Saw this when it came out in '78, I was 13. Best car car movie ever! Inspired me to build my own cars & motorcycles, & eventually own my own shop. Makes me miss the 70's & 80's even more.

Love this movie. I'm 50 years old and I definitely remember watching this when I was a kid. I also have this movie on dvd.
Lol me too.

Corvette Summer, Gumball Rally and the first Cannonball Run movie are my all time favorite car movies. Back when there was no CGI or dubbed over motor sounds. Pure classics.
Give "Vanishing Point" a try. Best car movie of all time.
Original gone in 60 seconds, great flick too
@@williamtobin7282 I loved that movie.i rented the movie when I was younger and later in my life I bought a VHS copy of the movie and I think that I never opened it.
I loved it when all the stunts were real! Remember the one where they went over the river on a jump that corkscrewed the car over the river and then landed perfectly on another ramp? Was that Gator with Burt reynolds?

English bloke here.
In 1977 my dad took me to Santa Pod raceway to see my first drag race.
Everything was great, the sun was shining and I had a hot-dog with onions, as I walked through the pits holding my dad's hand when from behind me BOOM!!! ROAR!!!
I span found in shock! There it was. A white Corvette Stingray with chrome straight-up pipes sticking right up from the block! The car had a metal-flake Star-Spangled banner painted from the bonnet fading to the rear arches.
That was the first American car I ever saw... This rocked my eight year old world!!!! 🇬🇧🏆🇺🇲
Best wishes from an Englishman making armour in a French forest. ⚒️
Way cool!

I eventually became an aircraft mechanic and this movie had a lot to do with it. Seeing it again reminds me of what a great time the 70s and 80s were to be on this planet. Very few Millenials and Gen. Z's are interested in working with their hands and the reliance on technology is frightening. I weep for the future.
I am 64 and still work with my hands
It's weird to me, how easily America gave up freedom for technology, and convenience. In my opinion, technology is now diametrically opposed to freedom.
U weep? I imagine the sort of movies coming out this days scares me. Nothing much to tell about sum American exploits in the Middle East , going through trash bin of comic book materials.
This type of movies about coming off age , innocence like Dazed and Confused , American Graffiti won't be made no more.
Thing is though people of the 70s and 80s made it damn near illegal to do things with your hands anymore because you wanted to feel more safe. Hence the huge fight for right to repair across many forms of industry right now.
yet another old timer blame the young for shit mean while the majority of the reason things are the way they are today is BECAUSE OF YOUR GENERATION.
market crass in 08, 1000+ stupid safety laws including car safety, all the trash laws communist California has passed like the laws that restrict ones 2nd amendment rights to name a few.

This is one of the few car films that clearly had some gear heads involved in the production, it’s great.
You want gear heads....watch HOLLYWOOD KNIGHTS...Great movie
@@tommccallan8802 I know it well. The Project 57 plays a great part in it. I always liked the chopped and sectioned ‘40 Ford too.
Dusty Springfield singing one of the best movie theme songs ever! Her voice is perfection. I remember seeing this as a kid at the drive in. The 70s were a great time to be a kid.
you're right everyone riding their bikes and playing baseball with other kids. Atari could only hold your attention for less than an hour - out you'd go to ride your bike some more. America was on top. The envy of the world. Proud then. What happened? It started with... The Cosby Show... and then like... Will & Grace... who wants to bring that radical shit into our living rooms? Network television in the '80s started to Manchurian Candidate American society. We went from Happy Days and Brady Bunch to Married with Children and Modern Family. Go figure. And forget about a shoot-first ask questions later cop show like Starsky and Hutch or TJ Hooker... cue Miami Vice - oh so cops are now you know... CROOKED. the undoing of America went into full swing during the eighties no doubt. Grunge didn't help; Rap just destroyed it all.
For a comedy filled with inanities and absurdities, by the time you reach the end, it’s actually a very deep and moving coming of age movie. Mark Hamill’s performance throughout is stellar.
Agreed
so well said- this movie is meant to be light hearted fare and popcorn drive-in cheesy fodder - but really Hamill grows up thru his quest - a hero's journey - Annie Potts did what Marisa Tomei did for My Cousin Vinny. But first. What a gem she is! Hamill's best acting - he's so convincing as the gearhead so bought in, fanatical. Amazing 70's road movie filmed on location - like the tv shows of the time like Starsky and Hutch etc. A golden age of cinema in a way. Not like CGI circus of today - which might as well just be a video game instead of a movie half the time sheesh.
This movie has always been very underrated! There are so many established stars in this movie from the day. This was also Annie Potts very first film. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her character Vanessa! Not bad for her first role. Mark Hamill made this movie just 2 months after Star Wars was released. His convincing role portraying Kenny Dantley's passion for the Corvette and cars in general is what makes it a cult classic for car enthusiasts! The Corvette itself is so over the top you can't help but love it as much as he does.
Star Wars came out in 1977
Funny coincidence, the sleazy blonde boss of the car theft ring also starred in the movie lazerblast, a Sci fi m🤣ovie where he finds this alien rock pendant and arm Lazer and is turned into a monster ,one scene he shoots and blows up a billboard of ,,,ironically,,,STAR WARS🤯

I just love Annie Potts in this movie. It's one of her best along with "Pretty in Pink".
She's absolutely adorable
Glad I grew up back then sure miss the 70s.
This was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. I was really obsessed with Corvettes growing up still sort of am. Seeing this now surprises how well this was made.
Why is that true?
I realized it myself, movie was made really well, like they used the best camera tech and stuff at the time for this movie
@@RX-8GT I agree with you. When I watched it again for the first time in years I was in my mid-30s I was surprised at how well it was made. I expected to see it differently from when I was a child and realize it was a cheap B-movie. Instead, I feel like it's a forgotten classic now.
In my opinion, the name ruined the movie. I love Corvettes with all of my heart but the name places too much emphasis on a brand making it seem like a glorified advertisement.
I can watch Corvette Summer on repeat just like when I was a child. It's an easy movie to watch and I love anything that has to do with cool cars.
The car chase at the end is one of my favorite car chase scenes.
🔥me☝️Best scene is a toss up…either stealing the doughnuts from the cops…or the bathtub and swim fins. Either way I agree this was a really well made movie with a decent story line. I don’t think I heard one swear word in the whole film. First saw this on HBO I believe it came on to HBO slightly after Star Wars was hit the theaters. It was fun seeing it again.
I was 12 when it played at my father's movie theatre. I still have a big pile of Corvette Summer bumper stickers. It was silly fun in 78, and the film exists very much in that world, making it also a time capsule for today.
So you're old enough to remember when Star Wars came out. I miss how movie theaters were back then

@@guntherg7328I’d love to get one of those stickers

I saw this in the late 70's ! I can't believe I'm watching it again more than 40 years later...amazing
Funny how ya don't remember certain things in a movie. I remember watching it 1979. I was 17. I thought it was a good movie then. I saw it on HBO. Back when it still showed movies.

Wow! Can't believe this just popped up in my recommendations. This was this first movie I went to see without my parents. Completely forgot about it. Thank you for posting this.
This and the 1989 Catch Me if You Can.
One of my all-time favorite movies! I remember when it came out, I sure miss the 70s. I was just a kid but life sure was great back then, at least in my hometown it was. I can hardly go back there now; everything has changed so much for the worse it's hard to even recognize the place.
@@PuFFerTV98368 I am so glad I am fifty now and grew up during this time, before internet - the world is so jaded now and the spirit of people is so downtrodden, defeated - kids today don't have any go-getter attitude like Hamill personifies in this film. It's a cariacture, it's overblown exaggerated for comedic effect - but the passion and feracity of his character: there's something to be said for that idea, having a go-getter attitude like that. He was relentless. Inspiring! By far, Hamill's most significant portrayal bar none in my books. Forget that vapid Luke sh*t - which pales so much to the fleshed out true humanity here. Annie Potts says it best hosing him down - he's a winner.
When i first saw this movie in 1978, I fell
madly in love with Annie Potts and Vans.
Now it's over 40 years later and i still feel the same way about both.

I was 7 when this came out , saw it at the drive in , the opening with the vette overhead, from the script falling in the dirt to the crusher, stayed with me my whole life , I was building custom models and cars as I got old enough, I love this movie ,even with its cheese.
The love story between boy and car REALLY took hold of me.
and to think Annie Potts is now the grandmother to Sheldon
Who’s Sheldon?

I assume you don’t want TV?
Sheldon Cooper, one of the main cast members of “The Big Bang Theory”. After it ended, a new series was created about him in his younger years called “Young Sheldon”. On CBS on Thursday’s. Narration is done by the adult Sheldon, played by Jim Parsons. Annie Potts plays Meemaw who is the grandmother of Sheldon’s Mom. I think Annie Potts was 28 for this movie and currently 70 now.
@@troykruse5161" Young Sheldon" is a spin off of "The Big Bang Theory". Now showing on TBS. "The Big Bang Theory" has grown up Sheldon and "Young Sheldon" is the same character but is 9yrs old in high school.

I was 15 when this came out at the drive in. I miss the seventies but especially the 80s.
Would love to see Mark Hamill and Annie Potts together again...
Corvettes and pull tab cans , glad to grow up in the 70s . Two thumbs up .
I remember watching this movie at the Drive-in, sitting in my 1957 Chevrolet Belair 2 door hard top. Ahhh the good times.
My dad had a 56 when I was a kid in the 80s, mostly original interior.
I loved that car, and I can smell your comment.
The old Vegas I knew and loved.
The paint and detail job on the Corvette was indeed over the top, rewatching this makes me miss the era of muscle cars/sports cars. Course, a car enthusiast once told me the Vettes and Trans Ams of this period were classics for their engines and not so much the body. Even by then, car bodies were going to plastic and rubber instead of metal. And older viewers like me can certainly empathize with the underpaid high school shop teacher who has to get involved with shady characters to feed his family.
I'm a bit biased because my first car was a 1979 Trans Am. The second-generation Firebirds were the best as far as looks and the late 70s and early 80s Corvettes are by far the best looking vettes.
Other way around…one’s from this period are desirable for their styling. Vettes, firebirds, and Camaros of this era were complete dogs in the performance department. After ‘71 or so everything got robbed of power for better economy and emissions. Typical c3 vette from the late 70s only made around 190 or so horsepower at the wheels. A small fraction of the performance from a decade earlier.

This was one of the first films I remember watching on HBO in 1979. I was five years old and because of Star Wars, I ended up watching this Mark Hamill movie a bunch of times. Corvette Summer is a fun little coming of age film, very much of its time. Three years later, the same writers, producer and director would make Dragonslayer.

A different world back then. Incredible how fast things change. 70s America seem like it was a fun and adventurous time to be alive. More dangers and risks, but that's probably part of what made it more fun. Wish I had gotten to live it. You can tell by the movies, music and fashion that came from that era that there was just a vibe. Like the skies were amber and everything was so styled out.
I seen this at the Drive-inn here in Australia when I was 17, there was a lot of Rev-Head movies back then in the late 70's

It’s interesting to note that the villain in Corvette Summer, Kim Milford, also played in a low budget sci-fi movie called “Laser Blast” that was filmed about the same time. In the movie, a billboard for Star Wars gets blown up. Also there was a comment made in the movie about Star Wars fans. I’ve seen Corvette Summer a couple of times since I was a kid but only made the connection after seeing it here.

My favorite part: EVERYTHING!! This flick had it all... Comedy, Drama, Suspense, Action, Romance, and a MESSAGE!!
I was casually watching this "Corvette Summer" film and along the way realised that there's something special about this film. I haven't yet caught what it is bc I didn't focus well on it. I read synopsis but felt dissapointed. I will look again to solve my own 'mystery.'
I was 18 when this came out. I had forgotten all about it till it showed up in my feed. Those were some great times way back then. Cool cars, cool music and hot hairy women. If you know, then you know.
When i was about 7 years old, my dad and I started watching this movie. I was allowed to watch right up to the part where the car was stolen, but then I had to go to bed. My dad told me the next day how it ended, but I've actually gotten to see the entire movie until just now. I'm pretty sure this movie is the reason I love C3 corvettes to this very day.
