- Daniel Rossen - Shadow In The Frame (Official Video)
www.danielrossen.com/
The idea for this came in part from the 1971 TV special “The Music of Nilsson” in which Harry Nilsson looks to be performing live and then begins to multiply and harmonize with himself at the piano. It’s a ridiculous and also kind of lonely performance. Luke and I felt that something similar but darker and more claustrophobic could reflect the tone of “Shadow in the Frame."
I also liked the idea of a unique performance tailored to the video itself. It was an opportunity to home in on the anxious inward energy underneath all the layering of the album version.
Taken from the new album ‘You Belong There’ out Friday April 8 via Warp Records.

SHADOW IN THE FRAME LYRICS
taken on your last shape
now carry these lines through the canyon
all these hills will surely wash away
all these hills will surely wash away
one at a time the lamps died
left shapes in the dark I can’t describe
all us sightless creatures find our way
all us sightless creatures find our way
underground
great plates that crack and groan
and break apart
the earth shaking miles below
one more living nightmare
born to a world that don’t care
the truth is always brighter than you say
the truth is always brighter than you say
but it’s your fate
you will watch us flash and fade
and get torn apart
this place wild beyond control
conversations we will never have
a scene from another time
flashing by
my only person
a shadow in the frame
flashing by

Everytime I listen to a Daniel Rossen composition, whether it's solo, department of eagles, or grizzly bear, I feel like I'm listening to music for the first time. I never know where his progressions will lead. There's such a sense of tension and fear that gives way to discovery and wonder.
You couldn't have described better the way I feel... His compositions seem to open a wide world of its own kind.
I believe Daniel is not capable of making mediocre songs.
His music always amazes me without fail!
I'm so much waiting for Rossen's new album and I really want to see him live one day.
The new record is perfection.
He's touring in May and June! If you're in Europe or the US
@@Merlincat007 Sadly, I live in Seoul, South Korea, but I’ll definitely fly to the States to see his live some day!
Thanks for the information, tho.
@Funky Abzu I’m sure his concerts ate worth it, it’s just too unlikely to see him live where I live. I might have to fly to the States to see his gigs! :)
Thanks for the lovely comment.
He lives
It’s hard to believe Silent Hour/Golden Mile is ten years old now. I’m so excited to lose myself in a new batch of songs from you. Your music is an inspiration. Truly one of the best songwriters and guitarists of our time! Thank you Daniel!
my thoughts exactly.
realized how fast we're getting older
Wait until you hear Doja cat
@@jerrymalerry8452 “I heard from a friend of a friend that that d**k was a ten out of ten” is a pretty great lyric 😂
Of all times
His voice is like a place where we found peace.
simply an expression of pure joy and wonder

Rossens voice and music are pure comfort
@@ryanmcguigan6134 You get joy and wonder? I get contemplation and solemness
To exist if hardly at all, returning to the crumbling soil of the Earth, the mantle dancing below us, steam and fire above us, everything, so expansive and beautiful. We are lucky to even know it for a moment, and some of us are even luckier to be able to express that feeling the way you do, through beautiful song writing.
This was beautiful too
A true master. Pro musicians’ favorite musician. Respected songwriters’ fav songwriter
I remember going to see Grizzly Bear in the bay area and was fixated on how beautiful Daniel's vocals sounded live - they just blew me away.
One of the great things about Grizzly Bear is that both Rossen and Droste have amazing voices that are both completely distinct from one another and also unique in the world of singer's voices.
What's more dangerous than Daniel Rossen? Six Daniel Rossens!!!
Our haven on the southern point is calling us.....
Yeah. We are alive to be part of this. We win. Love x infinity.
At 62, I will be older (by at least a decade) than most everyone at this Saturdays Brooklyn Made show, and you know what? I don't care!
Brilliant musicianship.....going to be so good to hear the new songs for the first time that night!
Cheers! Music can't have age limits
You are in for a treat!
Got to see him here in New Orleans last week - true musicianship on display. His guitar playing is completely unique among his contemporaries. It amazes me how there is not more buzz around Daniels solo material. The Grizzly Bear work is also outstanding but the more sparse arrangements here really highlight his songwriting ability in my humble opinion. Enjoy the show!
@@mattengland653 So envious of you! I hope someday he gives a show at Mexico City. And I'm baffled too by the lack of recognition of all his superb musical offerings, I don't think he yearns for fame but he definitely deserves more acknowledgement.

Man, I think most of us on youtube here want to be you in 10-15 or plus years. I hope the show blew out your Miracle Ears. >;3
simply obsessed. obsessed.
This is not music. It’s an intense journey through memories and futures
*Daniel Rossen always stands out in my mind when I occasionally get this painful gut feeling, thinking that he might not know how greatly his music has impacted my life for the better. All the tiny moments where I am just moved and the suffering of life is alleviated by his music later gives me a sense of dread that he may not know these moments exist and are of his creation. I think of him struggling to maintain a livelihood and thinking this is all for nothing. And here I am just having my fucking soul obliterated, cleansed, and reformed by his music, and the disconnect hurts my feelings. Like weeping at a painting and the artist is penniless on the streets only to die thinking his work was never appreciated. IT IS APPRECIATED. I have had profound peak experiences listening to Daniel’s music. I remember when Silent Hour/Golden Mile came out, I took mushrooms and blasted it while I laid on a raft in a pool, under the full moonlight watching the clouds rush by. Up On High kicked it off and I had a full blown out of body experience hearing that song for the first time. I was everything, I could not tell where my skin ended and everything else began. I was a stick figure who could feel the paper he’s drawn on to and the table beneath that and the pencil etc. And that was straight up MAGIC. So, I only hope that Daniel lays his head on his pillow at night and doesn’t sweat that his art has improved a humans life out there. Him not knowing is a painful thought with how much i know it.*
I love it when you can strip a song back and it still sounds amazing. It also goes to show that the album version doesn't sound over-produced in comparison to this, and that the elements incorporated only help to elevate the melody rather than bury or complicate it.
Album version has an extra layer of amazingness that makes these amazing harmonies shine even brighter.

currently in Leeds to see him this man is an inspiration to me he made me have the courage to go busking this man is a genius at what he did with grizzly bear and department of eagles thank you Daniel for making my life just more better :)
Beautiful. This version sounds every bit as complete and full as the album version. Not sure that should be possible, but Dan doesn't seem to be aware.
Holy fuck this is so good!! I hate Instagram ads usually but hot damn am I happy I was exposed to this. I wish more written songs were like this - laden with meaning, both in word and in sound.
Dude same, scrolled past the ad and heard just a split second of it but I was like OOH a modern artist playing nylon strings? Had to give it a shot and so glad I did
Easily my album of 2022 so far.
Singing along, video on loop, stuck at my physically intensive manual labor job. This song takes me to a different and beautiful place.
Here because Fleet Foxes posted the new album on their story. Wow, do I feel lucky to have seen that story.
low key utterly obsessed
Dear Daniel, as a longtime fan, thank you so much for doing this album and pouring all this out. It's incredibly refreshing to see a virtuoso of the instrument, and a master of the songwriting craft both at the same time, pulling this music off in this day and age with so much humility, tenderness, and finesse all at once. This gives me so much hope for various different reasons I can't even explain, watched it with a smile. Thank you.
I was just thinking of Dan. This man is a master musician
This is like a lighthouse guiding me away from a stormy sea of bad music. Absolutely Beautiful.
Came across this well shot video via an IG story ad and must say it's one of the best placements ever. Vaguely know of the Grizzly Bear catalog, which I will be exploring in the next few months, but I heard this and "It's A Passage" off the album and was straight away taken back by the skilful and emotive song writing, reminds me very much of Chris Cohen's "Overgrown Path", snips of Fleet Foxes "Crack-Up" album and even early Paul Simon but all the while still being very Daniel Rossen, great work.
Overgrown Path is another song writing gem, feel like not enough people know about Chris Cohen
Daniel is the reason I picked up guitar and every time i see him play it fills me with inspiration
So good to see you releasing new stuff. Department of Eagles was such a huge part of my adolescence. Been a huge fan of yours ever since.
Saw the Austin show. Daniel is a humble human and an amazing artist.
So happy for the appetizer before the the release of the album.
Something about how you play and your voice.. much love Daniel ✌
He just doesn’t miss it’s crazy. This upcoming album has brought me together with friends I haven’t seen or talked to in 5 years. Thank you Daniel.. who’s gonna tab these bad boys 👀
His album is you belong there is this generations astral weeks , yes, it's that good
There’s a difference between talented and gifted… Daniel is gifted
Daniel. I usually hate guitar-filled songs. And you do this. Thank you for making me hate guitar so much less.
Awesome song & performance. Now that he’s cloned himself twice over there’ll be no stopping him 💪🏻👍🏻
I wish I could share this song with my dad. I think he would've liked it.
This song's vibe reminds me of Little Brother, which is the song that hooked me to Grizzly Bear catalogue. Guess I found out whose input made me resonate with the music. Excellent craftsmanship. Thank you for this song.
he's a master of hunting sounds, evokes mystery, anxiety, a certain light at the end of the tunnel... quite unique vibes
I always really liked Daniels contributions with Grizzly Bear. Was lucky to have gotten to see them live. And his solo stuff is fantastic. This, being no exception.
How is everything he does so perfect?
c'est la première pub insta qui capte mon attention au point de chercher le morceau original sur youtube, j'adore la mélodie, on dirait un mélange entre Low Roar, Woodkid et une vieille chanson française
Fortunate enough to see him live at a very intimate show in New Orleans last week where he was also selling vinyl of the Ad yet unreleased new album!
It is a gorgeous album start to finish to be sure.
The man is a consummate musician. His unique playing style and tuning selection on “Unpeopled Spaces” in particular makes it sound like there are 2 or 3 guitars playing at once while live. I actually mistakenly thought the bass notes in one of the verses on the album version was a horn or cello but it is just the way he thumbs the bass notes on the guitar. You can hear it clearly live. Very creative playing. Amazes me how such an accomplished musician and songwriter doesn’t receive more recognition than he does. Hopefully that will change after this album!
omg so fucking beautiful
I liked listening to this in Nashville
Music an art form that evokes the purest emotions through the ears , to the soul and heart.
Only real genuine musicians who play instruments can do... thank you👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 bravo
This is very very Good! I've just recently discovered Daniel Rossen and I'm amazed with his melodies. Can't wait for the next album. I hope it won't take as long.
Thank you so much Daniel. Please keep going, you are needed more than ever now. Its an honour to be around while you are..
Thank you
This fucking song man... You're a genius Daniel, thank you.
No one does it like you, Daniel
Yes Daniel!!!!
Brilliant song and album! my partner and I were completely blown away by your performance in Toronto; we couldn't believe what we were hearing was for real, it was an ethereal experience and we felt so lucky to have been there. Big Mahalo, Daniel!
I like this version better than the album version
Rossen is my favorite song writer of all time
you are just brilliant
Rossen triplets jamming together.
This music hits the heart ,the soul and the intellect. super stuff.
He’s alive!
cannot wait for Friday.
have been anticipating another release from you for quite some time and I've loved everything from the album so far
Same. I haven't been this excited for a new record in a looong time. I'm practically counting the hours down, haha.
I didnt recognize it right away, but now I have to say it is absolutely music and art of the highest quality. Its a masterpiece.
Maestro Rossen!👏👏👏
Amazing
brilliant song - Also, incredible video in reference to the lyrical themes and shadow uses. 🙌
Elliott Smith's 'Tomorrow Tomorrow' echoing through this - beautiful
Just wow
Beautiful
stunningly beautiful, love that moment when the 12 string comes in
Daniel...you are an amazing artist and an incredible talent! I'm hoping to see you live one day. I was introduced to Grizzly Bear when y'all opened for Radiohead and my fam and I have been fans since! Your solo records are incredible as well.
Absolutely fantastic. I purchased Whitey on the Moon back in college, and have been a fan ever since. Cheers dude.
Silent Hour/Golden Mile is still one of my top five favorites albums (EP). So hauntingly beautiful and extremely moving. I just wish Daniel would play here in New Zealand or at least Australia. I’m happy to settle with the EP for now though and really looking forward to his new material.
Amazing! Daniel is probably the best musician I have ever heard, so eclectic and talented.
This is very good and intense
So beautiful. Thank you for this wonderful song ❤
I’m so excited!!!! You are such an inspiration to me and you always will be Daniel! Thank you!

This video is so simple and yet complex. Beautifully done!!
Absolutely gorgeous.
This song just....
What a voice and performance!! So very excited to hear this in LA.
weeew can't wait Daniel!!
I usually need some time to get used to music before it starts to effect me on an emotional level. But with this music it took a few seconds of an instagram ad to turn me on to this. It is so beautiful and different. Love it.
Btw. Amazing guitar skills xD
Beautiful song and very nice idea for the video. Love the simply good moves
Absolutely masterful. Thank you for your work of art Daniel. Inspires my music.
