We have this hitch. Five years. No problems until recently. Decided to take it apart and lube the hell out of it. Pulling handle is extremely difficult and takes multiple tries. According to Pullrite, we should have been doing this once a year. This video would have been better if you had your camera person go over to the hitch when you were raising the trailer so people could see what it’s supposed to look like. Also, an even better video (as we have problems with this) is to explain how to disconnect if your truck is on a slope but your trailer is not. Your tip about backing into the chocks is very helpful.

"Nick The Hitch Guy" = Rock Star! Great video sir! Nicely done. A deliberate and methodical explanation makes this video easy to understand!

Just bought that hitch in the 2714 model. But I have heard backing up with this hitch is a little different. Never owned a 5th wheel before but have towed quite a bit. Looking for a vid on backing up with this slider hitch and it is very hard to find.

      👋
In all honesty, I can't tell the difference between different types of 5th wheel hitches when I'm backing up. Based on my experience, I would argue that there is no difference. However, the fact is that the point that the trailer and truck pivot when turning does change things a bit. Think 5th wheel vs travel trailer. The difference Between backing a travel trailer vs a 5th wheel is pretty big. This is due to the travel trailer pivoting 40+ inches behind the rear axle of the truck and a 5th wheel right over the rear axle. A Superglide keeps this pivoting point over the axle until the truck and trailer reach a 10 degree angle. At this point the pivot point slowly climbs rearward as that angle is being produced. Therefore, I suppose the difference is that the trailer becomes more responsive of the truck forcing the turn as that turn is made. So, the best advice to handle this is to start correcting your truck back in line with the trailer a little bit sooner when backing. (I'm not sure this entirely makes sense but I think you're right, a great video opportunity!

    Hi Nick
Great information that we all learn with experience or on CZcams.
You should also mention the limitations in regards to the angle of your truck to trailer. This hitch must be within +/- ten degrees due to the plate added to the trailer that prevents the rotation at the plate and allows the Pulright to do its magic.

I’m looking at the super glide but my parking spot is at an angle with the truck lower than the trailer. Will I still be able to un-hitch?

Good hitch, but you better have 3 other guys around if you ever want to take it out of your truck bed.

Thanks for making this video. Every time I use my toy hauler, it is a night mare to unhook. Can't budge the handle. 100 times back and forth in and out of the truck to move it forward or backward but nothing seems to help until I get it just right. I will be trying this the next time I use it for sure.

That technique is great so long as your site is level, especially side-to-side. I have that hitch and I find that leaving my truck in reverse gear without the emer brake on maintains that rearward pressure against the kingpin and thereby easy to pull the jaw handle. However, if you are on un-level ground and you require the truck to be connected to the camper in order to level it side-to-side (ie using leveling blocks under the trailer wheels for those without power levelers), you will have major difficulties getting unhooked. You will have to disconnect the head unit from the carriage of the hitch and then raise the camper enough for the head unit to clear the carriage, then roll the truck away. People with power levelers can level their rigs after disconnecting from the truck.

I back mine into chalks as well but the only difference I do is…I rise mine up until I see a small gap between the pin box and the plate on the slide rite. Is that wrong in your opinion?

  • @jasongarneau6255

So based on the couple of times I have unhitched my pullrite superglide, you can't judge that the 5th wheel is at the right height by looking for a crack of light between the catch plate and the 5th wheel hitch, correct? I haven't been able to see any light or space between the two, regardless of height I raise the landing gear to. BTW, thank you for the video!

    • @nickthehitchguy7648
      @nickthehitchguy7648  Před 2 lety +1

Hi Jason! You are correct, you can not judge that the height is correct by looking for a crack. Unfortunately, many people use this method and are confronted with problems. Basically, if you have lifted the trailer to the point of light coming between the top of the hitch plate and the bottom of the pinbox, you have certainly lifted the trailer too much.

@@nickthehitchguy7648 Hey Jason, what I have done with my last 5th wheel was lift the trailer up until I just see the king pin move a slight amount. With my new 5th wheel that trick no longer works, I think it's because the pinbox is a RotoFlex, so now I just do just as you described in the video and it works very well. The key though is to make sure you have all the pressure from the pin to the head of the hitch. Great vid.

so do you grease the hitch or leave dry? taking my trailer of the hitch has been the hardest thing. i am hoping the new type tire chocks will let me drive on them and release the tension

  • @rodericklang7763

Does the trailer have to be level before unhitching, in this example you look to be on a very level surface. I store my trailer in a covered paved RV storage lot and my fifth wheel sits at a very noticeable ange with the front (kingpin) of the trailer sitting higher than the rear of the trailer. I have been having trouble unhitching at my RV storage lot and am wondering if I need to level the trailer before unhitching ?
