Digging into one of my favorite and lesser known Jaco Pastorius solos from 1975's "Bright Size Life" album with Pat Metheny. I'll get into Jaco's career surrounding this session, analyze the solo itself, and answer a question I've had for years: can we even consider this a solo? I'll tell you why it's one of the most important things Jaco ever played and how he got his signature sound on it.
Many thanks to the great bassist Mark Egan for the assist on this one!

The Havona solo is not only one of the best bass solos ever, not only one of the best solos in jazz ever, but simply one of the best solos of any instrument, any genre...period.
The piece is so excited (like molten gold) it emits light.
I'm willing to bet that Jaco composed that solo, as he did his solo for Teentown. That doesn't take anything away from his creativity.
It is beautiful.
He made it up then he wrote it.......Never heard nothing like it. I think Jaco was some kind of AI. They should've cloned him when they had the chance.
I'm a 53-year-old bass player and I've been telling young bass players this very thing for years. Thank you for stating this point with such clarity.
me too, a 53 year old bass player who loves this album and had it in high school
What point? 🤷♂️
This album changed my life, what Pat/Jaco/Bob did together is some of the greatest music ever made. and according to Pat, what they did live was a hundred times better than the record - which is terrifying to think about
👍
I’m not a metheny expert… iirc they had a musician / producer who pushed the BSL LP to happen, bc they were playing out a lot and probably gonna love onto new material without getting it down properly on record
i enjoy these videos so much. I'm a guitar player, but I have an appreciation for bass. Whenever I have the privilege of playing with a bass player, I try to listen to them as much as possible. This channel is broadening my horizons musically, as I'm learning all sorts of stuff that bass players think about when they're playing. It's surprisingly relevant to what I do
Seems there’s a bunch of guitarists coming here. I’m a guitarist-turned-composer, and I agree with your sentiment. @PDBass has gotten me to relisten to songs with new ears and to appreciate the bass even more than I already had.
An amazing guitar player who I also played with named Sawn lane said concerning Jaco... " its sad that society makes provision and supports
people who have needs but never makes provision or takes care of People like Jaco who needed help in many other ways".. Insted he walked into a bar and was beaten by a bouncer... then later died.. WHat a sad way for someone so talented to die.
@@doyourownresearch7297 I wasn't formally trained in music, either on guitar nor bass. I'm your typical seventies rock guy that switched to bass because I was the weakest guitarist in the band. The difference in my path was that I kept learning and by the end of the 1970's knew that Rock bass playing had devolved and that many guitar players who weren't all that swift themselves assumed and expected bassists only played roots, (I'm sorry for the run on sentence).
@@doyourownresearch7297 Nothing just previously I tended to listen more closely to the drummer
I have the same response, and like you I’m a guitarist. Thanks so very much Paul. You’re drawing six stringers to the master class 😎
"Bright Size Life" is a masterpiece. Wish that trio had recorded more.
I played with Jaco Pastorious. He started off as a Drummer but was truly incredible as a bassist. Unfortunately he was difficult to control
but once he calmed down he was extremely exciting to perform with.
This video is great for musicians and well done.
Will certainly Subscribe.
Jaco gave us so much man. I watch his live performance of Dolphin Dance once a week.

Me too!
@@gravitydrums1391 Thanks for telling that. It's gratifying to hear Shawn Lane speak well of Jaco. Shawn himself was an incredibly gifted, unique, and important artist with a difficult cross to bear. Both men did more than their share of suffering.
@@nunyabidnez7857 That is so true.
Thank you for reminding me of Bright Size Life and introducing me to other versions of this piece. I had no idea they existed! Your channel consistently brings me so much joy.

Awesome video! And your right,as Jaco said in his instructional video the "most important thing to learn is the melody of the tune".
I've been thinking I must do that! Just a beginner working on autnn leaves but collecting versions of it to get thr melody.
I gotta give it up to pdbass for exposing me to my go-to chill music. Showers, choring, closing time at work, it's this song that drags me through it as gently as possible.
Not a bass player, but just wanted to say how much I love your channel. Always fascinating analysis and lots of great music and playing.

Thank you for posting this. This track and Jaco's playing and sound on it has accompanied me for nearly 50 years. One of the most beautiful albums.
Great video, Paul. As a guitarist and bassist (that played quite a bit of fretless) you are so right when you say, "Learn to play the melody." And may I predicate, in all the keys. Because you never know when, at a jam session, someone calls "Autumn Leaves" in Db. (You know it's gonna happen!)
BTW, you killed the melody on B&G! Well done, sir!

In the late 1980s, when I was 1st getting to know a now friend, he was (still is) a jazz drummer. He asked what jazz groups I liked, and I named Weather Report first off and also Pat Metheny. I had no idea who Jaco Pastorious was then and didn't learn about him until years, actually decades, later. My goodness!! What other-worldly talent!
This is another great tune in which Jaco's part just kicks it into goosebump territory. Chills every time.
I get it and you’re right! It was part of the composition, but without question Jaco, being Jaco, had to come out on top, and bring the bass forward, which is always a beautiful thing! He change the way we all look at what a base was in a composition!
“Jaco will always be one of the great communicators of music.” Perfect.
Jaco is such a giant in sound not just music. Listening to his playing is like being wrapped in a warm blanket. It envelopes you and takes you home. Pure perfection.
Just when I thought I had a good understanding of this melody from Jaco, you come with additional knowledge and insight I did not know. Thanks for always dropping the knowledge.

Your "lesson learned" at the end of this video is so great... and served with CONVICTION!... Learn (and play the hell out of, with CLARITY) the MEL-O-DY!
This is the best and simplest lesson I've had in a while. Thanks!
Your final comment on melody is spot on and I couldn't agree with you more.
Fascinating backstory and musical education. I'm not a musician, but videos like this deepen my appreciation of the skill, talent, and creativity it takes to perform great music of any genre.
It's 1:15 AM and I'm just scrolling through my CZcams algorithm trying to get tired enough to go to bed. This came up and the title intrigued me as I'm a huge Metheny and Jaco fan not to mention a frustrated jazz guitarist.
When I listened to Jaco play through that beautiful phrasing (which I've never heard before) I immediately thought of Metheny. It was the note choices that really stood out to me. It just sounds...well...Metheny. So, it was no surprise to hear what you learned about it.
I've never seen your channel before but I'll be looking forward to seeing more!
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks PDBASS. You’re awesome. As a teacher-everything.
Beautifully put together, I couldn’t agree more about melody. A reason I loved Weather Report so much and then when Jaco joined it was the ultimate 🙏❤️
These videos are a fantastic resource. Thank you so much for creating and sharing them, Bassman 😊🎶🎵❤️✌️
Such a great video. Thank you. Your voice on fretless is beautiful, too.
Great lesson, thank you. Peace and love.
This just shows the beauty of Jazz, when it’s so hard to figure out if the parts were improvised or prewritten. The flow is the same.
amazing album and amazing episode..thanks for that. that album is still in my playing collection after all thoose years, it's not bass, it's not guitar,it's not jazz..it's music to listen
I found myself sat next to Tony Bacon in the Circle at Bristol’s Colston Hall.
We were watching Weather Report play and raved at the music, Jaco in particular.
Tony said that he had just been interviewing Jaco.
Like "Wow !! Really ?" or words to that effect.
He signed me up to two years free subscription to his magazine.
Thank you Tony. 👍
Nice guy.
First of all, I Love what you do for the bass community Paul, as well as your contributions locally. I never knew those things about Jaco. It was a real eye opener. Keep up the wonderful work!!
I would have guessed that.
It really sounds like a Methenyesque melody.
Wonderful video and research.
I had no idea about the doubling
i guess when we hear a sick line from jaco we accept it like 'well yeah, its jaco'. it is a bit shocking to hear he didnt write that masterpiece line but to me, amongst pat's long, long list of skills and accolades is his ability to write melodic lines like this. all my favorite tunes from pat have some amazing line like this that sucks me in (though usually on the guitar, and not at the end of the song!). i remember hearing pat say you could throw a garbage can down a flight of stairs and transpose it - its a melody. this guy thinks differently about melody then most of us, save perhaps the best song writers in the world.

a very PM melody
Great timing! I was just looking up Jaco stuff last night, but wasn't aware of this. Thank you. So happy I got a chance to see him with Weather Report. They were incredible live.
I’ll always be thankful I saw them live on several occasions too.

I kid you not, I listened to this last night. Absolutely great choice! So maybe fantastic information in this video. You have one of the most generous channels on CZcams.

Nicely done. I studied bass back in the early 80's then put it down. I retired last year and I'm back at it again. I remember Jaco. He is my favorite and sadly missed. I remember adding harmonics to my playing after hearing him. Thanks for the inspiration. It has been long overdue.

@@gravitydrums1391 It's very sad. People always bitch about the police using excessive force, what about bouncers? You mean to tell me a steroid pumped goon can't stop short of killing someone out of line in a bar? I recall 2 instances where it back fired. Once when Mike Tyson showed up to rescue his friends, and a other time when Bruce Smith tossed a few around like rag dolls. I heard about both but didn't witness either.
Thank you for this post, informative and so awe-inspiring!
This channel is amazing!
Thanks pdbass!
i knew you were going there - absolutely beautiful
Man You're a great Instructor, I've never seen Bass Licks as Clear as you Display it, you translate the Greats and Make it seem Effortless! Thank you!!!!
Amen to your comments on melodies!
I've been listening to music constantly since I was 4 (1984), played trumpet at 10, started playing bass at 20, and listened to tons and tons of a bunch of genres thru pop, rock, punk, disco, electronic over the decades, and specially prog rock, heavy metal AND jazz. All of this to say that Bright Size Life and Midwestern Dreams are two of the most beautifull songs I ever heard in my life.
Thank for this song I love Matheny & Jaco
Top notch as always Paul
Utterly sublme and a favourite Jaco track , wonderful Sir
Thanks again Paul for another wonderful deep dive into Jaco's work and reiterating his idea of learning as many melodies as you can. I still listen to Bright Size Life all the time...fantastic record!!!

Your tone and timing were exquisite on this tune, Paul. It brought back so many beautiful memories of Jaco. Thank you this wonderful presentation!

Well, that does it for me. Your channel is unique and your knowledge and ability to perform brings the information to life. This was a brilliant look into composition and execution and I thank you for that. As Bassists, we all know Jaco and how he exploded onto the scene but this in depth look at his approach was something I never heard before. You're the Rick Beato for Bassists. Don't ever stop. We need this information to help us all expand our own playing. Thank you for posting. Best to all.

Thank you, again. Metheny & Jaco's haunting, reflective music got me through rough times as a college student, and you brought those memories back.
Nice! A new upload!
Excellent as always
I love that album from Pat Metheny. I bought it when I was about 15. Simply brilliant. And Jaco's album was also great.
Always blessed with you comments and music👍
Very interesting and deep your analyses. Thanks for creating such a content!!!
O boy, this brings me way back. I should have never got those 'Walking bass clases' where I totally lost the feel with the bass. I remember this, this is what I loved. 21 years ago..... 46yo now
🙏🏽 Amazing clip...as always.
I'm a drummer and just came across this because I love Jaco. The last part of this awesome video says it all; learn melodies! Even if, or perhaps more importantly, you're a drummer.
Great video! Paul is doing a great job of educating people about the way it is. He not only picks great material to choose from (JACO) but does the research to make sure it is correct. It definitely sounds like a Metheny melody without question. This was a big part of John Lennon's classic sound - singing the melody twice as everyone knows. There's nothing like the sound of the same Voice twice because it's a perfect match and makes it stand out more uniquely than say two people singing the same harmonies. Here Jaco's using the same technique, His voice - the bass - his DNA and only his - which makes it sounds so gorgeous! Beautiful playing Paul!

This guy knows his stuff. Jaco was a one of one player. It's almost unimaginable what he might of done had he not had an untimely demise, and dealing with issues while he was here. Among my favorite bassists, along with Ron Carter, and James Jamerson
New subscriber here. Love your content so much brother. I have to sing while playing bass & I always feel like I’m learning ways to develop when I watch your vids. Cheers from the U.K. 👍🏻
This is some great information. I had no clue Jaco didn't use pedals. Especially with Weather Report. Thanks for all your knowledge bro.
No "pedals," but he used one or more MXR digital delays - rack-mount units or close to it in format - and the built-in distortion effect of the Acoustic 360 amps. Many times he'd run dry through one 360 and through the MXR into a second 360; that's a huge sound right there. Also used the MXR as a looper for his solos ("Slang" on Weather Report's 8:30).
THIS IS AWESOME!!!
Such a great video. Definitely one of my favorites on that record! Thank you!
Yes you picked an excellent "solo" and I love his playing on that album.

Very nice tone yourself there. Well done. 😎
Nice arc! This video is a satisfying solo.
I've always loved this slow one, such warm movement, plus I never knew that the chorused sound was achieved that way and I've been listening to JP for nearly 3 decades! Thank you
One of my top 5 favorite albums and great, insightful content as usual.
Thank you so much!

Beautifully explained and presented Paul, thank you!
Wow Paul, so interesting as usual. I've sat on Jaco too long, I need to go on aJaco binge now, I see the light!
There is also another version of this magnificent piece by Pat Metheny, from the year 1977 included in the Gary Burton Quartet, in which the great German bass player Eberhar Weber plays bass, great version.
Ahhhhh my fav is the solo in "(Used to Be A) Cha Cha" debut solo album. This solo melts my heart and cuts to the core.
You're correct sir, his greatest recorded solo! And with that early chocolatey, dark upright tone. Amazing.
Very nice analysis! Your love of music really comes through.
Timeless stuff, brother! Thanks for sharing. All the best! 🖖🏻
Bravo! Great content and analysis as usual!!! I really like how you sounded playing!!! GOD Bless You!!!
Simply brilliant analysis of a wonderful tune. Concludes with advice anyone would be foolish to ignore.
Well explained. Thanks so much !!!
Jaco is the bass player that I caught late in life until I understood him as a force of nature, Like Jimy Hendrix on guitar. Great video.
Thank you. Thank you so much. "Some mighty valuable education you doing here". Truly.
This channel highlights the bass guitar and the amazing bass players that bring this instrument to life...💯👍

Dam thanks 👍 dude you showing just how good he was plus these other bass players just don't know back at this time there were very real bases players back then as well as before him too
Beautiful tune. Great line by Jaco. Even without the doubled part of it, it sounds great.
Another great video 👊😎
Love the double line effect
Great video on one of my favourite tunes. Thanks man!
I always enjoy your essays, Paul, but I particularly dig this one because of its insights into the work of two of my favourite musicians: Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius.
Thanks! ☝️😎
Wow, I haven't listened to Mark Egan in years, thanks for the reminder.
I love that your channel tackles breaking down fusion and soul tracks, most similar break downs are very pop heavy
Thanks, man! I'm very musical in my soul, but I'm not a "musician." I enjoy your channel.
HAVONA! Knew the answer as soon as you posed it. Great vid! Thanks a million.
I was a freshman in college in the music dept. playing the mighty doghouse. They let me use a 7/8 German bass they had. I’m only 5’8” and basically weigh nothing. That bass had a powerful sound though! Anyway it was the year that Jacos first solo record hit.
All the jazz guys in the music department were blown away and flabbergasted at the same time. It was a come to Jesus moment for all of us bass players. Every once in awhile when I need my butt kicked, I put on some music that Jaco played on. Then I practice.
I had a short stint in Nashville and was lucky to meet and play with some great people. Also recorded a bit. Jaco influenced all of us even if we tried to run away from it. Thank you for what you do. I’m digging it!
My favorite from jaco. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉. I knew it. The whole groove swings and bounces. Sick
