- If you are trying to convert less common video file formats on your mac computer like .avi, .mkv, .raw or .mpeg then you need a 3rd party program like VLC media player. Check out this quick tutorial for how to use VLC to convert files. Also you can see how to solve issues that I encountered like when the sound is missing from the video.
worked great, kept audio, thank you
Wow! This was really helpful. I was having the exact same problem not being able to include sound with the exported file. I was thrashing around aimlessly trying to figure it out. You saved me!
I'm glad you got it working!
Thank you--very helpful! I needed to select audio: AAC for the audio to work/ FYI
This helped me out a lot! You’re the man! Thank you!!
One of the best tutorial videos on this subject, thank you . . .
Wow that really encourages me to keep making these! Thanks.
He’s straight up right! I literally clicked everyone’s video on this topic looking for yours i spent the whole day yesterday looking for this video then I couldn’t find it I woke up today and tried again it was the first one’ I got lucky thanks so much!
Under customize and Audio codec, change the codec to "MPEG 4 Audio (AAC)." I've converted a ton of .mxf files and this works without the extra conversion step.
Helpful video, thanks man
That is great. Avdshare Video Converter also works great to convert video files, audio files on Mac and Windows.
Thank you so much, your vid was a great help
This helped me so much! Thank you!
You are very welcome!
Thank you so much. You’re the best!!
omg thanks so much haha I've been looking for a solution for a full day! thanks so much :)
Glad I could help!
Thanks for creating this video. You saved me a shit ton of aggravation my friend. Your suggestion to make the adjustment under "customize/audio codec/keep original audio track worked for every file. The company that converted my Hi 8 Videos created VTS files that play fine in VLC but I couldn't share or edit them at all on my Mac. Merci!!!
Brilliant - thanks so much! :)
This helped a lot thanks!
Glad to hear!
Thank you for this man. I needed to retrieve old audio from some historic church DVDs and this helped quite a bit. Fortunately for me the audio did work when adding audio for the export example.
Great!
Thanks so much I now can edit my youtube videos !
Hey mate, great video and I thought you had solved all my issues. I did 6 videos exactly as you showed me to put them into FCP7 three of them worked perfect, the other three no matter what I do won't go into FCP. Getting getting unknown file no access no matter what I do with them I tried converting twice, one just the video and once just the sound. The CD convert was perfect but it still won't accept the video file. When I hit info on all the files they all read exactly the same. Sorry for long winded explanation, but any tips?
Thanks this helped so much!!
your very welcome, thanks for the idea!
@@dreamvr722 Thanks for helping me I really appreciate it!
I subbed and liked for that help

Can you please provide a tutorial or instructions on how to combine/sync the audio and video for iMovie novices like myself? My VOB file converted without the audio, as you said might happen, only to be stuck on this final step(s). I do have both the wav file and the m4v file ready to combine, thanks to your video covering that part beautifully.
Yes! Here it is: czcams.com/video/iFAsa274eng/video.html
If you're just trying to export audio IMovie can covert videos to mp3 and wav files. VLC just makes them sound crunchy for some reason
Good point. I'm focusing on getting rare video formats to work, but of course there are drawbacks to using vlc in some cases.
Thank you!
You bet!
Hi, just wondering, I've tried the VLC video convert menu once on Macbook air. It does work. However, during the video conversion, my mac fan makes some noise. I know it's the fan cooling down the processor. Is it normal or is it gonna ruin my mac air in the long run?
That is normal and the fan is preserving your computers ability to perform well. That is the advantage of having a fan, your computer won't overheat and throttle performance as quickly. Be proud you are now a power user!
Thanks for sharing. How can I get in touch with you?
Do you know if it´s possible to "batch"- convert videos? Like, convert multiple video-files at once? Have not figured that out yet by myself.
I also don't know yet. But that is an excellent idea for a tutorial, thanks!
I am stuck in Mexico for the next 5 days and I desperately need to convert a 8 gig file. I hope this works 🤞
Hey! Every time I try this my files save as MPEG-4 movie and can only be opened on Apple TV and I can't drag into iMovie or any other video software. Any idea where I'm going wrong?
for anyone reading this now, after you have saved it click in the name and change the extension to.mp4
How do you convert with higher res, your file was 4MB and I'm getting a similarly unsatisfactory result
The original file I was using was very small and crappy. The only way is to start with a higher resolution file. Or try using another program like the "remux" function in OBS screen capture software.
how to convert multiple files on mac?
Hi everyone, does anyone knows how to download CZcams Videos using VLC --»ON -» Mac? Thx upfront
Hi, I tried to convert a and old dvd I bought years ago, but there are only two folders (audio_ts and video.ts) after clicking on convert/stream. What am i doing wrong?
Hmm, I've never encountered that before. Sorry I guess I'm just as lost as you there.
it is still now showing the subtitles without the VLC downloaded....
Output file was very bright and not very good?
I wanted to convert an avi video file which is 40min long. Every time I try to convert it, vlc media player will convert the whole video to only 26sec, so just the first few seconds of the video are shown.
I have that problem too. I have hours long WMV files and they don't fully convert. I am thinking screen recording may be my only option at this point which will further downgrade the quality... I'm not paying for some converter programs for doing this only once in my life.. ughhh
technically, VLC can edit the two files together. just need to find where they hid the commands as everyone who does this uses windows!! sadly Imovie won't run on my Mojave mac for some reason (yes I have the version for mojave - Imovie 9)
Good to know. I've also figured out that OBS does a really good job converting the files I need with the remux button since I published this.
mine saves it as an apple tv file? 😭😭😭😭💀
Although it supposedly converted to mp4 the output still says mkv as it dies on your demo, so won’t play on my tv.
This is something you may need to play with, my file exported to m4v. If you are converting .mkv from obs try using the remux conversion button like I show in this video: czcams.com/video/foVpi6vdimA/video.html
Is it possible to convert multiple files at once?
I have the mac (apple silicon) version and i don't think it's possible to convert multiple files at once. sucks :( if someone knows how, i'm definitely interested to learn how.
I couldn't get this to work. I kept getting a message that the file already exist and I had to overwrite or keep existing file. Either way, VLC froze and I had to force quit.
This method might not work for you then. There are other ways to do this, for example you can upload the mkv to CZcams and redownload it as an mp4 file. OBS also has a function that allows you to output other file formats, but I myself haven't figured that out yet. Working on it.
I think you might just have to change the name of the file?
Mac OS: Right click>Get Info>Open With VLC> similar kinds…
Hi so when i record game play it dosent record the audio any ides why?
If you cannot separate out the audio using a VLC then that is probably an OBS issue. You have to tell it which places to record audio from (computer sound card, computer internal audio, computer mic audio).
@@dreamvr722 ok i tryed changing it in obs settings but in obs settings it says audio is disabled and i cant change it do you know how to fix it?
is this with aduio only or videos too?
VLC can do both. It can convert odd video formats to Mp4 which is a video container file. It can also convert video to common audio files (mp3 or .wav). I do both in the video, first mp4, then .wav
Hey if you wanted you can also go into obs settings and then change how the file comes out to a mp4 file so then you wont need vlc player to convert the videos its just something i found out now i thought it would be useful to know
@@justjamie5006 what's the obs settings?
If you change the Audio codec to "MPEG 4 Audio (AAC)" you should hear the audio and not have to convert the audio and video separately and combine them. You change this by clicking Customize, the click on the Audio tab, click on the arrows to the right of the codec and select "MPEG 4 Audio (AAC)".
Thanks for teaching me this!
@@dreamvr722 This doesn't work!
@@StewyStew-wq8dq this did not work for me either
Each product key for Video Converter Ultimate gives you access to great movie conversion features for the rest of your life. This software supports high-performance video encoding. This compresses the file size while maintaining high visual quality.
make no sense how did you download file so you can put in VLC????
Right I already had the file in a weird format. This video assumes the viewer has the same problem. Most videos you would download from the internet will be in mp4 and so you won't have this issue.
WTF!!! Batch files?? Doing it with audio CORRECTLY?? Batch files!!!!?!?
JUST CHANGE THE EXTENSION ONCE THE VIDEO IS DOWNLOADED AND VIOLA. YOU DONT HAVE TO DO ANY OF THIS
Interesting. I just tried changing a .avi file to .mp4 this way (just changing the extension in the title), and it didn't work in QuickTime or iMovie/fcpx. Am I missing a step?
