  • The Acura TL is a very appealing car, in my opinion. The TL, our Touring Luxury, still looks modern, somwhat sporty, and really does look great. However, is the Acura TL as reliable as you think? Does it hold up to its Honda reliability nameplate?
Well, the car does have issues and this video is solely dedicated to help you save money and headaches!

The automatic transmission problems were resolved in 2007 with the introduction of the transmission from the RL. I have an 2008 automatic with over 200,000 miles on it and the transmission works very smoothly. You just have to make sure you do the regular maintenance of replacing the transmission fluid and you shouldn't have any problem with an '07 or '08.
Also, keeping the lip on the wheel well free of dirt that retains moisture should take care of your rust issues there. I take a firm toothbrush and clean up underneath there.

  • @patrickcarrillo714
    @patrickcarrillo714 Před 3 lety +95

For the transmission the '04 to '06 models used the same automatic transmission from the '99 to 2003 TL same with the 99 to 2004 Honda Odyssey those automatic transmissions never failed to fail If you're going to buy one with an automatic look at the '07 to '08 model because for 07 to 08 Acura did a refresh And they Got rid of the TL's automatic transmission entirely and plopped in the Acura RL's automatic transmission That's also why the Acura RL's 3.5 l V6 also got plopped in to the TL thus we got the Type-S model The RL's automatic transmission is leagues better due to the fact that it's a much beefier transmission and is much better engineered 07 to 08 hadn't significantly less automatic transmission failures

I’ve had my 04 going on 8 years. I’ve done power steering pump/ o rings and have the notorious cracked dash of course. Only other thing so far I’ve fixed is the A/C quit and was a simple relay under the hood. I’m a little over 252k miles now in a automatic and can say I trust it to go across the country anytime. Never had a check engine light. I will say I’ve had the transmission do the “flutter” which only happens in overdrive (shift completely out) at speeds of 45-55. Knowing the car, I keep enough foot on the pedal to keep it out of overdrive at that speed but if it does, simply let off then accelerate again. LOVE my quirky car. My brother has the best kept Acura secret most don’t know about. The 06 Acura RL AWD with 430k on it. Every light you can think of is on the dash lol but I want his car too

I replace almost everything major all at once, put some koni struts, Tesla style Navi, and I drive it calmly with quiet continental DSW tires. The car runs amazing and so quietly. You’re on point on all of them except the trans part. Firstly, the manual version of TL is a rarity to even find. It’s uncommon to find a decent auto version for sale, yet alone a manual one.
second, the auto trans from 07-08 TLs uses the RL’s 5 speed auto and its a complete upgrade from the 04-06 year trans. Their failure rate is rare compared to 04-06, and they’re much more reliable therefore they shouldn’t be lumped in the same as the TL trans of 2004-2006.

    *Power Steering Pump @ 1:40
I forgot to describe which pump.
There are actually 6 mounts, but the 6th mount that wasn’t shown doesn’t typically go bad as often as the other 5, just wanted to clarify that.
The HP changed from 270 to 258 because Acura decided to change the way they rated the HP.
Regarding the transmission issue, the 07-08 TLs aren't nearly as bad. However, many owners who have the 07-08 models report/complain about Trans failure. Which is mainly happens if the owner fails to replace the pressure sensors (there are three) when they are experiencing transmissions symptoms, then that could destroy your transmission.
If I missed an issue, post them below!

I don't know how the market is in your area, but it sounds like you have room to negotiate the price. If the owner has maintenance records, it's a big plus. The most important items I would be concerned with, would be the timing belt/water pump, and the transmission fluid and filter change.

My 08 Type-S I got 2 years ago has a massive habit of burning through mounts.. think I'm on the 3rd set with it knocking around again.. I've tried finding upgraded options but still can't seem to find a good set. Only other thing is the ventilated seats in mine that aren't built strong enough to withstand normal things like leaning on the seat to reach something in the back quickly or a knee to the bottom of the front seat to grab something from the passenger seat. Had I known before I wouldn't have the holes I do. Otherwise though, this car is so damn reliable and I can always drive with confidence and have a hell of a time whether a quick trip down the street or heading further out. I'll even find myself taking long ways regularly to get more drive time! I also personally like the simplicity of it. I have a late gen smartphone I have connected through AUX that takes care of anything the car can't. The sound is okay enough not to have to get things aftermarket for improvement and getting back to the driving. It is incredible how hard this car hits 2nd. I got it with some cheap wheels and they didn't even last 10k.. so that was where I put more money next time (get the warranty! I've saved myself $$$$s) Due to some city dings and dents I'll probably be selling mine only to get the next best silver and untouched one I find. These are for sure one the forgotten timeless cars that will build value very soon.

Heres a fix for the mounts tho, Take out the bracket that goes in between the engine and the motor mount. Put a bolt from the INSIDE of the bracket, install the engine motor mount into the bracket, add a nut 🔩 to it, some locktite for vibration. Now you should have the bracket and the motor mount solid together outside the car, it should easy to install as long as the engine is lined up. Do one mount at a time so it can be easier

So if you have an auto and the trans is still good I would highly recommend installing a larger trans cooler. Edit Took 7 grand and had to wait 4 months and it took 2 transmissions. Because I made the mistake of buying a Jasper transmission, my first transmission failed after 8.6 miles! Find a good transmission shop and just have it rebuilt. I had to pay for installation twice and I had to pay for diagnoses. Jasper transmission only paid for 50 cents on the dollar for warranty labor and they only paid for half hour of diagnoses (at half the rate I was charged) and I had to pay for a full hour.

I spend about $ 600/ year on my TL at 230k miles. I keep doing it because it looks so damn good still.
Did a transmission rebuild at 190k in 2017.
    Now oil is leaking unfortunately.
Every 3g TL has a crack in the air intake just after the engine air filter.
Every TL has lower control arm bushings that fall apart. At least mine lasted 230k. I had a shithole of a time trying to find a shop to press the bushings in and just went aftermarket. Which isn’t as smooth. Control arms from Acura TL are $500 each.
I did transmission rebuild at Green Transmissions in West Covina area in CA. Awesome place. Transmission oil was replaced every 30k since 60k miles.
Dash does crack even though I had aerospace 303 dash protectant and a sun shield that I should have used more often.
Oil leaks are common for older cars.
Spool valve assembly gasket. Oil pump. Oil pan. Rear main seal. Bunch of areas that are related to transmission or timing belt side.

Hey man I have an 04 Tl with 146k on it and the trans has a lot of metal shavings in the trans fluid meaning time for a new trans. I know that replacing it will be worth the $ in the long haul how much were you able to get yours rebuilt for? Im looking around right now because I don’t have the bread to just swipe my card lol

@@DaynenOBryant is it shifting okay? Make sure to change transmission fluid with the Honda original every 30k miles at minimum.
Green transmissions did mine for 1900 ish. 40k warranty unlimited time. It’s cheap for so cal area. Which area are you in ?

@@DaynenOBryant it’s quite a drive but if you do go with them tell him Charlie sent you.
      Yelp reviews are excellent.
By the way the labor it takes to get the transmission out is the majority of cost. While the transmission is out you may want to change some items such as rear main seal and the o ring above it. As well as the transmission mount. The labor alone for the job is insane but if doing the transmission rebuild , Kyu will do those for you for just the parts cost. Awesome guy. P

Not a huge fan of the interior of the tl and I love my em2 rn. I would totally go for J swapping my em2 just not sure how much it would cost me. And I would also like to do a 5 lug and maybe put the type s wheels on my em2 if it can work

So what I’ve experienced with the automatic transmission, is that when it starts slipping when changing gears i figured it overheat the trans. I got me a universal oil cooler and ive havent had issues with the trans since! Just a little advice on anyone who does have automatic TLs
( i used Derale 8000 series oil cooler)

how many KM are on your TL, is it a high km example & you just bought an aftermarket one and replaced the stock one? looking at buying one in a few days but its an 2004 auto...fml but the car is so clean & well taken care of with service records and everything for cheap so im probably still going to take the chance and just do what you said to hopefully be safe

My 2006 AUTOMATIC is great. Even the manuals have major problems. All cars have issues just take care of it. If you find a AUTOMATIC in great shape go Ahead and buy it. Great cars

wrong with the horsepower for the 04-06..it was 270 hp because they rated differently. then they switched the way hp was rated and that's why the 258..technically it never had 270

I really love my 08 TL. The only thing that I see that they did cheaply were the front lower seat covers. Leather was to thin and they're starting to crack. Does anybody on here have a fix for them?
