      Forsure! I was skunked for the trip until that 1 stop that produced 3 hookups

    Lol, using low gear will help on the circles up and down. I am glad you still got em. Why buy a 2 speed if you don't use it.😅

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  Před rokem

      I was just under the impression small fish doesn't need to be reeled in in low gear so I never use it. This year I'm hopping on longer trips so maybe I can finally get to use it lol

      @@DerrickVan Haha. Large enough for me. Also, use it like a gear. I engage it when needed bringing them in during the up and down fight, and go back to high speed when that fish makes that crazy run.

    Damn nice stuff man, what was the jig you kept getting bit on?

      Thank you! I was using a makaira 16ii on a custom rail rod, I don't know the blank

    Good job, do you ever try to figure out why the first 2 was popped off?

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  Před rokem +1

      Thank you! I suspect it was a bad hookset and while fighting the fish and pumping it the hook just ripped free

      Makaira 16ii graftech rod and 100lb test

    did you felt undergun with that setup? or were you cofident on it , just bad hook setups

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  Před rokem

      I was confident, I think it just came down to me pumping the rod, I later learned to not pump the rod when you are heavy knife jigging because the hook might backout

    Why do you think the fish kept popping off?

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  Před rokem +1

      I think it was because I was pumping the fish, since the jig was so heavy, pumping it gave the jig some slack to back out of the fish's mouth because it was a 400g jig.

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  Před rokem

      @Outbackamerica I was in high gear I never switched to low gear. Makairas now gear is 1.3:1 and it's high gear is 4:1, which is typically the low gear on a talica

    What did it cost to go fishing on that trip? Cause I'm looking at prices that are astronomical

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  Před rokem +1

      It cost me $395 to get on this trip, I agree with you that the prices are high but when it's biting good it's well worth it when you catch a bluefin. My entertainment budget basically all goes to fishing haha 😄
