CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jack (Kurt Russell) goes in disguise to a Chinese brothel to rescue Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), but meets Lightning (James Pax).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Playing in a manner that can be conservatively described as larger than life, Kurt Russell plays a macho truck driver who agrees to go to the San Francisco airport and pick up his friend's (Dennis Dun) fiancee (Suzee Pai, freshly arrived from China. Suddenly, a gang of Chinatown toughs kidnap the girl right before Russell's eyes. After a wild chase sequence, Russell discovers that the girl has been abducted by a genuine, bonafide sorceror (James Hong), the ghost of a 3000 year old warlord. And that's just for starters.

Kurt Russel: damn underrated actor.
The guy is well respected in a somewhat niche market...those of us who grew up with John Carpenter and such horror and action like Big Trouble, The Thing, and Escape From New York know him as one of the greats, he just never quite crossed into the mainstream consciousness as solidly as he deserved. Bruce Campbell is another, he touched into the mainstream when he hit Burn Notice a bit, but he was never really a blockbuster triple A name.
That's kind of changing a bit mind you, I watched all this shit and was a HUGE Anime fan way back in the late 80's when Akira, Fist of the North Star, Ghost in the Shell and so on hit the scene and I had maybe one other friend in high school into that stuff...now it seems everyone and their grandmother is an Otaku singing the praises of Akira and lower budget horror/action thanks to the internet...nice to see people only a select group respected being recognized (even if it's a bit late) for their skills...
Dude shoulda won best actor 1986....
There were very few directors that truly knew Kurt Russell's talent and John Carpenter was one of them.
Have to disagree there...Kurt Russell has always been widely regarded as one of the greats.
My favorite actor. From Snake Bliskin to Santa Claus in Christmas Chronicle. He is the best. This is one of my favorite movies. I can watch it over and over and never get tired of it.
This channel always cuts the wrong part of the clip. They missed the best part where he says: "Good evening madame, how do you do. Henry Swanson's my name, and excitement is my game."

The scene with Jack and the call girl went over my head as a kid. Just thought he was making small talk and she told him to take his tie off because he was boring her and she wanted to get to business. Didn’t realize Jack was fishing for info and the girl was getting suspicious that he might be a cop so she told him to take off his tie because it could have a wire.

I just love that small look on Kurt Russell’s face just before he punches the first guy. It’s a sort of “This is nonsense, I’m just going to floor this jerk” kinda face. In fact he uses it several times throughout the movie, love it!

There are certain movies that just did a certain thing the best you'd ever seen, and nothing ever comes close. The part when Jack Burton punches Rain is SO good. It's especially awesome because it doesn't employ the less interesting "you break your hand on my iron jaw" technique.
The punch lands. The physics of it still make his head jerk back from the blow. It just doesn't phase him.
And the speed of his return to original position matched with the intensity of his expression (and even Jack's "alright, whelp...gave it my best" smile/nod) elevate it to a level of badassedness I just haven't ever seen matched in the same way.
Another scene I'd always felt this way about was when Darth Vader lifts the rebel trooper off the ground in the beginning of "A New Hope". The only other practical effect scene that had the same physical menace and power was Khann from Star Trek: Wrath of Khann when he one-hand lifts Checkov of the ground.
So awesome.
