  • A little personal one this time around, being a director/writer in the British Films industry. I ask the question, what is British Film?
    Great directors like Steve McQueen, Edgar Wright, Alfred Hitchcock, Danny Boyle - wonderful actors such as Idris Elba, Daniel Day Lewis, Gary Oldman, Andrew Garfield, etc and fantastic films like Shaun of the Dead, Snatch, Trainspotting but what does it all mean?
    Does it compare to the Korean, Danish, American, Swedish, French and German movie industry?
    If not, what is going wrong?

    My problem with the brittish filmmaking is the lack of distribution.
    There are tens of brittish movies every year I wish I could check upon, but I'm lucky if I can watch Amityville Scarecrow. And that's sad.

      Yes, that's certainly a problem but the distribution is a problem because the films are bad!

      @AmityvilleFan Před 3 měsíci

      @Flemmings So? Half the movies I'm watching are bad. Doesn't mean they are not entertaining. (Heck, my channel's name is literally AMITYVILLE fan.)
      If the american indies can be accessible from the EU, I don't see why the britts can't achieve the same.
      Btw, imdb need a filter by countries within the "your ratings" filter.
      That's the second thing they need. Even more importantly they need a rating per season of shows.

    how did you start making films?

      Fantastic question! I began making films as a teenager using a home video camera and then developed that into short films using consumer cameras. Before I then moved into financing my own first feature for just £7000 - it's the film that got me some recognition after it entered a great film festival in the UK.

    I agree with you, personally I hate these Mr D'Arcy type costume dramas and those cheap and nasty gangster/football hooligan type films, many of them make the Asylum output seem Oscar worthy. Some of my favourites would include lock stock, long good Friday, the Elephant man, Ghandi being Welsh I've got to include Zulu and Twin Town. It is a shame that our talent in front of and behind the camera have to go elsewhere to find success. Great video

      HUGE love for the comment. I absolutely agree with everything you said. Long Good Friday is incredible!
      Do stick around!!

    Would you consider the Harry Potter films as British?

    • @MarcusFlemmings
      @MarcusFlemmings  Před 4 měsíci +1

      They aren't :( they're American (and I think partially BRITISH) How -fed up is that!
      Thanks for the comment as well!

    Interesting impact that the party in parliament has on BFI. With the current government films are important by commercial impact. With labour it was seen as Cool Britannia.
    You think it is possible for British talent to untie to make their own studio like United Artists?

      Do you know what, you have a VERY good point. The 90's was labour and embracing the arts. I hope the British talent can unite and create something beautiful. But it'll take a movement to do so!

    Is Lock Stock a British film? If it is than that's my choice.

    Absolutely love your attitude.
    I 100% concur regarding the BBC and the licence fee. It’s a total p*ss take.
    British Gangster flicks are now almost a parody of themselves. It’s actually quite embarrassing.
    For me, it’s about the class system. Nowadays you have to have a lot of money to go to film school, in London anyway. So it’s really only middle/upper class kids who can go and because they’ve had a compatibly safe/insular upbringing they lack any real life experience/trauma that can be conveyed through their art (I realise that can be construed as a massively sweeping generalisation) I feel there is a distinct lack of gritty human drama with a real depth to the characters. This, I would say is especially true of tv drama.
    It’s always the same types of characters, who drink wine and shag each others spouses then it all goes pear shaped and someone ends up killing someone blah blah Zzzzzzzzz
    I want someone who’s lived a varied life, who knows what it is to struggle to put pen to paper and make me feel what it’s like to be a flawed human fighting against a sh*t storm whether that be internal or external. Real humanity dealing with real conflict.
    Anyway. Loved the video. Thanks!

      My friend, I'm so glad you understood this video - your points are so true! Honestly, the set up is set up for failure and they won't change it. I find it all so pointless! Thanks for the comment! Stick around!

    Exactly, we help produce them but American Film Companies own them and distribute them. The Revenue/Profits are going to them not us.

      EXACTLY! It''s so misleading! And they try and sell it as if we're making the money/films!
