    I learned from beauty school that when you get a chemical burn that it is best to put aloe Vera gel on it and it soothes the pain and also heals it Pretty fast too. I actually did this on my sister's hair and it worked wonders on her scalp after that burn.

    Love your channel. After 2 years of going natural and not being happy with my natural hair styles (and the work it takes to detangle/style), I am getting my hair relaxed by Gloria today!! I’m new to Ottawa in the past year and so grateful to you for pointing me in the direction of your stylist. Thanks!

    I agree. I went back natural for 6.5 yrs and the same issues that haunted me when I was relaxed began to haunt me after 2-3 yrs of being natural. I never deep conditioned my hair, never put anything on my ends...I was always flat ironing once it grew out. My hair grew so much thicker and pretty initially because all I did was cornrows with extensions and kept my scalp oiled. But of course when it grew out, I brought out the flat irons and did not properly moisturize my hair. Sooo I am back to the relaxer and learning now that is more about listening to your hair and what it needs. Proper maintenance is key. Relaxers don't always have to be bad unless overdone/overprocessed. And you cannot use excessive heat no matter if you're relaxed or not. Your ends must be cared for, relaxed or not. Deep conditioning is a must, relaxed or not. And yes, natural hair IS a ton of work. I spent hours just washing, detangling, blow drying and flat ironing my hair...And that was without even deep conditioning. lol It is a wonder I still have hair because I never deep conditioned period and my poor ends. Omg lol 😂 Anywho, great video!

    I've been relaxing since 1988. My second go round, the 1st time I relaxed was in HS and what did I know, apparently nothing! As it started to wear off I put in a Toni; which is a perm(ammonium thioglycollate) all my hair started falling like needles off a Christmas tree! The second time around I took the time to educate myself & take my time doing my own hair. I love my fully relaxed hair!

    1. I learned that I didn't need to big chop & that a gradual cut would've worked better for me
    2. being natural is MORE WORK , esp if you're like me and you prefer straightened or roller set styles
    3. I can't stand ANY of the Shea Moisture products!
    4. my hair thrives on glycerine based products year round
    5. my hair is prone to being porous
    6. I should've lost all of my extra weight before going natural😡
    7. my hair grows faster and I retain more hair with Relaxed hair
    8. I enjoy my texture, but my hair is far too coily to do wash n go's...j actually can't stand wash n goods on MY hair although I have the texture for it
    there's more.. but, yeah 😕

      OMG - I hear you about the big chop. I'm a huge advocate of getting rid of dead, unhealthy hair, but I suggest that people find out what works for them first, really find out how to take care of your hair and start trimming away gradually. Better chance of keeping the hair on your head. Great list!

    Thank you for being honest in this video. Personally I'm not fond of Shea Moisture hair products and I find the line to be overrated. I'm currently natural but plan on getting a Japanese cold smoothing treatment, 'aka' Japanese thermal reconditioning, in order to make my hair more manageable by slightly loosening the curl pattern and eliminating frizz. I've been natural for many years and I love my natural hair but the maintenance is too tedious. I don't have the time nor the energy for the constant upkeep of my hair in this point of my life.

    • @StyleDomination
      @StyleDomination  Před 7 lety +2

      LuvBytes07 I totally agree with you, re: maintaining natural hair. It's great for some and not so much for others. While I absolutely love natural hair, at this point, I just cannot manage it.
      I think some Shea Moisture products are great! I'm really fond of their shampoos but that conditioner was truly terrible.

  • @Bindi_Marc
    @Bindi_Marc Před 7 lety +2

    4:39 To mitigate burning you should try basing your scalp. Some people use oil (light or heavy) 3 days before (sometimes the night before). You shouldnt experience burning if your scalp has been prepped for the process.

    I had the same problem with relaxers burning my scalp for years. Then I met a hairdresser who would relax the back of my hair first then wash it out then do the front and wash it out. Then last year I discovered straight from Eden relaxer by creme of nature. It is the first relaxer that I can apply to my entire head without burning.

    I have a love/ hate relationship with that hair masque. The first 2 times I used it my relaxed hair was like buttah. After that it went all down hill. Lessons learned: Not all sulphate free shampoos are made equally lol (some don't clean my hair at all). My hair does not like over stretching (12 weeks is my limit). Too little manipulation isn't great for my hair because then it just tangles and mattes.

    Thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge. Relaxers have come up! It sounds like your stylist is using the lye relaxer formula, and I highly recommend Phyto Specific Hair Relaxer Index 1 no lye relaxer. No chemical burns (though it can be pricy) and just use a chelating shampoo monthly to remove any mineral build up. I haven’t had a chemical burn since the early 2010’s.

I've had my natural hair longer than yours (and extremely thick) and decided to cut it to give myself a break from styling. i have been natural for four years now and I love it soooo much. After four years I'm now 14 inches and the struggle is real to take care of it. Being a mom and leading a busy life, I hate that I have to rush taking care of my hair it is a lot of work especially on wash days. I have been missing the sleek, straight look and feeling for a change so Im thinking of relaxing my hair but not looking forward to burns. thats one reason I had stopped relaxing it was soooo bad.

    Thank you about the Shea moisture deep treatment masque. It's terrible! The worst 'deep conditioner' I've ever used. I know what works for one person might not work for another, but seriously. It really is crap.

    I love this!!!...I've got relaxed hair but I've never taking care of it, I only just decided to take care of my hair about a month ago...I was actually gonna cut all my hair off and go natural thinking that would help but I'm a busy medical imaging student...I've seen videos and realised how expensive and time consuming having a natural hair is so I dropped the thought...and decided to start taking care of the one I've got.
    This helped a lot...realised I'm sort of doing everything you mentioned...I wash my hair ones a week now and put a lot of natural oil treatment in it....all I need are some products to help grow my hair. Cause even though I've got a medium length hair it's really thin....also it doesn't help I got a bald spot from a burnt scar on my left side from relaxing my hair few months back.😭

      @StyleDomination  Před 7 lety +1

      Flo Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about your relaxer scar. Please be careful! I put a little Vaseline on my scalp before relaxers and that helps a lot.

    I've learned my hair likes Natural products like Eden and True.
    I deep condition weekly switching off with products for moisture and protein.
    I do "braidouts" on my relaxed hair for low manipulation.
    My hair has been growing nicely since making these changes in the last year.

    I really want to get my natural hair relaxed sooooo bad. Im too scared to do it myself and its scary having to trust that whoever does it will know how to handle my virgin 4c and know how to handle it properly with a relaxer. I been watching videos and researching for like 3 days now and the more i learn about it the more nervous i get about finding the right stylist to do it. Most of the salons in my area dont really seem like they deal with my kind of hair or they seem sketchy.

    I wore my hair relaxed for 35 years then 3 years ago this month I went natural I will tell you Shea products made my hair dry and I lost a lot of hair my first year of transition because I didn’t know the problem was the product. I spent over the next 2 years hundreds and hundreds of dollars trying to maintain my natural hair that wasn’t doing what everyone else hair was doing on CZcams and also spending over an hour every morning trying to do something with my mess. So a few weeks ago I went back to a relaxer and damn it my hair is breaking and I could just cry. Right now I’m trying to stop it from breaking There were good things about being natural like my hair could get wet and I didn’t care but it wasn’t working for me.
