@@NorthWestern1919 Is it just me or did I hear that you got lead poisoning from chewing on the coupler of a trackmaster James produced between 2005-2007?
@@wot2343 That's where you'd be wrong. The James that I chewed on was made in 1998. Now that I'm older, I make sure to take great care in preserving this historical artifact.

lmfao
no one talks about the main theme as much, it quite seriously is on par with mike and junior's compositions for me!
dangerously underrated.
KOTR, TOTB and SLOTLT had to wait a looong time for me to finally sit down and watch them properly as they came out during my hiatus from the franchise. As of writing this, I think TOTB is my favourite of these three but only slightly ahead of Lost Treasure. Simply because it wowed me the most and the characters don’t feel underused or over the top. More detail about this will be given in the future though, I’m sure!
I like this movie, but I really like HOTR.
Not only it was a big step from Series 17 and KOTR, but TOTB always had that special spark on it, from the music to the animation and how they combine the two of them, for example the opening sequence before the credits where Thomas almost dies and Bill & Ben save him, the music for that scene is inmaculate, not to mention Cranky stoping the ship and the Landslide scene and music. Great video nonetheless, I really enjoy the treatment TOTB is having now :)
Love your work dude, keep it up!
And yes, the soundtrack is really great, it isn't insanely masterful for me, but what it does is it really fits the style of the movie and as you say it works seamlessly with the animation. I think it's safe to say that there would have been no Lost Treasure without TOTB.
Just want to mention i hate it when people say series instead of season.
No offense.
@@morganallenjonesregularstu6824tbh in my opinion KOTR is better than TOTB
I first saw Clive Mantle (Gator's voice actor) in a miniseries called "The Poseidon Adventure", a modern-day remake of the 1972 disaster film of the same name, which involves an ocean liner being capsized by a rogue wave on New Year's Eve. In my opinion, the miniseries wasn't as good as the original movie (the ship literally capsizes because of a bomb, and not a rogue wave in this version), which is a classic, but I was still glad to see an actor I recognized in Thomas.
It is also a film about love and friendship. And this is also a very important emotional line, when none of the loved ones supported Percy. Only Gator understood him, and Percy's heart opened gratefully towards his strong and kind friend. A very strong arch of two very different, but very close creatures.
I decided to watch TOTB again, partially because of this video. And I have to say, I gained a new appreciation for it. I would say that it is probably the most heartwarming movie of the series. Of course, TATMR tried to be heartwarming, but let's be honest, it's too stupid to take seriously.
And if I'll be honest, Marion in this movie is just so lovable. She just wants to dig, and by God, she's gonna dig!
Glad you said “most popular,” it’s disappointing that Mattel and *some* fans *barely* give it any attention! And for that, it made the special criminally underrated and unforgivably overlooked!
This special was Percy at his finest since probably season 5! It was supposed to *finally* erase his timid kid that’s been prominent since season 6, and they were doing so well during season 18 & 19! But then for *no* reason, Mattel decided to retcon it in one of the *worst* CGI episodes *period* and my most *personal* hated (Three Steam Engines Gruff)!
I personally don’t get the hate James got from some fans, it’s *healthy* for friends to argue and get on each other’s nerves! When he does feel remorse for his actions, you want him to make amends with Percy, you want him to apologize for his behavior, but *no,* a quarter of fans continue to criticize his actions for being “mean-spirited,” give me a break!
Gator is a really unique character, I just wish they would at least mention him once or twice per season after S18 instead of wait *five years!* Anyway, he’s truly a fantastic foil to Percy. And if I’m being honest, unlike Hiro’s goodbye, Gator’s was more rewarding because he hasn’t appeared after S18.
I ❤️ Marion! She’s hilarious, and as a person who also tends to be a bit of a chatterbox, I say she’s relatable! Olivia Colman was spot on every time she voiced her and I will not hear otherwise! As much as I love Ned (he’s my favorite member of The Pack), Marion is just as good. Kind of wish they wrote an episode where they become friends, they’re both Steam shovels after all.
“Let’s Be Brave” ruined the emotional tone of the ending, and to think I used to like that song the first time I saw this special.
I agree with a lot of this, it was underrated in the past but I feel it's getting more popular.
James is way too much of a dick, even more than usual. The plot isn't connected well. The whole clay pits could have cut. Thomas is the ok character.
In fairness Three Steam Engines Gruff regressed Toby as well when the Brenner era was downplaying his scaredy engine persona. It's such a weird outlier in Season 20, arguably the PEAK of CGI Thomas (Season 21 arguably is to if you disregard what it's foreshadowing to). Letters to Santa and Engine of the Future show Percy still being handled well.
I love how when watching tale of the brave, It's such an emotional rollercoaster.
James makes me mad
Some scenes are funny
The song makes me tear up
And the avalanche is epic
A wise king once said, being brave, doesn't mean you go looking for trouble.
Easily my favorite CGI only characters are Hiro, Connor, and Catlin. This isn't saying Gator isn't awesome too, but Hiro, Connor and Catlin have interesting and elegant designs, and unique personalities
And it's another great one! Gator is one of my favorite new characters from the CGi series and the China Clay Pits is an amazing place indeed.
Tale Of The Brave is A Great Movie. And I Think You Nailed it in the Video!
I like how, tne the previous movies before this one that it felt like the engins were reading a script, whereas in this and later Brener movies make them sound like they actually talk freely.
My favorite Thomas Movie .
I will never see this movie the same again!
damn im early
great review as always, TOTB is a really awesome film - looking forward to your TUGS vid!

Here's mine:
20, 21, 18, 17, 19
SLOTLT, TAB, JBS, KOTR, TOTB, TGR, BWBA (since it was also written by Brenner)
This is a really nice video. I definitely think the Tidmouth dialogue scenes are solid in this movie, as are the morals and action sequences. BMM and TOTB are probably the movies that best handle secondary characters. And just a small thing, but I agree Stephen is one of the best CGI-only characters (along with Glynn and Ryan)
i just realized cranky got a brave act too i knew that he would be in danger from hoocking up the ship but did not let go
screw thomas being number one! give that to cranky!
Everything about this movie is great...except Thomas, big surprise there. For someone who claims to be Percy's best friend he is remarkably unaware of his feelings and how he reacts to being dismissed
Have to disagree. Thomas isn't sure what he saw at the claypits and this alters his attitude throughout the movie. He disowns Percy a bit because he simply isn't sure Percy can be trusted to know what he saw... which given past events isn't exactly wrong.
@@TheThomasCynic The issue is the inconsistent character development. Think of how many times over Thomas needed to learn to trust his friends instead of just dismissing them. Especially because this is a very similar setup to Day of The Diesels, a movie that predated TOTB by only 3 years
I was just listening to an audiobook of FNAF the silver eyes, but I wanted to watch this more
Great stuff as usual. Hyped for the Tugs video! Keep up the good work 🙃🙂
One odd detail I notice that makes Percy's CGI form feel more authentic than the other main characters, his eyebrows. They're so articulate. Look at Thomas' for example, they're just triangles that bob up and down, making his range feel more limited than his model counterpart, even when you can tell the animators are trying as hard as they can with him (they can't even really furrow properly, which is a hinderance since a lot of model Thomas' top expressions were him being a grouch). Percy can almost match his model in terms of expressiveness however.
I only ever found this film average until I went back and had a proper look into it.
If I’m being honest when I watched tale of the brave back when I was a kid I barely understood the plot but it’s still a decent movie
Tbh I forgot basically everything about this movie until The Unlucky Tug’s ranking video a few months back
2:57 Stephen is not only a CGI character he is in the RWS as well but he did not have any speaking roles or any personality traits
Yes! Finally giving it some more love! (Also, did you see Victor Tanzig’s community post?)
Of course! Pretty insane to be featured by him.
Thoughts (yes I know I’m commenting late this time):
1. I really wish they brought back BoCo rather than introducing Timothy.
2. I love how Brenner brought back Bill and Ben’s heroic side by writing the initial landslide scene.
3. I honestly love Marion, and can’t believe they got Olivia Colman to voice her.
4. Possibly the only thing I don’t like about Tale of the Brave is how unreasonable Percy acts towards Thomas. In my opinion, I think Thomas should have just had his “Thomas Percy and the Coal” personality and shut Percy down entirely. That would have made his character arc by the end better, and made Percy more justified.
5. Also, rather than a scrap monster, what if James just left some trucks of scrap metal on the tracks and Percy gets scared because the sight of scrap is terrifying for an engine like him.
Hi Thomas Cynic, great video, I really enjoyed it. I have an idea for you for a future video. Can you do a ranking of all Thomas seasons 1-24. You can just give small talking sections were you talk about why the season is good or bad. I would love to see that
Awesome will you ever do an everything wrong series? Also love the new intro😀
Nice
I love the movie!
And sometimes scrap is from engines so James could be scaring people with corpses
Correct me if I'm wrong
I understand why you and many others love this movie, but it honestly wasn't for me. I'll quickly address the pros and cons I have with it
Pros:
-Thomas' role in the movie is on par with his role in BMM, he has a reason to be in the plot and it sets up pretty much everything
-Bill & Ben were amazing in this movie and I wish this was their reintroduction aside from that one season 17 episode
-This movie is visually stunning, if I were judging these movies in terms of visuals alone, this would have made my top 3
-Before James gets pulled into the main plot the story with Thomas and Percy on their own would work great if it was just them, it actually feels natural
-The crashes and avalanches in this movie are amazing as well, really has you on the edge of your seat
-Gator & Marion are fun and actually serve a purpose in the movie
Cons:
- Percy was easily my least favorite part about the movie, I never liked his hypochondriac personality they gave him ever since season 6, I know this movie tried to end his scaredy arc, but it's somewhat fails considering what came afterwards in the BWBA era. Also the scene with him getting mad at Thomas for literally no reason is the worst scene in the entire movie, no contest
-James' is way too mean in this, he does have some funny lines here or there but I feel like the story could have worked best without him, as I've said earlier before he gets pulled to the main plot the story actually feels natural
-Timothy & Reg, despite their interesting designs, are pointless as hell and serve no purpose in the story
-Cranky's scene, although really shines in his character, is utterly pointless especially that they could have very easily kept Percy on the ship and just have them be unloaded after Thomas tries to talk to him, then they both go off into the clay pits to find James and that could be when the climax happens
I don't dislike this movie as it does have a lot of redeeming stuff about it, but it just didn't really work out that well for me in terms of storytelling and is somewhat flanderization of two of the most beloved main characters. 5/10
I agree I don't much like Percy post-model era, but in terms of CGI canon this movie did him well. I also agree that Timothy and Reg (particularly Reg since they didn't do much with him after TOTB) are pretty pointless. However, on balance this movie makes my top 5.
Great analysis though!
Thanks man! Out of curiosity how would you rank all the movies from best to worst
@@fairlyoddenginecreations I remember TTC told me when I asked him, however, I don’t know if his mind has changed, but here it is:

5. Tale Of The Brave
6. Hero Of The Rails

Yes the one I wanted! Great video as always and question what’s your opinion on Luke and duke? Personally I feel Luke is superior but that’s a very difficult thing for me to type so I’d probably make a video one day on it, but I want to know what yours is
I like these surprise videos
Not really a surprise lol, you can typically expect me to upload once a week, occasionally missing a week here or there.
Ok
I'm not as big a fan of this movie than others. I'm not really sure why. Maybe I should rewatch it. Great video!
This movie took place in “Toad’s Big Idea”.
Gotta say Cynic ur new intro is beautiful
I have nothing much to say except niceeeeeeeeeeww
I had seen this film when I was thirteen, during my stage of puberty and I didn't think much of it. It was just something that I watched on a few Friday nights along with Markiplier playing Five Nights at Freddy's 1 and 2. Rewatching it again last Saturday, I felt that the show should have ended with this film as it felt like there wasn't anywhere else to take these characters, and knowing how the films that came out after this one made Thomas' character feel like he had regressed (especially in Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure), the existence of those films kind of hurts this film's existence. If they wanted to do the same thing with Thomas' character from The Adventure Begins that they did in those films, then I think that they should have done some retellings of those old stories from the books, so that they could keep Thomas' cheeky persona in tact, and then have the films that they made keep his character as mature as he was here.
am i the only one who ducking loves the climax tone shift because for me i had a lot of situations in my life thats like do or die but at the end i laugh my butt off and think to myself "holy crap that actually happened lmao" or something lie that idk i just think the tone shift is funny
Okay guys, anyone that likes Bill and Ben should know this. Keep it going.
"Ben!"
"Wot?"
"Your making puffing noises in your sleep again!"
Can you do ranking all of the movies
I have a nostalgia for this movie I love everything about it the only thing I hate is Timothy that’s about it

Ok, don't get me wrong, I don't mind tale of the brave, but calling Marion unique is like calling Charlie funny (Which he isn't). I view Marion like Philip: Annoying and not needed. And I'm not joking when I say this, but SLOTLT would've gotten a 10/10 if the pointless Marion scenes weren't there (It's a 9.5/10 because of how memorable it is, plus with everything else in it).
Charlie Is funny. Imo
I don't like this Thomas movie. Why? Because it's freaky. Percy runs away from Sir Topham Hatt and tries to go out of Sodor to the mainland, James was being very troublesome, and there were some very serious arguments. Remember, it's my opinion.
It would have been better to bring back someone like boco instead of introducing too many new characters
