I went from a 2008 Chevy Duramax to a 2022 Ford F350 7.3 with a 3.73 rear gears, and could not be more pleased. Originally I was looking at a F250, but in 2022 they only offered either a 4.30 or 3.55 rear end, but a F350 came standard with a 3.73. I use my truck to commute to work and pull a ~11K fifth wheel, it works great. The gas option also gives me almost twice the payload.

Your experience is right in line with mine. My F250 was ordered by me, Feb of 22 recieved in April of 22. Sitting at 26000 roughly with a lifetime computer average on trip 2 of 11.6 mpg, trip 2 has not been reset since i recieved the truck with 3 miles on it so this is combined towing and highway milage. 7.3 with 4.30 gears 275 75 R20 (stock 34" michelin) I get 14-14.5 mpgs empty running 75-80 here in New Mexico, drop to 65-70 and it will get 14.5-15. Rpms with current tires 75mph is 2100 rpm . We pull a 34ft 5th at 10300 and add a Polaris Rzr on a single axle trailer about 1/2 the time we tow. I tow with all 10 gears available but remove 8-10 manually when approaching a big grade, 7th gear will pull most hills 6th with 4.30 gears is the sweet spot for most big grades. 6th puts me at 4000Rpms , peak torque is 4500. 65-70 towing yeilds 8 -9 mpg depending on wind and mountains. Worst was 6.5 into a 30mph head wind and gusts holding 70mph, this was a double tow with the sxs behind the 5th wheel.

There really doesn’t seem to need to be a whole lot of difference between our experiences and that is very reassuring for anyone looking at a truck. I've been stressing that I messed up not going with the 4.30 gears. I'll be towing 12-13K lbs max like 8-10 times per year and thought they would be overkill.
My truck has 20 inch wheels and 34 inch tires. I might go to 35 inch tires.
You're the first person I've seen on CZcams that actually chnaged their order from the 4.30s to 3.73s and it's a relief to hear you talk about how it's fine. Great video.

      @robertweller2662  Před 13 dny +3

@@SliderFury1 don’t stress about not having the 4:30’s. The 10 speed trans is a game changer. I looked up all the gear ratios of the 10 speed and compared them to the gears in my old Dodge. 1st and 2nd gear are lower than first was in the Dodge. So when I get to 3rd I’m in a gear equivalent to the old Dodge 1st gear. The 4:30 will give more grunt off the line but it also shortens the time you are in each gear. Once you’re rolling on the highway with the weight you are talking about towing, the biggest difference is what gear you’ll run at your cruising speed. If you think about for years they told us not to pull in overdrive. These trucks have 3 overdrives. A 4:30 will have you pulling in 9th and 10th. The 3:73 you’ll be in 7th and 8th. The 3:73 is a perfect gear for towing occasionally but still offers good drive ability and keeps the RPM’s lower at highway speeds. Enjoy that new truck!! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.

Good information. I have a 1997 F350 long box with the 7.3 Diesel engine. I run the truck mostly towing 5,500lbs with a small cargo trailer.
About 6 times a year I tow a 12,000 lb 5th wheel Dunesport which is built to haul my 2004 Jeep wrangler. When the Jeep is in that toyhauler, my towing weight jumps up to the 17k range. So 12-17k. I’m on the highways pulling some good hills in the Cascades.
I figured if a modified 1997 7.3 diesel with 4.10is good enough then a 7.3 gas with 4.30s and a way better transmission has got to be as good or better doing the same things.

We were unable to keep the PS out of the shop every time we went out of town it broke down that’s 7 out 9 states we travel in. I agree, I went with a 2023 F250 with 6.8L and 3.73 gears. I tow a 7600 LB RV trailer and a small utility trailer and I tell ya, these gassers are great. Normally Empty 90% of the time and towing 10% of the time. I live in the South East and the areas i routinely go is within Texas to Florida so makes sense for me to go with gas. About gas stations - this is odd - I find the ones off the interstate don't fit all that well in, however if i scoot into town i can always find a gas station with a better pump arrangement. Id love to put an AUX or Transfer tank in but they are pricey for the gasoline.

@johnfertsch6839 the best option I have seen for a gasser is the 58 gallon tank made by transfer flow. But as you said, very pricey. I find if I behave myself and keep my speeds down, I can pull 7 to 8 MPG and figure on 30 gallons leaving me a 4 gallon reserve, my max range is 210 to 240 miles. I bought an F250 with 7.3 / 3.55 gears in March of 2020. In the summer clear weather with no significant wind on a flat road in south GA unloaded I get 19.2 instantaneous at 55 mph and 16.4 instantaneous at 73 mph. Average trips from the Dublin area to Hilton Head if I stay on back roads and keep speed less than 63mph I get about 16.5 ish. That’s with some stop and go through towns and going onto HHI. If I take the interstate most of the way and keep to 73mph it’s about 16.0. I towed a 7600 lb Airstream from GA to San Diego and back and to Denver and back. I typically don’t lock out 10th unless it’s hunting and just let the transmission do its thing. The Airstream is better than most trailers aerodynamically. There were stretches on I-8 west of Phoenix I saw 12 mpg. But outside temps were over 100 that day and there was no significant wind. A couple of days earlier on that same trip I was fighting very strong headwinds and felt lucky to see 7 mpg. I found outside temperatures make a big difference in fuel mileage. Colder more dense air increases drag more than you’d think. My Hilton head trips are about 1.5 to 2 miles per gallon worse when temperatures are in the 40s or low 50s. Lower than that when it’s raining.

It bothers me they named another 7.3 a 7.3. The 7.3 should have stayed synonymous w the 7.3 diesel.

You're wrong on the 4 30 gears. At 70 mph I and all owners report 1900 rpms

@@LH-yq8bh that’s interesting, I was just talking with the owner of a Tremor a week ago and he told me he is running 2200 at 70 mph. The Tremor with its 35 inch tires would run lower RPM’s. Perhaps he is running those RPM’s at 75 MPH.

I am running stock 33 inch tires. The 4.30 gears really start eating gas after 70 mph. The 4.30's do allow for 10th gear towing. I pull a 15k 5th wheel and pull in 10th most of the time which gets me about 8.5 mph on fairly level driving. Good video and needed info

@@LH-yq8bh what speed are you running while towing in 10th? I can get 8.5 on a flat two lane but need to keep speeds to 55-60. My fifth wheel isn’t that heavy but it has a box nose not a nice aerodynamic nose like many newer trailers.

I run 68 to 70 mph. I have heard that the 4.30 gears give better mpg at lower speeds than the 3.73 and 3.55 since many lock out 9 or 10. I can climb a slight hill in 10th. On the way to Florida on I-95 from VA I got 9 mpg by lieometer and 8.8 hand calculated.

I’ve had my 22 F350 7.3 w/ 10spd w/ 4.30 for two years. The clunkiest transmission I’ve ever had. Unless I drive it in snow/sand mode it will be sluggish at times. I’m not happy with it. I spent 60k for this truck. Waited 20yrs until the right time came. And I got this new. Wouldn’t buy again.

@@pageleftblankintentionally Man that really sucks. I feel bad for you. Like any vehicle there are some built with issues. The 10 speed is a different animal for sure. It does seem that the of the guys with transmission complaints, those running the 4:30 seems to say they are worse. It does make sense, the 4:30 makes the transmission shift sooner and have more of that clunky feeling. Have you considered a 5 start tune? I’ve heard good things. I will do mine but not until I’m out of warranty. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment. Good luck with the truck, I hope they get it sorted out for you.

😅crazy, I have a7.3L with 373’s and the 10 speed shifts just fine. Only time It will get ‘lost’ and search for a gear is if I come up to a stop light and only slow to 5mph, then it short shifts once and a while. But that’s the only time it give a weird shift. But if I stop, it’s like the trani shifts to 1st gear and the remaining gears are butter.

@@ShelbyvsViper I also have had similar experiences to yours. Gets lost once in a while at slow speeds. Stop and take off again a little harder and it straightens itself out. I do see more shift complaints from the 4:30 folks, lower gears seem to make these 10 speeds a bit more shifty.
