    Hi,I am from India and yes an Indian.Kohl here is called Kajal in Hindi. And where you have mentioned in your video, the kohl pencil is rubbed from inner corner to outter corner of the eye, keeping it closed while application, that is called soorma. On application of soorma, the eyes tend to get watery, but that's fine, it purifies the eyes and gives the eyes a full and beautiful look. We Indians love using kajal and a makeup look without kaajal is incomplete. Love all your videos and watch them all. Cheers

    This was a fantastic video Lisa! Being from India, where kohl is a part of a girl's everyday makeup, it's incredible to see how it was made and applied in the prehistoric times. Here, traditionally, kohl is also made by smearing ghee on the back of a banana leaf, and placing that on top of an oil lamp for the ghee to burn, and the soot is used as kohl.

    • @wearmeout1
      @wearmeout1 Před 8 lety +9

      +Debasree Banerjee slight correction, ancient egypt isn't prehistoric. prehistoric would be, quite literally, "before history". so, like, humans living in caves, etc.

      +Lisa Eldridge Indeed incredible! I am Aramean (Middle East) and my grandmother - to this day - uses thin bendable candles made by monks and nuns to create an eye kohl that have"healing effects" for your eyes. She just lights the candle under a lid of a pan (e.g.) and uses soot as eye kohl :)

    Absolutely amazing insight into the khol story. I am indian and love wearing khol. I find the Indian ones (similar in shape to the maybelline khol) to be more waxy in texture which makes sense with the hot climate. I have a powder khol too which is called 'Surma' (pronounced SoR-Maah) which comes in a intricate steel pot with a delicate steel thread rod. The trick is to put the rod in between both inner rims of the lashes and press your eyes shut tight, then drag the rod through slowly. It's like tightlining but you do both water lines in one go.

    Fascinating video! I'm not one to argue with the professionals, but I was wondering if perhaps the two cartridges in the kohl case would be used to contain the dry mixture in one side and the caster oil in the other? Using the stick to dip in either side before applying; as opposed to containing different colours of the kohl? Would that make application easier? Really interesting stuff!

    I am so grateful that you've made this video and written your book! I'm an Archaeology undergraduate in my third year, currently writing my dissertation. I'm writing it on Ancient Egyptian cosmetic artefacts and how from the designs and motifs on the artefacts you can perceive a sense of identity, particularly focusing on the transgenderal use of cosmetics in the society. The literature on the subject is very dry, with almost no modern input. However, I feel so blessed that your book and videos have coincided perfectly with my dissertation, as they've been very resourceful (and inspirational!) for my subject. I just want to say thank you! Hi Lisa, It was wonderful watching this video. In India we make fresh Kohl everyday for our babies. We light the silver lamp of clarified butter (Ghee) and catch its flame on a silver bowl. After cooling it down a bit we mix small amount of ghee into it and apply the same kohl with our ring finger to the babies as well as mother. It is said that it protects the eyes from infections and it cools down the eyes too.

    Unlike other Beauty CZcams channels, I was attracted to the calmness I get the first time I see your video. They are the kind of videos I enjoy watching so much for both education and relaxation. And when I'm mean education here, I do mean REAL education. You and Wayne Goss, oh my god, the best of the bests. The way your makeup is elegant and sometimes dramatic in a settle way really speaks on behalf for you, that you are truly a professional and most of all, an artist. I souly appreciate the existence of your channel, Lisa.

    Lisa is amazing because she actually informs us about the history, culture and revelations of makeup. She is so intelligent and reverent. I will forever watch your videos and respect you as a makeup artist. Thank you for taking your time and doing this for us. And for always, staying true and not fitting the mold.
