Safin beat Federer in the semifinals, the final was Safin - Hewitt. I remember that because I loved both players but that semifinal was the only match in Roger's career where I didn't cheer him on.
There that speed that old Pete Sampras was talking about! WTF of course Roger was fast, he was 23 years old at the time. These announcers are so stupid and say the most ridiculous things! Agassi was fast at 23 years old too! Agassi in his prime would have played a lot better than he did at 35 years old! Agassi in his prime only had one guy that could beat him consistently, and that was Pete Sampras, and that was because Pete was a gifted athlete along with being a world class champion tennis player!
that was 2002 or 2003, after Masters Finals of 2003 Roger won everything against Andre. One of the most underrated macth of all time IMHO and match that changed the game forever (2003 final of masters final that is).
@@jbolanowski1 , Yeah but Agassi win allready what he want allready , Nothing to prove to himself anymore..as 3 decades TOP 10 as well..being The oldest number 1 in the world 🌎 for 15 years..And
@@richardkrivik7032 sure he did. Nothing against Andre there. I wasn't trying to diminish Agassi. The reason why it was so important (the 2003 Masters Final) IMO is because A. that was beginning of true Fed domination and B. that was the match when Roger fully committed to the baseline. He won it by playing Agassi-style. His WImbldeon triumph couple months before that was still mostly due to S&V. After Roger decided to play against Andre from the baseline serve & volley was dead (not only for him, for everyone on top of the game).

Mats Wilander predicted it right about Safin's chance against Federer in this tournament.👍
Safin is the only one to beat a peak Federer in a non clay slam. I am counting 2004-2007 as peak Federer.
Fed’s peak was longer than that, the thing is Nadal and Djokovic began to come into their own after 2007

1:11:17 Wilander called it. Safin was the one to stop Federer and for all the reasons he stated.
1:10:55 ....interview with Wilander, excellent analysis, predicts Safin will give Federer trouble in final. I think he did.
