    Ithmid kohl goes by other names, such as Surma or kajal, and is known throughout the middle east as a traditional eyeliner. Ithmid is made from the stone ore of Galena, which is lead sulfide. There is a confusion as to whether Ithmid is made from Antimony Sulfide or Lead Sulfide, but the reality is that the kohl stone that has been used for thousands of years on the eyes is Galena.
    Powderd Galena is actually quite safe to use as an kohl eyeliner, because it is a lead salt with every low solubility, and therefore does not easily become absorbed into the human body. You would have to eat it to have any significant absorption of lead from it. So don't eat it!.
    Finally, Ithmid Kohl is recommended for us to use by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It sharpens the vision and elongates the eyelashes, as is famously known by the Middle Easterners given that its usage is prevalent there.

    Assalaamu alaykum,
    I was recently reading up on how easy it can be for people (especially children) to get lead-poisoned. Just small amounts of flaking paint in their vicinity is enough to cause permanent brain damage. I am wondering, how safe is it then to use lead sulfide (assuming it is this, instead of antimony) every day?
    JazakAllahu khayr!

    • @RaqibZaman
      @RaqibZaman  Před 3 lety +7

      The form of the lead dictates its effect and toxicity. Lead Paint contains lead chromate, lead oxide, and lead carbonate. These are highly bio-available. Meaning they easily absorb into the body.
      For galena, you should not eat it- and its not meant to be eaten. But otherwise lead sulfide haw a very low solubility and low bio-availability.

      It depends on who the seller is, because the quality of ithmid also depends on the stone or material they choose to make the ithmid. I made my own ithmid, so at least I am sure of the quality.
