I've been reacting to Prince now over the past few months, and I'm absolutely loving it!! After reacting to random songs and performances - of which, there are SO many lol, I was getting all confused about what was when etc..

Love the deep dive into Prince's discography. Glad someone has done it and done it so well. Also wanted to mention that EVERYTHING you hear on Prince's first two albums is just him. No other producer, no other musician (no backing/studio band) no backup vocals. It's ALL Prince
Only one other person on CZcams took the time to listen to every Prince album release from beginning to end. SO glad you did this! And keep in mind...there are sooo many outtakes, re-imaginings of known tracks and live performances that yes, you could be here until 2028. The man gave us his all, literally. A musician's musician. If you continue you will see the unfolding of an incredible artist. Enjoy the ride! Thank you so much.
Great reactions! It didn't receive more attention then because the disco era was still happening, so people were still looking for dance music. "Soft and Wet" was a hit because it was a great song and danceable. I highly recommend you watch his live 1985 performance of "America" where he destroys the stage. Also, his Dortmund piano medley is a cool change of pace or "If I Was Your Girlfriend" from the concert movie, "Sign 'O The Times".
So blue. As a teenager? Mind blowing.

I love this album and so happy you were receptive to it. It's incredible what he accomplished here, recording at ages 19-20. Enjoy the journey! I'll keep an eye out for future reactions to his other albums. It's a joy hearing them again with others who can appreciate the vibe.
The stories are that big groups like the Rolling Stones and others would come in, hear this playing amd always ask who is the band. They thought it was studio musicians and were alwsys shocked to hear it was All Prince
He only put the band together when he went on tour and needed musicians and dont forget he did all this with no experience and was 19
This album is like a spiritual album for me. Got me through some serious tough times, my parents were obsessed with this album and always played it since i was a baby. Prince's first song "for you" is so beautiful and was a love letter to his supporters & the world. "All this love & more is for you, With love, sincerity & deepest care. My life with you i share" Prince was talking to us and we know that's true by everything he sacrificed later his career. Waking up an entire industry before ANY artist to own their masters, independence and work. We have the receipts with people like DMX, PINK, NAS, ALICIA KEYS. All of them have spoken publicly about Prince privately talking to them about how the industry is robbing them & who those people actually are.
People don't know how much Prince went through in the business. When he started exposing the industry & the mainstream radio stations stopped playing his music & then started playing it again when he passed. VERY ODD. Some artists were even told by management not to mention him as an inspiration that's how deep this goes. Even Prince's life being threatened but that too deep down the rabbit hole lol but this reaction was such a vibe! PS. You look amazing with afro btw. No CAP. 😎
So underrated , it compares to Bee Gees Best

1978. Prince was 1979.
His first album was actually recorded in 1977, released in the spring of 1978. The second Album "Prince" released in the fall of 1979.

Interesting to note, Maurice White ,who you read they wanted to produce is the star of Earth Wind &FIRE, SHO WAS GIANT then and in later years , Prince wrote a song called Race which was recorded by Earth Wind &FIRE, and Prince performed it often live.
Prince broke records when signing with Warner Brothers in '77-'78. He was in his late teens and was being compared to Stevie Wonder and Sly Stone already. He went on to prove his instumental and vocal abilities as well as writing and production. It's all him! The 16 vocal tracks on the song For You was inspired. The guitar work on I'm Your is blistering! Great 1st album! Thank you for your attention!💜
His earlier albums sold a lot after Purple Rain was released and people went back to explore them. This one didn't sell very much after it's initial release.

Looking forward to you continuing your Prince journey. Personally I feel his debut album isn't "real" Prince, as he's clearly a bit unsure what direction he wanted to go in. It's a bit safe and bland for me, apart from the banging 'I'm Yours'. The second (self titled) album, Dirty Mind and Controversy are the early albums that I can really get into.
