My mum worked in the boating pool for 6 consecutive summers, from April to the end of September, from 10am - 6pm, Mon-Sat.
Her last year would have been 1983, as I was starting secondary school at 11, at the beginning of Sept, she was finishing her last summer there.
From April to the summer holidays, from aged 7/8, nearly every day after school, I'd catch the bus, from outside my school, down to the Strand. Back then, the bus used to go into the Strand. The road layout was also different back then too.
I'd get off the bus, and go straight to Mum's shed/hut dump my coat, if it was nice, say hello, and usually, unless it was raining/storming/snowing, (yes, that happened too!), I'd head over to the swimming pool, where I had a season ticket every year, and spend until 6pm, when I had to get out and dressed, waiting for my mum.
Mum was good friends with "Auntie" Rita, the manager, and would have a coffee with her while waiting for me to get changed.
Nearly, every Saturday and almost every day during the summer holidays, I was down the Strand while Mum worked. From 10 - 2pm, apart from me coming back to see Mum, at the boating pool, or playing in the paddling pool, mum had no idea where I was.
But the rules were simple. Do not ever leave the Strand, Do not ever go on the beach, do not talk to strangers, do not go into the alley by the sea wall. If you go out onto the golf course/pitch and putt, tell Anne/Pauline in the cabin that you're going out there, do not play in or around the toilets.
The one time I went onto the beach to see a jellyfish, as I'd never seen a real one at that point, was the one time my dad, who also worked for the council, fixing playground equipment, happened to be driving past on the seafront. Let's just say I spent an uncomfortable day not being able to comfortably sit in Mum's hut for the rest of Mum's shift!
Mum was often called "auntie" Pam by the local kids, but more often than not, it was Mrs Boatingpoollady! I even had someone nearly 8 years later, on a train back from London ask me if my mum used to run the paddle boats at the Stand! I never even knew who she was, but she recognised me, as a now adult, and remembered mum.
Mum said every time they showed the movie Ben Hur on TV, she always knew. She'd hear the kids re-enact the Roman ship battle scene. With the kids shouting, "Battle Speed!", "Attack Speed!" And "Ramming Speed!" As the kids paddled as fast as they could from one end of the pool to the other!
The pool was always the perfect place to catch little Stickleback fish, too.
One of the perks was if Mum wasn't busy, I'd get free boat rides.
It wasn't always fun and games there. I remember sitting on Mum's lap, watching the darkest grey clouds, hearing thunder, and watching the lightening flash across the sky, as it hissed it down. Wanting to go home, as no one was in the park at all, let alone in our sunken pools, and Mum saying that she was sorry, but we couldn't leave until 6 pm, the end of shift.
Every other Saturday, at the bandstand, it alternated between a free brass band concerts and a children's entertainer. One of which I'm sure was the magician that was married to Victoria Wood. I vaguely remember hearing his "piff, puff, poof" catchphrase before when I first saw him on the TV years later.
But all in all, I had a freedom back then that no one today would even dream of doing. But I also had the biggest backyard to play in, too.
And every day during the summer holidays from 2pm to 6pm I had my own swimming pool too!
The Strand was my second childhood home, I have a lot of fond memories down there, and of many people that are no longer with us.

I love going here! Just a chill place to go to, especially in the summer when the pool is open and it's hot!

It’s incredibly run down now. The playground itself is all broken and don’t get me started in the mini golf. A lot needs replacing but the local council could care less.
