This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written IMO.
It’s one of the few songs that can make me genuinely emotional.
Big Star so great! They have a tremendous catalog; although their output was small, they made every song count.
Alex Chilton was with the Box Tops before he and the rest of Big Star put together some very original aqnd beautiful albums . Stroke It Noel is another gem . Thanks for playing this .
You've a great pair of ears. They sound like an 80s band because they basically invented the power pop template. They sound English because they were obsessed by UK music. Bittersweet melancholy beauty!!

You can't go wrong with Big Star. I also recommend Chris Bell's solo work, especially "I am the Cosmos."
Big Star does indeed sound English at times. Especially in this song. Perhaps because like many American groups who were born out of the British Invasion their affectations were at the very least subliminally influenced.
Big Star released three albums in the seventies each one very different from the others. The only common denominator sadly was horrible distribution and almost nonexistent sales.
They were all highly critically acclaimed but largely ignored by the public.
You need to check out more Big Star. Other great songs are September Gurls, The Ballad of El Goodo, In the Streets.
I cherish the band because they gave me at one point in my life that no other band could equal. No matter when we first hear this, will never hear it the same again.
The tones of those acoustic guitars is just dreamy.

Big Star, yes! such great melodies....gotta do their September Gurls, a power pop gem of a song.
Big Star rocks! This song reminds me of my sister Bonnie and her husband! She passed away a few years ago! I was born in 1970. This is great music!

They're all gone now, except for Jody Stephens, the drummer. They got a raw deal from their record company and they broke up quickly. There's a good documentary about the band called "Nothing Can Hurt Me". Another song of theirs I love is "Ballad of El Goodo".
This song appeared in the television series "That 70's Show" as a love song for Donna & Eric. Some may remember. Very nice song.

They do sound English . Difficult song for 1st time reaction , it's layered . I listen to it at least 3 times , every time I listen to it . Absolutely the most beautiful ballad I have ever heard .
September Gurls is a must!
Chris Bell was so enamored of the Beatles that he tried to fix it so all the songwriting would be credited to Bell/Chilton, a la Lennon/McCartney. One of the songs was written by another member of the band and he said "no" to Bell and retained his songwriting credit--and royalties--for himself.
Big Star's background vocal harmonies are similar to the Beatles. Maybe that's why it sounds English
