Wow, thanks for this point. I know both ways of tossing and I’ve struggled with alternating between the two. I should commit to the topspin because it is more relaxing to me.
Kick serve. Great channel tennis coaching. Wished I found your channel a few years ago. This is one of the greatness of new social media CZcams in adding value to our tennis game. 🎉❤
After 67 years on this planet and cancer survivor, my serve finally came together this week. So many things I had to figure out …. how to stand and face the court, the bending of the knees, where I should toss the ball, how to toss the ball, what part of my right arm attacks the ball. My serve eluded me for over 40 years. The toss and how to toss the ball was the last element that I needed to figure out. And figure it out I did. For 1st/slice serve out front and slightly to the right. And for kick serve, above and almost behind my head !
Congrats! The tennis serve is among the most difficult motions in all of sports, getting to a point where you can confidently land a first serve is a massive achievement.
Last week, it felt marvelous. Smooth fluid motion and this week not c so much. I usually use prorated flat serve. I try to match pronation with contact. Good luck. I hope it sticks for you 😊
I feel serve is the hardest aspect of the game. So many elements you have to get right. I think I finally got a good formula but haven't tested it much in competition. Its starts with the ball toss. I use a little kick on my 1st serve for safety and get the point started and its more consistent however, couple people kept telling me to toss way in front and throw your body into the court - which felt unatural. I also had platform stance so I feel unblanced and then swicthed to pinpoint. congrats on finding your formula that works
Maybe I’m wrong but I think another benefit of the second one is that it’s easier to disguise your serve since it’s already in an ideal sport for a kick serve but you also have trained yourself to hit your slice and flat serves with it.
Hi, I prefer the second one, it's perfect for me because I have 90% of first serve in and better than that my oponentes always tell me that is very difficult to understand where the ball goes and how much kick does the ball take.
As a lefty.. slice and top spin serve work good for me, but both have a slight toss in front to gain pace as body moves forward into the ball strike. It’s unusual to get 3-4 double faults
Somehow my most consistent serve is a slice serve. But then again I’m a 3.0 trying to improve since forever. Looking forward to your videos to gain more insights!
There is nothing quite as satisfying, as hitting an all-out flat first serve just right, you know it will be an ace before the ball even leaves your strings, even though doing this will erode your percantage
I think I'd go with the second one. I'd rather increase my first serve percentage and lose up to 20% of my flat serve velocity. Because if you can go from say 50% in with flat to 75% with a little spin it's worth it in my book because any service winners or aces you lose you can eventually make up with placement if you keep practicing.
First...right as knige edge thus serve if its accurate cannot be returned easily or without a weak ball make you approach the net... Also its mote impressive if its really strong..
Im short so lack powerful serves so this is my go-to. As a lefty, my first serve is almost always a slice, a real heavy slice. On the deuce side it often sends the opponent way off the court to return it. Faulting that, my second serve is a safe kick serve. High chance of going in but not very strong.
Hi Patrick, First of all, thanks for sharing all the valuable lessons! Greatly appreciated! Just a quick question: Is there a separate channel for discussing racquets and strings? Thanks! Frederick
I mostly hit kick serves as a first serve, but I'll throw in a flat or even a slice serve. Good movement on the ball gives me a fair amount of weaker returns and I tend to get a really high first serve percentage with it. The occasional change in spin and pace will tend to keep people from guessing too much -- well, it works with people like me. I'm sure I telegraph things way too much for higher level players.😂
Idk why he says stuff like this. You should learn to hit all three serves from one ball toss. I'm assuming he knows better and trying to give advice for lower level players, but imo even as a beginner you should learn all 3 serves off one ball toss instead of having to break the habit later on
How interesting! I have recently switched to serving what I thought was TWO second serves. For safety mainly, to reduce double faults. But was surprised by several of my opponents congratulating me on my strong FIRST serve. So I guess unbeknown to me I am serving a Kick First Serve?
ho 13 anni e usualmente servo in flat o in slice il primo servizio, soprattutto perchè solo quelli che mi vengono meglio,il kick lo uso solo per la seconda palla r devo ancora migliorarlo
Patrick, I think BOTH serves are important, and they must be developed, so that they are like tools in your toolkit. And when you need to use them, after practising them so much, you have them available. And this is my point; you should be able to use them at different times, to address either stressful situations for yourself, OR, to try to damage your opponent and keep them guessing, and cause stress to THEM.
I prefer 20 cm right off the head 20 cm above head level. Short toss and hit the ball with slight flick of the wrist. Tiny motion. Hard to read for the oponent. Dead on the target 🎯. Same for the return. Just a touch.
I think you mean "topspin" not kick. In america we call it topspin not kick. Kick is for a Kickserve, which bounces high and sideways. Tospin bouces high and forward So Yes, I use Topspin slice or Hybrid for the first serve. I just want to clarify that
Kick serve for first serve as well... Not easy for club level players to tackle the spin that easily. Takes less effort as well once the technique is mastered.
Does Federer really hit his 1st serves with any kick? Looks like he just hits it with slice and a lot of pace. Yes, he tosses closer to his body like Rune, but he also doesn't move forward into the court as much so he's still making contact at the same position that Kyrgios/Medvedev etc do when they toss out in front.
I've yet to come across a player with total control, variety, and consistency that lacked pace. Its the least imoortant factor in an outstanding serve package.
Lost all respect for Mouritoglu when he said tennis needs to be like basketball and also when he stupidly said one hand backhands arent any good. Lazy coach
Every serve that gets in, is good for us! 😢
Don’t say us bc not everyone thinks the way you do
@@georgezazueta61 no fucking shit Sherlock
Being short, I need all the help I can get. Kick serves all the way.
Same here.
Sh*t, I hit flat
Wow, thanks for this point. I know both ways of tossing and I’ve struggled with alternating between the two. I should commit to the topspin because it is more relaxing to me.
I prefer the one who scores, unfortunetly not often in my case... Always a pleasure to take an advice from you. Thanks 😉

@@user-be5qg7mr1s It really is ridiculous how different serving during a match is, than in practice, given how it is essentially a single-player task.
Medvedev's technic has helped me so much develop mine so definitely these kinds serves
Personally as a noob I can confidently say I prefer the serve that gets the ball to the other side
All kind of effects are good, depending on the situation.
Using boths for first or second serve is the better way to be unpredictible i think.
Maybe I’m wrong but I think another benefit of the second one is that it’s easier to disguise your serve since it’s already in an ideal sport for a kick serve but you also have trained yourself to hit your slice and flat serves with it.

Somehow my most consistent serve is a slice serve. But then again I’m a 3.0 trying to improve since forever.

I would love to hit the kick more but the flat feels more natural to me so I have more confidence going for that
There is nothing quite as satisfying, as hitting an all-out flat first serve just right, you know it will be an ace before the ball even leaves your strings, even though doing this will erode your percantage
the serve that I prefer is the one that actually goes in the box.
I think I'd go with the second one. I'd rather increase my first serve percentage and lose up to 20% of my flat serve velocity. For me who can't serve well, both are excellent....
Under hand serve
for me, I find while hitting a full flat or kick is more effective at throwing off opponents, kick is more consistent and potent
I learn tennis and my caoch says that if it's basically not good and i go with the classic because it helps with push and power
I hit something in between in order, like you said, to put more services in the box
I don't care, please just get in - my prayers every time I serve 😂
Hi Patrick, First of all, thanks for sharing all the valuable lessons! Greatly appreciated! Just a quick question: Is there a separate channel for discussing racquets and strings? Thanks! Frederick
Pete Sampras is a very good example for the perfect serve you've mentioned. You would like to have an analysis with that!
Yeah, honestly don't know why he didn't use Pete as an example: the perfect combination of pace and spin.
I prefer😊 the first one as it gives you more power
To hit the ball.
I hit kick 1st and 2nd. I rarely double fault and I can usually hit my spot on the court.
Go tell this to Rune... He double faulted so much today
I mostly hit kick serves as a first serve, but I'll throw in a flat or even a slice serve. On clay mostly percentage. Hardcourt or indoor also flat.
i mostly hit flat serves as a first serve, leaving the kick serve for a second serve. probably works 50% of the time for first serves.
I use flat
I prefer flat slice serves

He really put Rune and Federer in the same sentence 👀
😂
he is promoting his own student lmao

Rune hits unreturnable serve and big forehand.
I prefer serving an Ace!
Should you not disguise your serve with the same tossing location?
Doesnt roger federer use both types? Kick serve is a safe serve used for second serves
Flat. Love that shit.
Hello Patrick, what kind of serve to hit if you have tennis elbow injury?
Underarm or Kyrgios type . :)
Fedarar
I’m a taller individual, so I can hit flat without being punished as much percentage wise
Flat bombs with crazy kick. Aka Pistol Pete.
I will prefer a kick serve
Worst part of my serve….the toss😩😀🤷🏻♂️
What about slice serves?
I serve flat and hard But the 1st serve percentage is low.
I prefer flat
I heard Serena and I was like I PREFER THE SERVE OF THE ALL TIME ORIGINAL GOAT
you mean the goat for women? not men. There's an important distinction
En français Patrick !!
I am short so kick is my key
No feeling quite like acing a flat serve
Kick serve
Spin
What is the ideal toss for a junior player who is 1.5m tall?
Kick. You have neither the angle nor the power to make a flat first serve work.
I've yet to come across a player with total control, variety, and consistency that lacked pace. Its the least imoortant factor in an outstanding serve package.
20 cm to the right of the head?
Strenght. Pay that editor good.
Good explanation and good technique, never disappoints
Also curious why did you join CZcams ?
Pin ?
Flat
Number 22222
20cm cannot possibly apply to 1.70m and 1.90m players.

Mix it up.

Can u pick a ball and show
flat
