  • PR Knot Vs. FG Knot | The Results Are SHOCKING | Slow Pitch Jigging Knots | Break Test | Johnny Jigs
The Page Ranking Knot (PR Knot) Vs. Fine Grain Knot (FG Knot) has been a hot topic of discussion around the JohnnyJigs shop. After dropping our first video and reading your comments, we decided that we needed to settle the score once and for all. What knot is the best. We tied each knot to a single piece of leader and played tug of war until one end broke. In the end the winner was clear.
We use both of these knots in the slow pitch jigging world. The fact that they are streamline and strong makes them perfect for the smaller guides on a jigging rod. The strength of each knot makes them desirable and at the end of the day we recommend tying the one you are most comfortable with.

I was told about the strength of the pr knot, but I did not bother and continued using Alberto or fg.
Now I managed to tie the pr using only a sinker and managed to do it.
I tried to break the line and it never failed from the knot. I was amazed and sure this is the strongest and unbreakable knot

There is simple variant on the PR knot that makes the knot to break always over 100% and almost never on the knot itself. The trick is to make the first few turns of the braid around the monofilament (min 3:30 to 3:47 in the previous video, the first part of the knot) more spaced apart (about 1/3 inch). Then come back tight as you did. Please try it and let me know if the knot is stronger that way.

You guys need to use a 6-8 turn Rizzuto finish on your knots instead of multiple opposing overhand knots. The Rizzuto finish doesn't dig into the fluoro and allows (in this case) the FG Knot to do the work, while properly locking in the FG knot to keep it from unraveling. The way most fo overhand knots and cinches ech one down actually becomes the knot (each individually) instead of allowing the chinese finger locking system to evenly spread the pressure over the entire knot. I use a 20 turn simplified FG knot using the Rizzuto finish. It's quick and easy, even on the water and have never had a failure with it. I live in Florida and have taken multiple big fish with that knot, including giant tarpon with it. No issues!

Should I do 2 hitch knots then pulling the fg knot and then finish with the rizzuto or just straight to rizutto then pulling the fg knot?

    • @podocrypto6072
      @podocrypto6072 Před rokem +1

@@escaaaaaa893 Definitely do the 2 individual opposing 1/2 hitch knots to lock it in, then do the Rizzuto finish knot on behind that and cinch that one down pretty good. Sometimes when I have the time and patience, I'll put a small drop of super glue on the Rizzuto finish knot only (not the rest of the FG or SC knot) to really lock in that Rizzuto finish knot and help keep it from slipping apart (not slipping due to the pressure, but due to constantly being thrown thru your rod guides, like throwing heavy jigs or plugs).

One of these days, I wanna learn both pr and fg knots. I have just used a blood knot because it's simple to tie. The blood knot is definitely not as good for tying two lines that are not close to each other in diameter. I'm old school but haven't tied a lot of rigs in years. I learned a Bimini knot years ago, I don't remember how to tie it without looking it up but yeah, I need to learn that again too. Time to go back to knot school. I think I saw some kind of tool that is supposed to help tying the FG knot, I need to look that up again as well. Sorry for rambling here in the comments, but this is really cool to me, we didn't have the internet back when I learned to tie fishing knots, we used fishing magazines, books, and old salts. Now I've become an old salt, but I like Bass Fishing 2...jimi

Say the FG breaks at 28# and the PR at 29# (hypothetical), I will still go with the FG cause I can tie it fast and easily without any other gear. look up the video of the guy with the pinky finger tension tie of the FG!

Great job guys! I had been tying fg knots for years until Chris showed me how to tie the pr in the shop. I am still learning, but have moved all my braided outfits to pr knots (inshore and offshore) and there is no doubt the pr is far superior.
We have been fishing inshore hard (to windy for my body offshore of late), but no failures. 20 pound braid, 15 pine floro, fishing small tarpon, reds, trout, snapper and permit.
It looked like all the knot breaks are on the finish. That is what I had seen historically. Are we simply heating things up too much synching tight?
    Need to lubricate better?

I started using the PR a year ago when I watched the original test video, and I've had only one break. It was when I initially tested the knot with 30lb Spiderwire 8strand and a 30lb flouro leader. The line broke at 27lbs, about 12 inches from the knot. Other than that, I'm onto my 2nd season confident in my PR knots for all my braid to flouro or mono connections. I have yet to see a knot beat it in any test on CZcams.

Hi Guys, I used to use the FG knot but have since gone to a knot called the SC knot. Now this knot is far quicker and smaller to tie than both the PR and FG knots. My finished knot is usually around 5/8"" long. My version of this knot is only 10 turns of doubled braid then a single half hitch in the middle followed by a 10 turn rizuto finish. Typically I join 20 or 30lb braid to 60 or 80lb mono leader. If tied correctly the knot will be as strong as the mainline. For interests sake give it a try. CZcams has examples of this knot if you don''t know how to tie it. Cheers from OZ.

I’m not sure it would make a difference, but I think it would be more realistic to use heavier braid and lighter mono/ fluoro, since that would be the most common real world application. The braid broke in most of your tests, so it would be interesting to see what would happen with lighter mono/ fluoro than braid

@bringit3164 it's very easy to just use a splice needle, serve, and tie the tag end. I'm regularly targeting YFT from 30 fathoms to 100 fathoms. It works really well and is easy enough to do out on the boat. I really like how smooth it is. Last week I hooked into 3 different galapagos and white tip sharks and it held for all of them. I'd recommend trying if you're interested

@bringit3164 I splice 80# daimond hollowcore braid to 100lb momoi Xtra hard mono about 6ft up the braid, and I have 4 fathoms of mono below the main line. That connects to a swivel with 1ft of 250lb mono to act as a chaff/bite guard for the toothy pelagics. Connected to that is usually a 350gr-400gr jig with two assist hooks. It's been a very reliable setup for me

So if it’s not holding , I’d say ya need more practice. I’ve got thirty pound Striper and never failed me or anyone I’ve tied for.
