- Not my usual, but join me for a drive along what is touted as Britain's (joint) steepest road. This single track road runs between Eskdale in the west to the edge of the neighbouring Wrynose Pass in the east. The Hardknott Pass has a maximum elevation of 393 m (1,289 ft) and on a clear day you can see the Isle of Man and the Irish Sea. The road descends steeply at a gradient of 33% (1 in 3) into the Duddon Valley.
On one of my trips through I ended up following a Ferrari Roma which I did not expect to see on such a narrow and twisting road, so good on them. Other things I did not expect to see was a Roman fort builtin in 110 AD.
This road is a must if you are travelling to Scafell Pike for example.

What are other people's favourite driving roads in the UK?
Long hill buxton to whaley bridge
Snake pass glossop to sheffield
My local stomping ground 😎
Winnets pass castleton might be steeper than this
@@jdmking888 nice! Will add that pass to my list of things to do.
It is an experience both wrynose and hardknott pass, I enjoyed it but never again!
Everyone should do it at least once!
😂
Found this drive a bit scary, thought the car was going to flip over😅
I went on a fairly quite day but must be crazy when busy!
I rode this road both ways on a motorcycle several times in the mid 1950s It gets easier when you know it
Amazing, did not see any bikes on the day but there sure are some corners to get round. Good work 👍
I think your SatNav might be faulty, especially if it's telling you that you're in North Yorkshire when you're approaching Hardknott Pass - that's definitely in Cumbria (unless they've moved it of course!)
Hey Dave, thanks for the comment. You are indeed correct and in the video I do actually say it is in Cumbria. Unfortunately early in I announced that I discovered it whilst in Yorkshire, which I was, before driving across. You are the second person to have mentioned this but is is basically impossible to change a video once up.
Eskdale Cumbria, it's not Yorkshire, the one in Yorkshire is Rosedale chimney 👍
Thanks yes, did not explain that bit well and can’t change it now. I happened to be in Yorkshire at the time. Thanks for watching.
Its me again, was just wondering how the disco is going. Last time you said some kind of washing machine broke so you couldn't clean the components?
I thought it would be fun to try and wash the parts in a domestic dishwasher. But both the washer I tried broke, so ended up being a total run around and waste of time. So I have made some progress in a sense as I have got my Mercedes 190 working and back on the road. So can now get back to LR stuff! Start the year as you mean to go on.
@@garage90uk Any progress on the Disco? I'm dying to know
Yes actually! I have all the parts in need and the block and heads are currently at the machine shop! So should get them back in a week or so and can then start putting it back together finally!
@@garage90uk 🥳
@@garage90uk 2 months of silence is killing me 😂 Any updates on the Disco?
Interesting drive. 👍
Any progress on the Discovery engine rebuild?
Man I am sorry it is taking so long for me to get the videos out. I am making progress but slowly. I think about speeding up all the time. What I can say is that I am working on it continuously and it is not something that has stopped.
@@garage90uk
Lol! No worries.
I know how these projects go. Take your time. Unless it is your daily driver, it’s just a hobby. Enjoy the journey!
Be safe and stay well.👍
Hardnot pass isn't in North Yorkshire it is the road that goes to west Cumbria from the lake District
Oh no! I see what has happened. I did not make this clear but I actually live in Suffolk and was in Yorkshire for a do. So I personally discovered Hardknott when I was in North Yorkshire but did not mean it to sound like that is where the pass is geographically. Later on in the video I do explicitly say it is in Cumbria. Thank you for commenting to correct the ambiguity.
@@garage90uk that's ok I thought I had better just add where it was geographically for other people to be aware. I've been over Hardnot pass and it's certainly not for the faint hearted but it's definitely an experience. My lasting memories of the pass are the vast drops and the size of the sheep at the bottom of the valley from the road at the top. They look like little white dots. They used to close it in the winter too because it is so dangerous to cross in icy conditions. But it is also used as the main road to get from the lakes to Muncaster on the west coast so is quite busy!
@@britbazza3568 an experience for sure. I think I was lucky in that the road had other users but was not swapped at the time. Certainly an avoid in the winter!
