  • 1/2 Way Hitched - Don't Let This Happen to YOU!!!
    Sharon, one of the Two Tired Teachers explains that when she tried to hitch, everything was lined up, the landing gear was down, but the handle didn't pop. She couldn't move forward or backward.
    Sharon has barely raised the landing gear, backed a bit, and the handle popped just as it's supposed to.
    She realized that it was caused by a maintenance problem. She hadn't greased it as often as she possibly should have. Greasing it seemed to solve the problem for the next time she hitched.

    This is an old YT, but most of the comments are wrong. This is a Pullrite Superglide hitch. It works differently from most hitches. The grease is probably not the problem. The manual says a little light oil. A Teflon disk will not help and may jam the hitch. I think she had the trailer too high. The Pullrite techs call it a high hitch, which can cause lots of problems. The truck must lift the trailer as its backs in to hitch. Best advice is to read the manual.

      It was a great hitch for us.

      I have had a Pullrite Superglide for many years. I have used it on 3 Truck/trailer combos. It has worked very well for us. It’s just different from most hitches. Just have to understand those differences.

    I can't say that I understand what you were talking about because I know nothing about a 5th wheel. However, just as the previous owner of my camper was generous in giving me everything I needed to get me started with camping, he was also very generous with his knowledge and advice. He told me that the ball and the connections for the load leveling hitch needed lubrication. I have heeded his advice and have been diligent about using the hitch grease.

    Your videos are not complicated, and easy to understand. Thank you so much. First time 5th Wheel owners, and we are learning how to hook up and unhook, and your video seems very helpful!

      Hang in there. It took awhile, but we were very comfortable with our fifth wheel by the time we traded.

    Glad you prayed. Loved that it was really a simple solution.

    This exact thing just happened to me today. Eventually got the hitch to lock by replacing chocks like you did. Grease on the top of the hitch is a good idea. Thanks for this video.

      You bet. We make videos like this because if we've had the problem, we figure someone watching will have had the same problem.

    Grease was not the problem

    If you use the teflon disk you don't need any grease on your pin plate. Have been doing my hitching this way for the past 15 years with no issues. Word of warning, with the teflon disk, if you put grease on any of the mating surfaces you ruin the teflon disk. Water is not an issue, if you have a rusting pin plate scrape it off and paint. The teflon disk works.

    Why don't you use a Lube Plate and then you don't have to ever worry about the top of the hitch plate. Just a little white lithium grease sprayed on the jaws and grease the zerk fitting once a year and you're good. A lot easier, avoids this problem and is a whole lot cleaner than the grease that collects dust and debris in the air.

      Thanks for the suggestion.

      This hitch requires a special plate that fits on the kingpin (the reason why it slides) so it wont work with a Lube Plate. Thanks for the suggestion, it would be grate if it would fit this hitch.

    Do you have one of those plastic disks on the trailer part of your hitch? I’m glad you got unstuck. In May, my brother-n-law was kind enough to get my truck free of trailer. I learned a lot from your story. Thanks

      @TwoTiredTeachers  Před 6 lety +1

      I believe it's a metal plate. I'll ask Sharon, and if I'm mistaken, I'll let you know.

      I have a flat plastic disk (1/4") about the size of a frisbee. It sits above the hitch ball. It is sposed to reduce friction between the plates. I think keeping things clean and greased is the way to go.

    You just needed to chalk the tires, all four if necessary back of the tires so the trailer can't move backwards while backing into the hitch, without the chalks the trailer was probably moving backwards with the pickup before it had a chance to lock and forward with the pickup not because it had locked but because you had enough weight on the truck with the up enough of the ground to move

    Good advice. You have your channel name on your truck : ) and is that your logo on the door? Nice!!

    • @TwoTiredTeachers
      @TwoTiredTeachers  Před 6 lety +2

      The name is on the truck, and we have magnetic door signs with the logo. Thanks for noticing.
