Hi! Do you think that dojopro ronin katana is a good election for my first katana or do you think that are better options?

Hello Dear Ronin, thank you for your comment and question, I would say it depends. For which type of practice: tameshigiri/iaido or backyard iaidoka cutting ? Since how long do you practice tameshigiri ? (a Iaito first and proper iaido dojo instruction (internet classroom as minimum) prevent beginners from serious injuries). If you are from US or Europe or another country this brand doesn't have the same value/cost on where you are in my opinion. For US, 300$ for this brand it is acceptable (even I think it is not a good brand as musashi prac YNH first prices). But this is a thick and heavy blade (more difficult to bend) with cheap materials it will endure multiple tries with uncorrect angles of cut. For this budget john lee is better in my opinion for steel quality 1095/balance/money or hanwei but hanwei even have very good balance, I don't appreciate their thick tsuka and 1060 carbon steel for such practical budget. The other choices on the industrial market should be munetoshi and huawei for something that look serious but I didn't try yet these two brands. John Lee has saruka hito for 1m60/1m65 person, the practical/hannya for a 1m70/1m80 person if you are in europe. If you are in us I would take a hanwei (or make your own try with munetoshi or huawei if you find some for your dojo practice) or a 1060 budget hanwei or 1095 hanwei at your size in both case (tozando guide). It says T10 steel it looks legit but it is not a popular sword so Im not sure about its quality I would appreciate your opinion. Ive seen many videos of good quality katanas from fuji forge like crane katana but for this specific one I dont know.

Dear Ronin, thank you for your comment, sometimes it is better to wait and search the best brand size product (for 6-8 months) with a middle class product (800$) than to buy many economical product where there are not proper balance not proper size or not nice quality materials, and after 3-4 disappointing product bought it would be the same than one really enjoyable sword than will preserve elbows integrity and make you progress with correct measurements and sturdiness.

@@RoninHood Yes, Ive thought about this too and most likely thats what Im going to do. Or maybe ill buy one cheap (good value for money) practical and then buy a proper one with proper size point of balance etc.

Dear Ronin, thank you for your comment, I think this is a good way to proceed: a practical from JL or hanwei for beginner cut , and a middle class T10 (hanwei, murasame (didn't try yet) artkatana (did't try yet) dragon king, huawei (didn't try yet) for serious cut.

Hello my friend Ronin Hood!.I've just watched your video and i'm about to buy my first katana sword!.I'm standing between 2 swords, the John Lee Katana(1095 carbon steel) and a Damascus Katana YariNoHanzo Fukushima(Damascus 1060 High Carbon Steel)..I have heard good aspects about the second one and i love its appearance! Now,i'hearing from you that practical John Lee Katana is a very good sword, very easy and practical to use it for cutting..I know that 1095 steel is harder...
Maybe 1060 High Carbon Steel Damascus is a little better than (just) 1060 Carbon Steel!
    What would you say?

Hello dear ronin, thank you for your comment and question,
damascus with only 1060 (folded) is not a real damascus because no add of 1095 so no improvement of the mechanics of damascus : resilience of 1060 (shocks) and hardness of 1095 for the edge.
Like you probably know i m not crazy of balance/weight distribution of yarinohanzo shinken however 1060 is better for starting batto (i truely recommend practicing in dojo for avoiding injuries due to uncorrect form or vigilance) because in case of wrong cut the edge will be less faster damaged or broken (omote/wood stand). However if your form is correct and it is for batto JL prac will be better with balance and steel. You can check on tozando guide size which one is closer to your size (nagasa).

I wish you the best on your martial practice, please find a dojo (iai or battodo (best)) for avoiding any injuries. I will maybe create this year a batto beginner class video pack on teachable (for people who doesn’t find dojo close their home) but live dojo always better.

Good to know, kali escrima is an amazing self defense martial arts system. Maybe you will have to adapt with Japanese sword distances with your teacher. I am from Europe, and you ?
