I'm only hauling a 12K 5th wheel with my 2022 F350 with the 7.3 but I have the 3:73 rear end. I live in Michigan and highway speed limit is 70 -75 depending on where you are in the state. I drive anywhere from 62-68 MPH if I'm stretching my fuel and will get between 7-7.5 MPG. If I am running 70-75 it's more like 6 MPG and sometimes 5.5 if I have a head wind. No lack of power and I lock out 9th and 10th gear. In the hills I lock out 8th and run in 7th gear and will try to keep my RPM at around 2600 - 2800. I feel that RPM range keeps me just into the bottom of the torque curve and unless the hill is really big, I can usually climb it in 7th. My truck is an XLT FX4 not a Tremor so my tires are 32's instead of the 35's the Tremor has. That is important to remember. As tire size goes up it's like putting a taller gear in the truck. You absolutely need the 4:30 in the Tremor with the taller tires. However, my 3:73's with the 32's do great at towing what my 12K lb. fifth wheel. If you want the absolute max pulling power out of one of these trucks get the 4:30 in a non -Tremor but be prepared to see higher RPM's cruising the expressway at 70-75 MPH when you're in 10th gear and not towing. My FX4 with 3:73's is only running around 1800 RPM at 75MPH in 10th. A 4:30 gear in my truck would put my truck up around 2500 RPM. In a non Tremor truck, the 3:73 is the way to go for most people not towing every day. Good content. Thanks for sharing the information.

I've found that to be true for what I experienced too. Not manually shifting, but locking out gears based on conditions. I like to passively brake prior to a downgrade, locking gears out instead of putting everything on the transmission using cruise control. If I know I need to safely take a downhill at 50 mph on a 75 mph interstate, I will be near that speed before the decline starts. I feel more in control that way. To each there own though.

I have two 2022 7.3’s. One with 4.30(non tremor) and one with 3.73. Both crew cab shortbed lariats. The 3.73 hands down pulls bet.

@@gregjames5070 I've seen a lot of threads stating the 3:73 works out better with the final drive ratio. Basically stating the 3:73 final drive in 8th is better than the final drive ratio with the 4:30 in 10th. Then so on down the line as you drop gears. 3:73 better in 7th than 4:30 in 9th so on and so forth. I originally order the 4:30 but my truck took so long to get built I bought a different truck with 3:73's and ended up changing my order after driving the 3:73 truck and towing with it. I'm very pleased with the over all performance of the 3:73. Like I stated before, if I towed every day and wanted more grunt off the line I'd go 4:30 but 99% of us running these trucks for towing an RV 4 to 5 times a year the 3:73 just makes more sense.

If I lived in the flat lands I would have one. Here in the southwest we have some big hills and I can't have that engine sitting at 5K for 15 minutes straight. At least not on a truck I want to keep for 200K miles.

15 minutes straight? I towed my 5er from Illinois to ft Myers and back. I was never at 5k for 15 mins straight. 6.6 gm gasser with the 6 speed. My trailer was a lot lighter too though.

@@slaytanic921 Yeah we have some long and serious mountain grades down here. Combine the grades with a loss of density at altitude, that's what NA trucks will do with a big boy trailer. I mean, they will do it fine-ish, they will just sound like they are about to come apart at the seams and be up near red-line for long periods.
      My 5er is about 19K loaded, 46ft, full height/profile.
A particular grade in my state has my LBZ diesel at full throttle and about to boil over at the top for a solid 7-10 minutes to hold 55 with the trailer, if there is no slow traffic.

I was wondering if the factory upper overload leaf was engaging with the frame pads, I realize the timbrens you installed would have the effect of carrying some of the weight vs the overload engaging a little more. I might be wrong but get the impression from your comments that the truck is handling and riding differently than the first F250, the front suspension is slightly different after all as is the rear and those tires with the taller sidewall would have a different characteristic as well.

dYour gain set at 3.0 (see in dash in video) seems to be way too low for an 18k trailer! You should be 8.5 or higher with that kind of load. 1 per 1,500 lb's is a good rule of thumb - go to a area with no traffic - go 25 mph and jump on the brakes to a stop - if it doesn't lock up - keep upping the gain until it chirps then back off slightly.

Looks like it did good. I’m curious about the 4.30 when you’re on some steep grades at 60-65 mph. I’m betting 4th gear is all you get which is fine because 3rd gear is what you got with the 3.55 truck and that works out to nearly identical final drives.
It’s also worth mentioning where the Tremo has taller tires as compared to a regular Super Duty that it will have a little taller final drive too.
I think the 4.30 makes sense at slower speeds where you can get down to 2nd gear but any other time the 3.73 is perfectly fine and even a 3.55 would work thanks to the 10 speed.

I agree I'd do 3.73 all day. I think that's why GM says 3.43 is the sweet spot for diesel and the 3.73 for gas. I'll get this up the mountain soon to see......but honestly...with all the extra swag, and HP.......still miss kong....don't miss a diesel any day!

That's why you really don't gain any significant advantage (imo) with the 3.73 gearing, unless it's being used primarily for commuting. I wouldn't trade 1 mpg difference in my 23' w\4.30s for the real advantage when towing more than 10k lbs. Which is what we bought ours to do. Unloaded, cruising around 70 mph, my wallet doesn't know the difference between 14 and 15 mpg.
We haul recreationly and won't put more than 6000 miles a year on this vehicle.

@@redjuice23 Doesnt seem like much but the difference between 10 and 11 mpg does add up over the life of the vehicle to atleast 4,000 more in fuel cost and a shorter range. Got to decide whats more important not really a wrong choice.
