If you've been watching The Great British Sewing Bee and it's tempted you to try out dressmaking for the first time you are in the right place. When you first start to sew your own clothes choosing the right pattern is essential. We narrowed down the best sewing patterns with beginners in mind. We've got loads of great things for you to make, everything from dresses, tops, skirts, jackets and pyjamas. We've only included sewing patterns that use cotton, as this is the easiest fabric to learn to sew with. We've also made sure to exclude any tricky techniques such as invisible zips.

I love Helen's Closet Patterns for beginners. Her instructions are VERY good and she has lots of cute basics to learn with. I'm glad you made this video. I can refer people to it when they ask me to sew for them. Ha Ha Ha!!!!

I love your vlogs, and look forward to them! You need to check your sound levels, though, there are some disturbance in the force in the last three ones. The information is still very useful, keep going and don't let the technology get you down!

Hello Kate, I've noticed this in the sewing bee video too but it seems that your mic is not as good as it used to be. The sound quality is tinny (metallic?) and the setup before must have been better. Thanks for the great videos otherwise!

It sounds to me like the volume has been pushed too loud in the editing stage. I don't like to be critical, but I'm sure that they'd want to know and improve, as they have such a high standard!

I'm listening on headphones and it is quite bad. It's possible it doesn't come across so bad on speakers? (Just noting in case the editor listens to it on speakers and doesn't notice it because of this!)

Does anyone else have problems with the sound? Last video I also had a hard time with the sound. No problem with other channels but I don't see any comments about it 🤔

I’m very new to sewing and I’m about to dip my toe in the water in regards to having a go at making something for myself. Your video is extremely useful for me. Thank you for your recommendations.

What a fabulous topic, thank you! Choosing achievable patterns is my #1 sticking point, my first few garments were probably too advanced in terms of having too many new techniques, and they took forever! The square neck top and the raglan sleeve dress especially are both interesting *and* achievable and could be flattering with a bigger bust. THANK YOU

Love your blog as always even if it’s been 35 years since I was a beginner sewist, thanks!

Love this vlog! One thing would have been helpful would be to mention fabric type, woven or knits.

Thanks, Kate! Love your videos, and it's a great idea make a separate one with different beginner friendly patterns. I think I only made t-shirts for the first year while I figured out some options. Wish I could have had a video like this back then. Have a lovely weekend!

I have just watches most of you CZcams show and am amazed the only women sew. Have you never seen a man sew there are many of us out there and there are patterns for men that are easy like the business shirt KWIK SEW K3883 then there is the KWIK SEW 4088 T SHIRT SHORTS AND DRESSING GOWN. Please show both genders as it seems a little one sided. And this world is more than one gender. Thank you.

Hi Colin, you are correct both men and woman sew, what I would say is that there is a serious lack of mens beginner patterns out there. The patterns we featured are for absolute beginners, the pjs bottoms are unisex so you could make them 👍🏻
