. The head is defined as any portion forward of the rear margin of the gill plate.”
Therefore, the fish caught perfectly legal.

To bad there are no longer 60 to 80 pound kings in the Columbia. Back in the late 80s there was a small run in the river at that time and the state did not want people to know were they would migrate to in the river. then when the state went to that location they found this small run all killed by dynamite and that type of salmon no longer exists. It was on the local news at that time.

Hard to imagine what it would be like to hook a fish that big. Thanks for the info Mark!

The state record chinook was 62# and it came from the elochoman river ..I personally caught a 52# there years ago when the hachery still produced fish .

    • @WestCoastOutdoors

A lot of guys use custom built surf rod around 11-12 feet. The particular surf rod that I used in this video is the factory built Shimano Speedmaster 12 feet.
