@@patconzip Learn the difference between e-cvts and cvts please. Cvts are trash, e-cvts are some of the most reliable transmissions out there. They don't use belts or pulleys like Nissan/Subaru cvts, and that's the thing that causes most issues with cvts long term.
I heavily researched both of these vehicles. The Maverick was in the lead for most of the time. Ultimately, I bought the Santa Cruze. We plan to do a lot of traveling and the SC is the more comfortable of the two. Also there was a hefty market adjustment for any Maverick were I got the SC under MSRP with a better warranty. Very happy with my decision. The SC gets a lot of attention where ever we go.
I am looking right now and the Maverick is supposed to be cheaper than the Hyundai, but that is not the case with the almost universal price gouging done by Ford dealers. 2023 and 2024 are going to be tough on Ford because they have destroyed their reputation with greedy dealership owners.
Bro, I got a SC recently in that light blue color with all the black accents and cross bars on top. Literally everywhere I've been recently I see people staring at it 😂 I had a 20 hear old tuscon that I owned for 10 years that I upgraded from so it's a weird feeling lol
The Santa Cruz has an optional turbocharged version of the engine with 281 HP and 311 ft lbs of torque. It also has a higher towing capacity 3500/5000 vs 2000/4000 for the low end/high end models.
The last new Hyundai I bought literally burnt to the ground after the year I bought it, make all the Ford jokes you want, but I’ve owned four, and they have never let me down As for the the video, the hybrid Ford trounces the base four cylinder Hyundai in mpg, and still provides the same HP, and it’s ditto for the more powerful option, the EcoBoost is more potent that the Santa Cruz upgraded engine.
Less is more - the market is flooded with over teched/priced vehicles, it's refreshing to have the option to get a back to basics vehicle without having to buy somthing used 15/20 years old.
I agree that the Maverick may age better than the Santa Cruz. I really like them both, but I just can't get past the Maverick's interior with its' unusual color palette and cheap-looking materials. I am a Ford fan, but I would choose the Santa Cruz...
One thing that Hyundai (and Kia) do better than anyone else is warranty. The Santa Cruz has a 10 year/ 100,000 mile drive train warranty as well as a 5 year / 60,000 mile stnadard warranty that covers everything else. Theres also a 7 year warranty on body rust and 5 year 24-hour roadside assistance. Both of them are unlimited mileage. No one else in the industry has warranties like this, which means you wouldn't be paying for repairs while you are still paying for the vehicle. Features and accessories are nice but don't mean a thing if the company doesn't stand behind their product. I have a Kia Sorento and the transmission went out at 95,000 miles. They replaced it at no cost to me.
Maverick for the hybrid. The tail light thing happens all the time with vehicles that have hatches. A typical truck doesn't do this, in the off chance you drive with the tail gate removed...
It ain’t apples to apples. Hyundai, in their infinite stupidity, decided to pair their turbo with a piece of shit DCT tranny which WILL break down (it’s just a matter of when). So, for anyone with sense, this makes the SC turbo package a non option.
Correction on your horse power comment. Santa Cruz has more power than the maverick. You only noted the numbers for the non-turbo Santa Cruz…. The turbo would be 281hp and I believe 311 pt
Probably has to do with the price. The Turbo Santa Cruz is in the Ford Ranger price range. You could build a Maverick with all the works for slightly more then the starting price of a Santa Cruz turbo. By the time you add all the options to the Santa Cruz you are looking at a 45k truck.
@@adamdodds144 Not true. A maxed out Maverick to get close to what you get with the Santa Cruz would cost you around $35k, and that's the same price as the SEL Premium trim of the Santa Cruz, which also comes with the turbo engine.
The Maverick is just tired looking. In person there is no comparison between the two. In fact, in person, the Hyundai is really amazing and a lot bigger than any of the photos reveal. Even with the stock Santa Cruz motor the truck is quite peppy, more fun to drive and super comfortable
I look at the daring Sonata design from a few years ago that everyone said would age poorly and it still looks good. Such an overused trope in car design, if a car looks good now it’ll look good in the future. Doesn’t matter what supposed trends are followed, good design is good design.
Not really true, 90s bubble design looked ok for it's time, but looks pretty terrible now. Even the much beloved mk4 supra is pretty ugly if we're being honest.
We just purchased a santacruz here in Canada and it has 281 horsepower and 311 foot pounds of torque with the ultimate trim you get the larger 2.5 liter turbo with the wet 8 speed dual clutch.
@@Ka_Gg Hyundai knows this and that's why they are not going after truck guy like myself. i just want something that is a compact SUV with some truck ability. that's why they are following the SUV trend. i thought about buying this, but at the end of the day, my next car will be an EV. this would've been an awesome EV. too bad they didn't go for it.
I would go for the Maverick, I actually want the hybrid with the good MPG, just need a truck for some camping and light yard work. 99% of the time it will just be my city driver, I am not a rancher or planning on doing any rock hopping lol
That vertical end to the cab leading to the bed is also more functional and allows you to load things over the side easier than the Santa Cruz, Chevy Avalanche, and old Honda Ridgeline more stylized slanted body panels going over the sides of the bed...
Santa Cruz 2.5L has normal 8 speed automatic transmission. Santa Cruz 2.5 Turbo has 8 speed Wet Duel Clutch Transmission which also is an automatic. Towing weight is 3500 lbs for the 2.5L and 5000 lbs for the 2.5 turbo.
I think they are both great trucks. The Maverick has a nob shifter. The Cruz has a shifter. The Maverick has a traditional bed. The Cruz has a inbed storage. The Ford is traditional outside, but interior unique. The Cruz has traditional interior, but unique outside. It comes down to personal preference, not what anyone else thinks. The best truck is the one you buy!
@@N0mad1600 Hyundai has never and will never claim the SC is a truck. Its titled as an SUV. They never intended it to be a truck or in the truck class. I purchased the SC for the ride & tech options you don't get in the Maverick. I was looking for a comfortable ride on long hauls and some place I could throw my mower or other objects in that wouldn't fit into my escape. It was never meant to be a work truck. If that is what you are buying it for then you are better off going with a mid or full size truck. It all comes down to what works best for the individual. The maverick didn't give me that. Again personal preference.
I already have a heavy duty truck, if I were to buy either of these I’d go with the Santa Cruz. Not a big fan of maverick styling especially the massive tail lights. I do think it’s cool that hybrid comes standard though. Also with the turbo version the Hyundai makes more hp and torque than maverick
Ordered a Maverick last week. It'll he my 6th or 7th pickup. I had Nissan, Isuzu, Fords (150 - 250 - 350), and Chevy. So from a pretty experienced history of what a pickup can and can't do, I'm very excited for this truck and the fuel mileage. I've driven both the Ranger and Bronco Sport which the Maverick is based on and the Bronco Sport/Maverick feels more comfortable at the drivers position. That on frame interior of the Ranger reduces or squats the seating position more than the Maverick. I think most people buy trucks for what they think they might do with them, not what they actually do with them. Myself included. I ready for an inexpensive higher mpg vehicle that I can take occasionally to the hardware store or throw the kayaks in.
I know this is * slightly * off topic, but how cool would it be if Ford took the new Maverick, filled it with fancy tech, and brought back the Lincoln Blackwood nameplate? Maybe that could be a redesign video idea
I don’t know if they would choose the Maverick for this, it sees too small and understated for what Lincoln owners are probably looking for nowadays. Back then the two brands were more or less just re-badges on the same vehicles with higher quality materials and engine options. Since Lincoln has undergone is re-design a few years ago, i feel like they would almost have to chop the back off of the new Navigator and give it a little more aggressive styling to carry on the Blackwood name.
This idea reminds me of the Cadillac Cimarron. Remember that abortion? It was a Chevy Cavalier with some Cadillac swag glued onto it. Completely pointless. A Blackwood has to be based on the F-150. It might still be pointless, though.
Nah, the Santa Cruz looks modern in an upscale way while the Maverick looks "traditional" but in a cheap way. Pretty sure the Hyundai will still look better 10-20 years from now. I'm a fan of more square/traditional designs like the G-Wagon or even a Cherokee too but the Maverick is deliberately under-designed so that it won't take away too many sales from the Ranger, F150, etc. while the Santa Cruz, not having any in-house competition, is in full effort mode.
@@popsandbangs8858 the other is butt ugly so it says something about your taste. I'll stick with conventional truck styling and you'll be the weirdo on the block. No skin off my back.
@@popsandbangs8858 you must be blind. That thing is hideous. It makes the Aztek look like a masterpiece. I don't understand why anyone would think the Santa Cruz is a good looking vehicle. It is beyond hideous.
The Maverick looks great. But I want a normally aspirated engine that will last. That makes me get the Hyundai. I don't need high horse power in these vehicles. But I won't deal with high maintenance and repair costs on turbos, or hybrid powetrain that will render the vehicle too expensive to repair later on. Not to mention cvt Ford VS 8 speed auto for Hyundai.
The ecvt is far more durable than your typical automatic, the hybrid system in the maverick also has lasted over 500k on countless Ford taxi's. It's one of the most durable powertrains on sale lol.
It's about time they brought back the compact truck. They should have done it a few years ago when the Tacoma, Colorado, Frontier, etc. went midsize. The Maverick looks great, Ford is going to sell a ton of these, hope reliability proves to be good. I hope Mitsubishi puts in great effort in a new Mighty Max compact pickup truck. It could possibly bring them out of the doldrums.
Ford's history on small vehicles is the main reason I would never consider anything that small from Ford. Anything that Ford dd small has had issues going all the way back to the firebomb Pinto
I’m a full-sized truck guy but I can’t afford a full-size truck but I ordered a 23 maverick awd as my job requires me to get there in the snow. But this is a very good technical breakdown of the aesthetics of each vehicle!
I would go with the Santa Cruz, because let's be real here, these aren't real trucks, and the Maverick is trying too hard to look like a truck, which would make me kinda embarassed to buy one, like if I wanted a real and capable truck, I would buy one, not this. The traditional design is good, if it was on a real truck, the squared shape doesn't fit well with the small wheels. Now the Santa Cruz knows that it's not a real truck, and that's why it doesn't pretend to be one, it tries to be its own thing and accomplishes that really well. And lastly, the Santa Cruz is also more powerful than the Maverick with the turbo engine option.
To me the maverick looks like a mini-truck from the 90s like the Nissan hardbody pickup and the Santa Cruz looks like a Pontiac Aztec/Subaru baja pickup
I don't understand.. you went for the Maverick because it had a "bigger engine" with 250 hp good for 4,000 lbs of towing, but failed to mention the Santa Cruz also has an optional engine with 281 hp and 310 lb ft torque, good for 5,000 lbs of towing, surpassing the Maverick when it comes to engine size and capability.
he is all about design but prefers the maverick that has a boring design compared to the santacruz further more the fords interior is so much worse than the santa cruz and thats in my opinion the most important part of a car because u spend all time there
@@diogolaroca3937 My wife and mom like the design of the Santa Cruz and me, my dad and brothers like the boring Maverick design. I do like the interior of the Sanra Cruz way better though but I Maverick because of a traditional truck look to it. He also picked the Ford and said it was because HP difference between base engines and AWD. Yet the Maverick doesn’t offer AWD on the hybrid. He said he disliked FWD right off the get go. And if you pick AWD you should be comparing the Hyundais 2.5t which is more powerful than Fords. The advantage of the Maverick is clearly MPG with the hybrid but it has drawbacks such as the CVT transmission and only being offered in FWD. the Hyundai has a dual clutch which is a superior transmission as well. Hyundai is clearly trying to be a more sporty vehicle that offers utility of a truck. While Ford is trying to be more of a daily driver/work vehicle. The Hyundai interior and transmission choices prove that. Also the Maverick is priced the way it is because it’s built in Mexico while the Santa Cruz is built in the US.
You can get a Santa Cruz with a 2.5 Turbo with 281 HP & 311 F/P Torque. It's super peppy and handles great! Looks wise, if you want something that looks kind of safe and meh you get the ford. If you want something that looks different and has some style you get a Santa Cruz. But that just me.
It’s really nice to see the Ford comes standard with 120 volt hooks ups so you can add accessories of your own if you choose so it has 6 tie downs in the bed standard you can get more as a option it also has a flat floor in the rear seat like a f150 so you lay things down without worrying about the hump in the center Ford’s hybrid system has also been used for 16 years and is now made in house by Ford also the bed is squared off so you can stack and load things easier theres even plastic guard against the rear window so you can stack things without worrying about the paint the Maverick is what a truck should be made for work small business will love this truck
I have to write about the Maverick hybrid drivetrain. Yes, FWD trucks are blah, I agree, but I think that the base drivetrain will adequately serve the overwhelming majority of people who are tired of lifting hatches and folding down seats to store small items in CUV’s. I have owned a Ford C-Max which is the same E-CVT, but had a smaller 2.0 engine and output was 186 not 191 hp. No torque figures were ever released, but I am telling you that the acceleration experience was extremely improved compared to my Ford Focus that had the same engine. I would bet that the reason Ford never releases torque for hybrid engines is because they don’t want people to know that it has similar torque compared to the upgraded engine. It’s only something a person who previously owned a hybrid would understand. The combination of the electric motors and planetary gear response was most dramatically different at highway speeds- seriously, I nearly rammed people when I floored the C-Max before I knew how fast it was on the highway. Another point, if anyone reading this buys a hybrid, just because it is de-tuned to run 87 octane doesn’t mean you have to do it. I didn’t get better fuel economy, but the power was increased with 92 octane fuel because timing wasn’t pulled as much. Well worth a couple of dollars per tank IMO- it’s a 12.5:1 comp ratio engine- look it up! More differences, well how about no accessory belt? All your accessories- PS, AC, alternator are either electric or managed, as in the case of the alternator, by the transmission generator. An electric AC means that the compressor will always be running at optimum efficiency rpm, and can run at that optimal rpm stopped in a traffic jam. Most people don’t go off road or even need 4WD. Even those who think that they need it, probably don’t. I drive through fields, farms, and down trails all the time- in a Ford Focus. I learned how to drive in a field in a Chevy Monte Carlo. Cars and car-like vehicles can go places as long as the driver is paying attention to the terrain. Anyway, that base hybrid drivetrain is probably a lot more powerful than you think- that’s what I wanted to say. Arguments between owners will certainly be forthcoming.
@@DK-bk1vq - Owning that CMax was great, My wife killed it running into the front of a Malibu. The Malibu died a worse death, but the CMax was totaled due to the airbags and minor subframe damage. I have always wondered why Lincoln didn’t hot rod the MKZ hybrid version by using cam phasers and allowing the engine to swap from Atkinson to Otto cycle depending on throttle input like Toyota does. Nobody would bat an eye if Lincoln recommended high octane fuel only in an MKZ- Toyota did it in the Prius! I will say that Lincoln did a good job putting a separate electric motor in the Corsair hybrid, as I understand how that one works. I haven’t read up on it in a while because I’m no longer interested in hybrids. I want full EV. My cost per KWh here is so low that charging a Lightning from 0-100% would only cost me $15 estimated. I do think that anyone who gets a Maverick will be happy with it, and it’s a “gateway” vehicle- LOL. There’s a lot of interesting battery tech out there, and regardless of what anti-American patriots think- the best of it is US based. Those people simply aren’t paying attention. Check out Plasma Kinetics and Lytec, and you’ll see what I mean. @@DK-bk1vq - Thanks for the compliments! I had to revisit this comment because I realized I’d misinformed. The company behind new battery tech is Lyten, not Lytec. If we can believe their press, they have developed a functional Li-S battery chemistry removing cobalt, and drastically reducing price. Plasma Kinetics is more interesting, IMO, because of it’s safe storage of H for use in fuel cells. Batteries would still be required, if you understand that tech, so the combination of the 2 would be ideal.
I love both but I despise the hole beside the screen in Maverick. I don't think they will be even compared if the you're looking for the car that suits your style. Facelift will rid of the hole and put the full screen in I'm pretty sure. They both will sell and they're charming because It's new orientation for the pickup market. Both of them are good on the road too.
I’m going to be a tad bit of a pain in the ass, but if you take the Santa Cruz and Subaru Baja and line them up side to side. You are going to find that it’s the same old same old when it comes to Asian design with trucks, tends to age like a fine milk, sours quick. Hopefully I’m wrong, but I’m going to bet that I’m right. If I’m going to buy a truck, gimme a truck
I honestly think the maverick is the way to go. It’s design is more simplistic but far more purposeful. Also ford has a much larger and successful history with trucks in general. The powertrains that come in the maverick have already proven themselves quite good in other ford platforms. The maverick seems like it might be the best value in any vehicle. I do think the Santa Cruz looks cool but it almost seems a bit over the top.

@James Calhoun. Agreed. Keep in mind too that the US version of the Santa Cruz doesn't come with Trail mode unlike the Canadian or other markets versions. So going off road here in the US you're hamstrung even more with this smaller truck . take a look at the reviews from Driving Sports TV channel for each. And you can lay flat between the tailgate a 4X8 sheet of plywood ! This concept started all the way back in 1957 with the first Ranchero. When GM came out with the El Camino, you had to angle the sheet to get it in the back. It would not lay flat between the wheel wells ! That was something GM never addresses throughout the whole run of The El Camino !
I love my 2.0 awd Maverick. You did a great job in going really in depth like you did. Great review and great video and good choice in which truck you would choose. Thanks 😊.
I am really interested which style will win out and be more popular. I’m a traditional dude so I prefer the Ford, but I understand the appeal of the Santa Cruz, can’t wait to see which one wins out. My guess is Ford bc we all know how the F150 is doing 🤣 but only time will tell.
The relief and chamfers are a carryover from architectural design. Look at a six panel interior door. The front mimics the back. Ford balances the design using the styling language throughout the vehicle. It’s structured as you said, subtle and fitting. Form follows function. And it’s a consistent metaphor throughout their truck lineup.I have not much to say about the Hyundai. 🤷♂️

if this is the market for me... it's not I need more bed and, a bigger engine... BUT if it were my market, Santa Cruz wins this for me no question... I actually want this vehicle... just doesn't fit my needs.
Actually, the payload rating for the Santa Cruz includes passengers while the 1500 lb rating for the Maverick is for the bed capacity only. Passenger payload rating on the Maverick is separate.
I would go for the maverick simply because it doesn't have that moronic slant to the top of the bed. There is absolutely nothing beneficial about it, and anyone that has tried to tie down something on top of a gen 1 honda ridgeline bed knows what an absolute pain it is.
It's there because it's difficult to make the structure rigid without that. That's why you saw it on the Avalanche and Ridgeline. And it is a major PITA if you use your bed. Honda eventually figured it out, and Ford has too. Hyundai either took the cheap way out or chose form over function.
All in all a fantastic break down of both vehicles. Only criticism is your contradiction: Early on you say the Santa Cruz looks like a vehicle that was built 5 years in the future...at the end you say it won't age well? How can it not age well if it looks like it's from the future.
And the Santa Cruz can tow a few thousand more lbs with the upgraded engine. 7,000lbs I believe. Those suckers are pretty fast too. I've seen some drag race videos to get an idea of their 0 to 60 and it's pretty darn respectable.
@@christophermetz1550 But does the Santa Cruz's 650 pound weight limit in the bed apply to tongue weight? Because if so you'll never hit that 7K max. Hyundai doesn't seem to be being upfront about their hauling and towing capabilities.

Not a teen, but in my mid 20s. I prefer the Maverick's design by far. The Sante Cruz looked more modern when it came out, but it's already looking a little dated. The maverick looked a little basic at first, but seems to get better looking the more I look at it.
If you're talking about power the Santa Cruz has two engines a base 2.5 Litre and a Turbo 2.5 Litre.. most Korean vehicles they said wouldn't age well are still turning heads to this day.. as u see one u know what it is..

I don't really care for trucks but If I had to pick oneI would go for the Hyundai. Every one is so amazed at the low price of the Maverick and it is priced well with some decent drivetrain options. However, everyone knows that an inexpensive Ford equals junk. To produce this vehicle at a value price you better believe that there are cost cutting materials everywhere in this vehicle. This truck will probably fall apart in a few years just like so many of Ford's low price cars like the Fiesta, Focus, Escort etc. The only decent vehicles that Ford makes is the 150 and the Mustang.

The Santa Cruz is just cool and new, like you said it's 5 yrs in the future vs 5 yrs in the past styling wise.
The Maverick is NOT traditional Ford because it is unibody rather than two parts, cab and bed, on frame. It has a car like ride because of independent suspension instead of a solid rear axle. It's like a Honda Ridgeline in that respect, and there is no other American truck that is like it!
You are really stepping up your game! I enjoy your design deep dives and now you are adding more "big picture" discussion as well. Glad to be a subscriber!
If I want a truck for going off road and having a lot of power I am going to buy a f-150 or ranger. If I want a versatile vehicle that gets excellent fuel mileage at a great price I am buying the Maverick. My parents ordered one to replace their Buick Regal rather than their Silverado. 191 hp is plenty of power to get granny and gramps to the grocery store and they have a bed if they want to swing by home Depot as well.
PS the lights in the tailgate will mean down the line they will have to be repaired due to the action of opening and closing as well as dropping things onto the tailgate to lift it into the bed .. Higher cost

You kind of finished off the end comparisons pretty poorly. The comparison between the two base engines aren’t as cut and dry. The base engine of the Maverick is nice when it comes to power and MPG. But the drawback is it only comes in FWD not AWD like you said. And since you said you disliked FWD you should be comparing the two turbo engines in which the Santa Cruz beats out the Ford. The only thing I take away from all of that is 40 miles per gallon in the city with a compact truck. I don't think you need to say anymore.
Only thing that sucks is....they ain't making another hybrid until 2023. Bummer. So I got the Santa Cruz. Oh well

Literally everywhere I've been recently I see people staring at it 😂
I had a 20 hear old tuscon that I owned for 10 years that I upgraded from so it's a weird feeling lol
The Hyundai is very "heavely" styled meanwhile the Ford is simple and robust. Pretty much two trucks for different type of people
The Santa Cruz has an optional turbocharged version of the engine with 281 HP and 311 ft lbs of torque. It also has a higher towing capacity 3500/5000 vs 2000/4000 for the low end/high end models.
Ford Maverick looks like it's from early 2000's GM.
Hyundai Santa Cruz looks like it's from 2025 Hyundai.
Agreed
The last new Hyundai I bought literally burnt to the ground after the year I bought it, make all the Ford jokes you want, but I’ve owned four, and they have never let me down
As for the the video, the hybrid Ford trounces the base four cylinder Hyundai in mpg, and still provides the same HP, and it’s ditto for the more powerful option, the EcoBoost is more potent that the Santa Cruz upgraded engine.
I agree
Less is more - the market is flooded with over teched/priced vehicles, it's refreshing to have the option to get a back to basics vehicle without having to buy somthing used 15/20 years old.
Maverick looks like a 4yr old was told to draw a truck
Yes ! 5 months to replace the transmission
Maverick for the hybrid. The tail light thing happens all the time with vehicles that have hatches. A typical truck doesn't do this, in the off chance you drive with the tail gate removed...
Yeah, or drive with the tailgate down. Must be only non-essential lights on the tailgate I suppose.
I'm gonna wait till they make the hybrid AWD. Only major mistake ford made with this was limiting the hybrid to 2wd.

New ranger will have a more boxy design, and thus, be more attractive and rugged looking.
Ugh. The Maverick is a boring design. No soul.
Santa cruze is just lovely
Correct just lovely in rest is Tucson with open trunk!
The Santa Cruz has a turbo option that bests the Maverick's turbo if you're going to compare apples to apples.
It ain’t apples to apples. Hyundai, in their infinite stupidity, decided to pair their turbo with a piece of shit DCT tranny which WILL
break down (it’s just a matter of when). So, for anyone with sense, this makes the SC turbo package a non option.
No I’m buying a Ford Maverick with the Hybrid I don’t care about power I want 41 mpg

Lincoln could always have a Blackwood trim on any model. But I don’t see a model in that segment for Lincoln.
Okay y’all are making some good points. If anything, it should probably be based on the Lightning
The Maverick is way too small for that. Only the F 150 would be suitable for that treatment.

I'm a fan of more square/traditional designs like the G-Wagon or even a Cherokee too but the Maverick is deliberately under-designed so that it won't take away too many sales from the Ranger, F150, etc. while the Santa Cruz, not having any in-house competition, is in full effort mode.

Santa Cruz built in Alabama, Maverick in Mexico. I believe in supporting American workers.

Damn good job, on the info, @Why Not. Thx

@@bondgabebond4907 not true. I ordered one and they did not jack up the price.
@@artprince9163 Congrats. Glad to hear this news. I remember the PT Cruiser was released and some were so anxious to get it they paid $30,000 for a $13,000 car. Amazing. BTW, what is the wait for receiving it?
@@bondgabebond4907 maverick xlt, hybrid, with a package of sorts, plus destination and sales tax = just about 30k
I really like the understated handsome design of the Maverick. I think it really works for what they're trying to accomplish with the pickup.
the tailgate lights on the Santa Cruz are a cool idea but I wouldn’t want that on a practical truck. I’d say they’re both nice but both are for very different buyers.
10:11 Yep lights in the tail gate is a bad idea because people will be slamming that shut often, which can damage electronics over time. Just sounds like a long term headache to me
Santa Cruz is superior design, build, and quality. No brainer.
If you liked the Subaru BRAT (nobody did) then buy the Hyundai. But if you want a truck buy the maverick
Biggest difference no one talks about….warranty. Hyundai warranty blows every other brand away
I'd buy a Santa Cruz N
The 2.5 turbo is already 40K an N would be 45-50, no thanks.
@@aktsly9237 I got mine at MSRP of 41k but you have to remember your also paying for luxury while the Maverick is very plain on the inside. But that up to the individual and their wallet. I love my Santa Cruz.
@@Spacebornekiller Luxury? if anything you just prefer the interior looks. There's nothing there you aren't getting on the lariat luxury package...Which really between the two trucks it's really just the one you like the looks of more......
@@aktsly9237 sorry but the maverick’s “luxury” version looks like a Tonka Toy on the inside. But if that’s what you like then that’s what you like. I personally would never buy a maverick or any other truck for that matter. I find them hideous. Santa Cruz fits all my needs and likes. And at the end of the day that’s all that matters. You don’t like it or the price dont buy it. You’re reasoning for not buying something is your choice and opinion.
@@Spacebornekiller True, but I don't think you've actually seen the interior of the lariat luxury, I'd google it, it looks nothing like the orange accent xlt
wish you discussed more about the functionality and specs more. the body lines were cool but not a big determination in how i make a decision. researched the Maverick a lot, guess i'll just watch some Santa Cruz videos to see more about that one, was hoping to just see how they stacked up more than visual comparison, guess these types of trucks may invoke a consumer such as yourself that is infatuated with design s its a new generation of truck owners with these trucklet options but i still wish to know the hard specs and can skip the design stuff.
if this is the market for me... it's not I need more bed and, a bigger engine... BUT if it were my market, Santa Cruz wins this for me no question... I actually want this vehicle... just doesn't fit my needs.
I eventually decided on ordering the Ford Maverick for pretty much the same reasons outlined in this video I can't wait to pick it up :)
Santa Cruz needs hybrid design. The turbo is 285 HP and tows 5,000 lbs. Payload is 100lbs more than Maverick.
The slant tells you it’s just a toy and not a work truck
So the Escape based Mav is now a work truck because the designers only knew how to draw 90 degree corners. Interesting logic.
It's there because it's difficult to make the structure rigid without that. That's why you saw it on the Avalanche and Ridgeline. And it is a major PITA if you use your bed. Honda eventually figured it out, and Ford has too. Hyundai either took the cheap way out or chose form over function.
@cavedog Somehow I doubt this account is actually Chris Taylor
@@johnmoore3504 no, because Ford actually thought about how people use the cargo bed.
If not the price, I would go with Santa Fe 2.5T AWD, but the base model Maverick is tempting
All in all a fantastic break down of both vehicles. Only criticism is your contradiction: Early on you say the Santa Cruz looks like a vehicle that was built 5 years in the future...at the end you say it won't age well? How can it not age well if it looks like it's from the future.
Futuristic doesn't mean it looks good now, in retrospect, or even in the future.
the Maverick looks better than the Santa Cruz.
Maverick hands down!
You can get the Santa Cruz with a bigger engine that produces 277 horse power
It 281hp, way more than the ford. Even bigger difference when you look at torque even. 311 with the sante Cruz and only 277 for the maverick.
@@TheOGG1 yeah the Santa Cruz definitely has more power than a maverick
And the Santa Cruz can tow a few thousand more lbs with the upgraded engine. 7,000lbs I believe. Those suckers are pretty fast too. I've seen some drag race videos to get an idea of their 0 to 60 and it's pretty darn respectable.
@@christophermetz1550 But does the Santa Cruz's 650 pound weight limit in the bed apply to tongue weight? Because if so you'll never hit that 7K max. Hyundai doesn't seem to be being upfront about their hauling and towing capabilities.
@@plmn93 yeah that's the catch. I believe it maxes out at 400lbs.
I'm so glad I reserved mine! Super excited even tho I may have to wait 4 - 8 months for it. I hope sooner than later but i think it is worth it. I chose a 2.5 hybrid engine alto blue maverick XLT.
I'm liking that Ford. I think the kids and teens will like the styling of the Hyundai better.
That's because they're clueless,
Not a teen, but in my mid 20s. I prefer the Maverick's design by far. The Sante Cruz looked more modern when it came out, but it's already looking a little dated. The maverick looked a little basic at first, but seems to get better looking the more I look at it.
The Santa Cruz has a 281 hp turbo engine - the upgrade engine. People should avoid the base Santa Cruz engine - definitely underpowered.
Was going to go SEL, but test drove the Limited...there was no turning back.
I test drove the SEL and it was a DOG! Ended up buying a Limited... LOVING IT!
In any angle view Santa Cruz move to next level. Futuristic.
The Maverick Hybrid is said to have a lot of power off the line because you get that electric motor instant torque!
If you're talking about power the Santa Cruz has two engines a base 2.5 Litre and a Turbo 2.5 Litre.. most Korean vehicles they said wouldn't age well are still turning heads to this day.. as u see one u know what it is..
I get 3-5 compliments a day on mine. And I don't even drive it much. Would I get the same with the Maverick?
The Santa Cruz is Not a Truck, the Maverick is a Mini-Truck, thus Apples vs Oranges. The Santa Cruz is Hyundai version of the discontinued Ford Ranchero and Chevrolet El Camino which neither were consider trucks.
Maverick looks like it wants to be a truck. SC looks like it's in a class of its own
I like the Maverick. Both are cool, but to me the Maverick has a "clean" look.
Santa Cruz just looks way too stupid.
@@kuyre2239 Maverick is so stupid bland. Quality of Ford is very bad! Fact! I used to own Ford 500 but quality is bad and I’m tired going back and forth to the dealer.
Meh...it's a Ford.
Ford is as exciting as artificially flavored imitation vanilla ice cream and the Santa Crus looks to much Manga. So, I'll take the Santa Crus so I can enjoy my second childhood.
@@reygone776 , sorry to hear that. I have not had that problem.
I really like both. I like the front face of the santacruz, very creative. And its fascinating how ford makes a car which looks big and traditional, like the 2000s f150, but is actually small and kind of retro
I like your videos. just subscribed. I think the maverick could make a great small business vehicle in the city. good bed payload + flat sides for logos + great fuel economy would be good for business on a budget. The Santa Cruz is just cool and new, like you said it's 5 yrs in the future vs 5 yrs in the past styling wise.
Maverick is a real pickup, Santa Cruz is a SUV with trunk.
They are both unibody, so I would say they are either both real pickups or orb they both are not
The Maverick is NOT traditional Ford because it is unibody rather than two parts, cab and bed, on frame. It has a car like ride because of independent suspension instead of a solid rear axle. It's like a Honda Ridgeline in that respect, and there is no other American truck that is like it!
I would buy the Santa Cruz !
It’s all about a buyers preference but I like the Maverick
You are really stepping up your game! I enjoy your design deep dives and now you are adding more "big picture" discussion as well. Glad to be a subscriber!
I'm going with the one I can "a ford "
Higher cost
Huh? What makes you think that? Santa Cruz has a soft open tailgate. It doesn’t slam down at all.
@@sicilianr1 If it is going to be used it'll break down .. Tailgates are one of the first things that need repairing on trucks
@@xadam2dudex I’ve had trucks all my life, can’t say any of the tailgates ever went bad and I’m a GC/environmental/demolition contractor so my trucks get used a lot more then most. 🤷🏻♂️.
Then with all the SUVs on the road why haven't they had problems with the number of times you raise & lower the rear hatch? Cameras and lights are both in the hatch.
@@chrismills-gg5pt who says they haven't ?
You kind of finished off the end comparisons pretty poorly. The comparison between the two base engines aren’t as cut and dry. The base engine of the Maverick is nice when it comes to power and MPG. But the drawback is it only comes in FWD not AWD like you said. And since you said you disliked FWD you should be comparing the two turbo engines in which the Santa Cruz beats out the Ford. Not to mention the Hybrid has a CVT which is also a drawback. The Santa Cruz has a dual clutch on the turbo engine which is also nice. The Maverick is using cheaper materials and is being built in Mexico while the Santa Cruz has better materials and is built in the US. Maverick has limited options between trims and engines
Mmm, FORD/USA/PRICE >>> HYUNDAI/KOREA/DESIGN, Maverick better.
@@hugoviktor Ford Maverick is made in Mexico. Hyundai Santa Cruz is made in Alabama. That’s one of the main reasons why there is a price disparity. Also to me the Maverick design is boring and safe while the Santa Cruz is sporty and modern but that’s just my opinion
I wouldn't call a dual clutch transmission an advantage. Especially over the traditional automatic in the Maverick turbo.
@@hugoviktor Not correct. Ford is made in mexico, with an inferior engine. Hyundai is designed AND Made in the USA, with a vastly superior engine. Santa Cruz better.
The styling of the Santa Cruz is good enough to get this long time GTI driver (I've been driving my MK6 GTI since 2015, and had a MK6 before that from 2011) and into that truck.
The Hundai is modern, new, sleek...
The Ford is just plain doofy looking.
Having lights in the tailgate just means that the more times it's slammed shut, the more likely the lights will malfunction.
I wish there was a hatch behind the seats for longer stuff.
I'm not close to a hyundai dealership so I ordered the Maverick. I think the Bed on the Santa Cruz is slightly to short for easy mountain bike transportation.
i saw some ad where it shown a mountain bike in the back diagonally but they had to take the front tire off lol.
The SC bed is 2” shorter so not much difference at all. The Mav just looks bigger due being squared off design wise.
@@Shishizurui No they didn't. You can get 2 mountain bikes in the back. The front tire goes over the tail gate and they make a cover for the gate.
