You call the company (almost everyone has it on their phone because it's a large and subsidized business), they send a car with two people, one driver drives you and your car to your destination and then you pay and then the driver hops back into the company car and drives off. It's 1.5 x the rate of a normal taxi and is a godsend for going out drinking.

      Eh, I don't mind it - because I'll stick to my 50-year-old car that I added heated seats to on my own. Actually, come to think of aftermarket heated seats, I wonder if people will come up with mods to bypass these systems, say for the heated seats to re-wire them directly into the car's electrical system with a manual switch instead of using the computer? Regardless of the subscription fee, just having a manual switch would be an upgrade on its own. Would surely void warranties, but would probably be something people would do the moment the warranty expires. Companies will try to stop it, but at some point even corporate-dictated US laws will protect consumers' right to modify the stuff they (supposedly) own.

    I think some of these subscriptions are fine, in particular the Toyota remote connect and GM OnStar, because they're services that do cost the companies money. The Toyota fee covers the cellular service and data to connect the car to the internet and start/lock/monitor with a phone app. Without the subscription the fob and remote start still works but only the traditional radio remote fob like a normal car. Also, with Toyoya you get their version of OnStar where you press the button and talk to a live person, who obviously gets paid. Sounds fair to me. However, as an owner of two Toyotas with it, I think it's stupid and won't be subscribing once the trial period ends.

    The OnStar one makes sense to me because you're paying for access to a cellular network which is required for the feature to work as well as the people who run the service, although I'm not sure how this feature is still relevant in 2023 when pretty much everyone has a cell phone. Same thing with the chauffeur; after all, that person has to be paid for their time. But things like heated seats are literally just paywalling the enablement of hardware that is sitting in the car already, thus making the ongoing cost to the manufacturer literally $0. That's just ridiculous and thus anything they are paid for these "services" is 100% profit.

Also one to the lady who was smoking Marlboros, drinking Faygo and eating pizza wanting me to turn on her Acadia so she could drive it to the police station to have them break open the windows and unlock the door from the inside switch so she could get out of her car.

      As OnStar is an ongoing service that requires data plans and actual human workers to provide, it makes sense for that to cost something, unlike the heated seats and extra power that are already there - I see that as kind of a different thing and far more justified. It's more like a service plan than unlocking a feature.

    • @bartbartholomew
      @bartbartholomew Před rokem +22

      OnStar, self driving, and the vehicle swap thing are worth a subscription. In those cases, the company needs to continue to support the service with satellite connection's, updates, or physical exchanges. Ongoing support costs money. The amount they want is more than I would pay for them, but they are worth a monthly fee. They didn't cover remote start with your cell phone, but that would also be worth a subscription. But anything that does not need continuous support from the manufacturer should never be a subscription.
      But starting your car from a key fob, heated seats, and engine performance should never be a monthly fee. Those should be included with the price of the vehicle.

    • @quillmaurer6563
      @quillmaurer6563 Před rokem +1

      @@bartbartholomew My first thought was to agree on the engine performance bit, but someone pointed out that what it really is is a warranty to cover a car being pushed harder. What it could be seen as is a performance option or upgrade with warranty. Such an upgrade, if done aftermarket, would void the powertrain warranty because it increases risk of breaking it. This is the option to have the higher power and warranty, but pay for it, which actually makes sense. It makes sense for this to cost something, as the company is more likely to have to pay for repairs. Basically a question of how fast you want to go, how much you want to stress components, versus how much you want to spend on the warranty that covers said components. This doesn't exist for gasoline cars as visibly, but does indirectly - a performance car will be at greater risk of breaking, and the warranty cost more, but this is included in the purchase price which is already higher due to different hardware, so it's not obvious. This is just pushing the same hardware harder, and can be enabled via software. I'd see it as more defensible if they have the option (even if strongly discouraged) to enable it for free at your own risk, voiding the powertrain warranty, or to enable for free (with warnings that you are risking more repair costs) after the warranty expires.

My problem is if you spec a car to not have them, they fit the hard wear anyway, the extra weight costing you more in decreased fuel efficiency as all the optional extras are fitted anyway. The benefit is to 3 or 4 owners down the line they can switch them on whereas 20 years ago that was almost impossible (I found the wiring in my 82 escort for fog lights, spotlights etc, just no switch and relay, so added switch, relay and aftermarket lights and easy upgrade)

    Here’s a question: if you’re paying a subscription for a car feature, and that feature fails (heated seats stop working, remote start quits working, etc…), is the manufacturer obliged to fix it? You are paying for a service, not a good, at this point, and typically in the service industry, companies are obliged to fix their services when they don’t work.
    For example, the way that Apple’s contract is worded for their operating systems on Mac OS and iOS devices is that you owns a hardware, but you are licensed in the software to that particular device. This means that you do not own that copy of the software, and you cannot legally put it on, an unauthorized device (like a PC or Android). What sucks about that is it makes your hardware difficult to upgrade because you cannot transfer your license to another computer, but the benefit of that is when a bad version comes out, and Apple is obliged to fix the problems that are created by said bad version.
    If the heaters in BMW’s seats fail, does BMW have to fix the heaters for free so that you can continue paying for your subscription service?

    I'm not giving up my 23 year old Mercury panther platform! I'm keeping it until I croak! What is most galling that I haven't heard anyone talk about yet is that you're paying for these things to be installed in the car no matter what, then to use it you have to pay to activate the thing that cost a lot to install in the car. I think we need to legislate that out of existence, but since I'm not giving up what I bought in 2013 for $3500, it doesn't really matter to me. Ultimately, people just have to refuse to buy these things, which I can't understand hasn't happened already. $80k to $100k for pickup trucks is beyond belief, but all so real.

    I am not sure how I feel about DLC options. Yes, at first the idea seems to suck. But in fact, they are not charging you for the installed option at the time you purchase the car. But in fact are including the option to enable it based on subscription.
    My thoughts are this. IF they offer at the time of purchase the option at added price, but also give you the option to not pay the extra price but in fact subscribe or not subscribe to it, then I think its fine. You as the consumer lose very little as you have the power to buy it at the start, or lease the function if you really want it. That is giving a choice to you.
    If they do not offer to buy this option at the start for the extra money and only give you the subscription choice, then I would say its a bad thing.
    Lets say you are in a area where winters are not severe. You could then choose not to take the subscription, but once in a while the weather does get really cold, so you subscribe now and then for a month here and there. Thats not bad.
